Thanks. I've gotten all Pfizer so far w/o bad side effects and am avoiding Moderna because I know a number of people who had rough experiences. BTW, I had my first shingles shots over the past year (just turned 66), and those (it's 2 installments) really knocked me for a loop.

More on #12: The Message from the Tribe album posted above had three releases. The first version does not contain #12: side A is three tunes from what was released as Wendell Harrison's An Evening with the Devil, and side B is three tunes shared with later releases of Message from the Tribe. The two subsequent versions of Message from the Tribe added five more tunes. The third version consisted of remixes of the second version. I don't know if the three tunes shared by the first 2 versions used the same mixes. Harrison's An Evening with the Devil was the first Tribe album I acquired, so I purchased "version 2" of Message from the Tribe (cover pictured upthread) to avoid duplication and get more music. I'm not compulsive enough to have picked up versions 1 or 3.

I'll listen to non-vocal selections if free online, but decline to commit funds. 😁

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
T.D. replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
I only skimmed through the Musicweb review at warp speed, but got the impression that the sole obvious candidate for said material is disc 54 (scroll way down. quoted below). But there is also material that has only been released in Japan or on obscure releases. The final disc in the box, CD54, is of previously unreleased recordings. The Schubert “Unfinished” from Danish Radio – recorded on 1st October 1950 during the WPO’s European tour – has been known about for many years. Furtwängler is also known to have performed this symphony on the same date in 1949 when the orchestra visited the United Kingdom – and comes from a BBC studio recording. It may be nice to know if this also exists, not least because Furtwängler had a very special way with this Schubert symphony. Although his tempi were not especially slow, the weight and nobility he brought to the “Unfinished” were of unusual power. And it is simply profound and overwhelming in this performance because the sound is so spectacular. The sheer weight given to the strings, the resonance, and the very natural surround sound makes this an epic “Unfinished”. It comes close to being the finest thing in this box, certainly sound wise. The play-through of the Götterdämmerung Siegfried Funeral March from January 1950 – already published on Testament – offers nothing remarkably new, although the sound is impressively wide-ranging. The Vienna/EMI takes from February 1949 would have been a more enticing prospect. The Elegia from Tchaikovsky’s Serenade in C major is beautifully done, and interesting given that this is one of the very few Tchaikovsky pieces that Furtwängler played beside the last three symphonies. The WPO’s playing is remarkably beautifully and the sound is exquisite. It is not listed as stereo but it has almost all the attributes of an early stereo recording. -

This might help: https://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2021/Dec/Furtwangler-Warner-9029523240.htm Seems there are many DG recordings (particularly live performances) from a prior box that are not in this set. If you care about what David Hurwitz had to say (I don't): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFyGzuiG0bQ -

Finally! Track 8, a Wendell Harrison composition Beneficent from this album: I got the Japanese CD reissue with this cover because I consider its art the most badass of the 3 versions. The music is pretty damn good too!

The exact track for #12 is escaping me. I know it's Tribe! Could have sworn it was Wendell Harrison Farewell to the Welfare, but it doesn't match the couple of versions I have in the collection. A lot of the Tribe repertory was released in various remixes...maybe this is a remix I don't have. 🧐

Is that new Pharoah really a needle-drop? On the dedicated thread I saw "remastered" a couple of times, plus assertions that artists retained India Navigation masters. But I haven't paid a lot of attention. I'm going for that release regardless. Got rid of the turntable long ago, so if needle-drop is the only option...
-
I have the Dusty Groove CD reissue. Nothing in the package says whether or not it's a needle-drop. The only notes are reproductions of the original liner notes. The only credits on the (new) tray card graphics are the musicians, no sound man or engineer. So I suspect a needle-drop. I haven't listened for a while, will play it tonight and evaluate sound. Sounds very good to me (no audiophile, though I listen on a decent system). If a needle-drop, they did a great job with it.

Japanese Jazz
T.D. replied to Head Man's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Thanks. I haven't been able to track this one down, but it's on the list. Does CM play any unusual instruments on this recording? My original post may have been a little misleading: I like the nagaswaram on the other 2 albums. -

Definitely this one (CM only listed on as, but see cover image): Although similarly not credited, I get the impression at least tracks 1 and 4 on this album also have nagaswaram (ditto on the cover photo). It's a fine album at any rate, with essentially the same personnel except for Togashi(!) on drums. -

If you want straight-ahead, perhaps exercise a degree of caution with the Watanabe/Mariano albums. I have a couple on which Charlie Mariano goes into his Indian bag and plays some nagaswaram. Not unpleasant, but perhaps not what the OP had in mind. The bossa titles should be safe. -
I dunno. Business-wise, I have a suspicion that Concord overpaid for all those old catalogs and views the vinyl resurgence (bubble? 😉) as a chance to recoup some of their losses. Can't blame 'em in that respect. I have no interest in Craft and wish Concord would do something more appealing with their portfolio, but...truth is that I long ago wrote off Concord, figuring that'd never happen.

Extremely cool, thanks for posting this. Have always liked Todd's music. Saw some recent interviews, personality-wise he seems to be somewhat of a Richard (so to speak), but oh well. Used to hear a lot of Johnny Mathis in Chicago area c. late '60s - early '80s.

#12 feels like a Detroit Tribe thing, very much in my personal wheelhouse. Thinking Wendell Harrison or Phil Ranelin. At work, will have to check the collection when I get home.
-
Damn, I know I not only have #12's album in my collection, but have listened fairly recently...ID is escaping me.
-
Damn. And I thought I was doing well. 🤣 Shouldn't have started just after waking up. It is kinda natural to go for the top item in the list.😶 #3's gotta be Jackie / Blue Note / 60s. I know I have the album, but am not at home to look up the track. OK, this one.

Me too. I may preorder through importcds this weekend. Amazon only shows LPs, DG is taking preorders at higher price. [Added] I didn't make it clear above that the box is 6 studio albums.

The Oblivion Express (studio albums) box (6-LP or 6-CD) is coming out in October (20th or so). https://www.facebook.com/soulbankmusic

Another low-priced Japanese reissue, 3 Tete Montoliu Timeless releases, Man From Barcelona/Secret Love/Yellow Dolphin Street (3CD set) Recently picked up 4 of these releases, 3 of which (including this one) to explore musicians I'd heard little from.

Not that long ago, Leo Records was advertising some kind of liquidation / going out of business sale. There's a thread on the forum somewhere. So I'm puzzled. It shows on discogs as a 2023 release, but no offerings. I'd expect offerings pretty soon. Squidco is sometimes a good source, but I drew a complete blank there and their search engine doesn't even recognize Amina Claudine Myers as a possible leader.
-
Thanks, I really enjoyed the music (with some qualms about #2) but didn't have anything to add to the main thread. Following the "forum visitor" hint, my guess for #5 was Frank Kimbrough, but I couldn't come up with an album/track. Have to explore the Solal! Also a fan of Deuchar. Jarrett was obvious but I didn't have a track. I have the Yamamoto/Yamashita/Togashi "Breath" and it's very good. But I slightly prefer "Ginkai" or "Silver World" (both titles sometimes used) for a quartet recording with Kikuchi/Peacock/Murakami. Youtube here I really should have gotten the Yamamoto/Berger and (especially) Schneiderman. Excuse is that I've never heard those particular recordings. Weirdly, I ran down a mental list of NY-based boppish pianists who might have appeared on #13, but inexplicably spaced Schneiderman and consequently drew a blank. 🙄
