  1. All the art and documentation, apart from a few words, are in Japanese so I can't say a lot of substance. I can piece together the constituent albums (covers are given in the booklet), but can't go anywhere on track titles without a whole lot more work. Disc 1 is all jazz, I only have one tune (#8) on previously acquired recording, it's a nice compilation with a bunch of styles: some straight-ahead (one vocal), some fusion, some free. The apparent cult favorite Aya's Samba album is represented, not sure if it's the title tune (see above). Based on a couple of listens, the disc is rather good. Disc 2 was a complete shot in the dark. Mostly pop or rock of some type, lots of vocals, one mainly electronic selection, one electric blues. Definitely interesting, I like it more than expected. Fortunately no discernible techno/disco/boy band material. Overall a pretty cool set. I'm happy with the purchase, spent $20 + (domestic US) shipping and don't begrudge the money. I'd say that disc 2 and the compilation nature of disc 1 (8 tunes by different groups, which I find a bit tough to wrap my head around) limit the amount one would pay for it. If you can find it on a streaming site*, definitely take a listen! *Some pretty obscure Japanese titles on the "Aketa's Disk" label seem to be on Apple Music; I dunno about "Johnny's Disk", but maybe...
  2. Many good titles above, but the New York '60s haven't been that heavily represented. [I mentally group Ra's albums into "decade" bins, which is convenient and not wildly inaccurate.] From that era I'd consider: The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra The Magic City Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy / Art Forms of Directions Tomorrow. [Added] I really enjoy Sleeping Beauty ('70s), and A Fireside Chat with Lucifer ('80s) is badass.
  3. Yowzah. But in hindsight, that could have been the apex of Anna Rawson's golf career...2010 was the last of her 3 seasons on the LPGA tour, and that season was practically over by the time the "Fall 2010" issue hit the streets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Rawson [Courtesy of Google. 😉 I don't follow golf, but the name rang no bells so I just had to inquire.]
  4. Yes. Twice relating to Rollins: Birdland appearances and subsequent dropping of piano / returning to pianoless trio (Feb 1958) and a big band (incl. piano) recording date (July 1958). Plus one unrelated mention of his co-founding Milestone Records.
  5. RIP. Noticing that an upcoming concert program including Karl Berger (in Kingston, NY) was recently cancelled "for health reasons" and replaced with another, I immediately feared something like this. I know Ingrid (though not on a first-name basis) via non-musical activities but never met Karl.

    Soft spots

I really like pianist Rob Schneiderman, who recorded a lot on Reservoir. Also Pete Malinverni, ditto (who I once saw live).
  7. That would be a nice package, but I can't imagine Mosaic going for it. Far too avant-garde a roster.
  8. Gardiner's SMP, as well as Parsifal (Kna '62) will also get airplay this weekend.
  9. Roll of the dice, used copy at OK price: Have been getting into Japanese jazz, expect to enjoy Disc 1 "Jazz Ground". No idea what's in store with Disc 2 "Under Ground", anything is possible, weirdness is OK but I hope it doesn't turn out to be horrible. 🤞 🤣
  10. Thanks, this is (welcome) news to me, will be ordering.
  11. I thought the '70s and '80s really filled a hole, as the '50s and '60s have widely chronicled. Like Rabshakeh, I'd rather see the '90s, which I know far less about, next. Needless to say, grateful to Scott and Dan for their effort whatever (even if nothing) comes next.
  12. I'm on their e-mail list. Got a message touting the AEC this morning. Agreed, fine lineup. BOAC has really evolved over the years to include much more jazz / improvised music. Curious about the Triadic Memories performance...Conrad Tao is an excellent pianist, but I didn't know Tyshawn Sorey had the piece in his repertoire.
  13. I was a pretty early order, no notice of any kind yet. The website says "SOLD OUT". Dusty Groove shows estimated availability 4/15 FWIW.
  14. Been listening to recordings from my order posted above. Clay by the Yamashita Trio (w. Sakata, Moriyama) is really strong. I enjoy it even more than the Montreux and Hot Menu recordings (w. Koyama on drums instead of Moriyama) mentioned upthread. It's extremely free if that matters. [Added] Recently received a bunch of recordings. Right now, will just say that A Figure of Yosuke Yamashita Vol. 1 & 2 has caused me to revise expectations of Rhapsody in Blue upwards. I'd previously heard only three free trio sessions with Akira Sakata. Yamashita's playing on Vol. 1 (quartet) suggests that he should be able to play "classical" proficiently; Vol. 2 (large ensembles incl. strings, with Sakata vocals on one piece) sounds akin to contemporary classical compositions in places. So Rhapsody in Blue might be interesting indeed, but it's still not high on my priority list (too much music, too little time).
  15. I also enjoy her (classically trained?) singing here, and the album is a Strata-East favorite. Like some others, I prefer this version of John Coltrane to Clifford Jordan's (which is also good).
  16. Have to agree with you on the classical material. Interesting in some sense, but the warhorse pieces have been recorded by so many legends that Yamashita would be doing great if his interpretations merely wound up "in the pack". Mildly curious about his own composition (piano quintet?) but with all due respect I doubt it could be a standout. That "Satoh-Takahashi duo on Columbia" is attractive! I noticed a CD release on "Bridge" and crossed my fingers it was David Starobin's label 🤣,but of course no dice. The Denon reissue is not uber-scarce (Academy warehouse has it), but I gave up vinyl long ago so probably SOL on that one.
  17. Agreed on Benedetti / Parker, but isn't that one of the sets that took the longest to sell out? Admission: I don't own it. Seriously considered purchase for years and years, but held off because I figured the sound quality would deter me from listening very often.
  18. Discs 13-15 (DSCH, B. Tchaikovsky / Mosolov, Bortkiewicz) Cheapo, but I enjoy the set. The Shostakovich disc (Boris Giltburg soloist), surprisingly, is outstanding. I like the other 3 off-the-beaten-track composers.
