TTK Returns from Vacation with BONGOS!
T.D. replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Musician's Forum
As an ex-science nerd, I'm partial to Richard Feynman. -
This was on my watch list at Dusty Groove and I got an in-stock notice today. [Edited] Ordered and shipped, seems to have sold out. LP of one of the sessions still available.

Mostly unusual stuff and shots in the dark, but they weren't expensive... (an early Mike Nock recording)
-
Whoa. Thanks, I didn't know of that one!
-
I just included this in a DG order (since they had it and I liked samples):

R.I.P. I was given a cassette of one of his solo albums (it might have been Autumn, but I forget) back around 1990. I enjoyed it and frequently played it in the car (until the cassette failed).
-
Bought this from DG (they did the CD reissue) and it's a really neat album. Mostly straight-ahead, with PL and British musicians incl. David Snell (harp) and Stan Tracey.
-
I don't have any recordings with him as leader, thanks for the ideas. Only know his work through some of the early Yosuke Yamashita Trio releases, which are of course very good.

Agreed those two solo piano albums are exceptional, they've overall made the biggest impact on me. But there's not a bad one in the lot, and on this present traversal of the box I'm particularly digging Milano Strut with Don Moye (and Pullen playing some organ).

The release showed up a couple of days ago on Dusty Groove's "Jazz: Coming Soon" page [so DG will likely get a number of vinyl copies], and I just had to click on such a title. 😉 Agreed that it's a punt, but looks well "worth a flutter"...That said, I don't buy vinyl and will wait to audition some tracks on bandcamp. In the meantime, I had fun listening to this German punk release (and its twin) on bandcamp:

This is unusual but interesting. https://blacktruffle.bandcamp.com/album/schei-e-71 Download and vinyl only. I haven't been able to find any clips to listen to. Excerpt from blurb: Following on from the Bergisch-Brandenburgisches Quartett’s anarchic Live ’82 (BT095), Black Truffle continues its deep dive into the archives of legendary drummer/accordionist/photographer/composer/conceptual prankster Sven-Åke Johansson with Scheisse ’71. Recorded in November 1971 during the Berliner Jazztage at a heavy-hitting concert that also included the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and groups led by Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, and Masahiko Sato, Scheisse ’71 is the only document of a wild, otherwise unrecorded quintet featuring Johansson on drums, accordion and oboe d’amore, legendary free jazz vocalist Jeanne Lee, her husband Gunter Hampel on vibes, flute and bass clarinet, live electronics pioneer Michael Waisvisz on modified Putney (VCS 3) synthesizer, and the unknown Freddy Gosseye on electric bass. Part of a festival centred on giants of jazz like Duke Ellignton and Dizzy Gillespie, the radical performance shocked its audience, who can be heard heckling and yelling abuse at points, including the titular exclamation of ‘Scheiße!’

An excellent set I very much enjoy, but inexplicably have not listened to in years. Finally pulled it off the shelf.

Clifford Jordan - Drink Plenty Water (unissued 1974 Strata East session)
T.D. replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
I'm digging this. Not 100% into the vocals (though I do have a weakness for spoken word pieces), but that's the only slight demerit. Jordan's playing is great, and I really like the instrumentation (e.g. cello, 2 basses, bass clarinet, Stanley Cowell,...) and arrangements by Bill Lee. Considering how much I enjoy Lee's (via Descendants of Mike and Phoebe) A Spirit Speaks, this is a must-buy. -

I've bought several Mapleshade CDs over the years. All but Walter Davis Jr.'s In Walked Thelonious (which I recommend) were forgettable, but none of the forgettable titles appear on the website. Current Mapleshade inventory on the website includes some pretty interesting titles (Raphe Malik for one), looks like a 3-CD order could easily be cobbled together to qualify for the 30% off. -
I suppose one could do an A/B comparison: Release an album on Bandcamp + streaming sites and another solely on Bandcamp, and then compare the revenues to artist. But the results could be confounded with "quality of the album", whether it got reviewed by major media sites, etc. So a larger statistical study would be required. Mind you, I don't believe this is actually happening. 😄

The musical / performance merit of that latest recording was the subject of a minor brouhaha on this forum, but I didn't participate and am too lazy to search for it. Interesting decision about bandcamp. Even I've been able to detect a trend away from physical CD releases, so skipping that is no surprise...😄 Passing on the streaming sites is an interesting call. I'm not a musician and don't know about the economics of streaming, but streaming per se doesn't appear very profitable for artists. Perhaps it becomes more attractive if you accept the argument that streaming exposure can result in purchase of downloads (or even physical recordings)?

RIP, big respect. A Spirit Speaks by The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe is a brilliant album IMO. Personal favorite.

Thanks for clearing that up. Puzzled the heck out of me...Jim seemingly replying to his own post using Larry's language. 🤔

Truth be told, I bought the 2-CD Mike Osborne Cadillac release on a whim...it seemed too good to pass up given I was already putting together an order from DG. I really enjoy his playing, have just 2 discs with him as leader (one on Turtle* and one on Ogun), but several as sideman (mostly with Chris McGregor and Mike Westbrook). *in this excellent and inexpensive set
