Anyone Else Follow Formula 1 Racing?
T.D. replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Richly deserved IMO. And a lot of it's dirty kleptocrat money he acquired by making F1 one of the world headquarters of sportswashing (granted the IOC, FIFA, etc. are right up there). -
You can get around it by erasing your whole browser cache, including cookies, but that can be inconvenient. I use a "burner" browser (Edge) that I open only to access sites with limited stories/month access; I erase the Edge cache frequently. I was able to read the story that way (in Chrome I'm paywalled).

Anyone Else Follow Formula 1 Racing?

1. I believe so. 2. Some motorsport enthusiasts follow both F1 and Nascar. I never followed Nascar, so can't directly compare the demographics. I get the feeling the F1 fan base is rather more cosmopolitan, for want of a better word. -

When I was a kid, the 1966 film Grand Prix w. James Garner was huge. I was heavily into F1 in the late '90s and very early oughts, used to drive up to the Montreal GP every year. Enjoyed the races, and Montreal is a nice place to visit. The bewildering annual technical rule changes gradually turned me off. Plus, there aren't many competitive teams; the same few win all the races every year. Not to bring politics into it (mods delete if desired), but a couple more turn-offs for me: 1) Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley, who ran F1 like a fiefdom when I was heavily interested, turned out to be seriously sleazy characters. 2) As far as I can tell, F1 is the world headquarters of "sportswashing". Just run through all the exotic and far-away race venues. -
Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
T.D. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Passing on Hubbard. Will definitely purchase the Bill Barron in the (exceedingly unlikely ) event it's released. -
Ogun reissue w. Oh! for the Edge

A very reasonable speculation, I didn't mean to badmouth it. I've been searching for documentation, but AFAIK that hasn't yet appeared (at least in "widely available sources"). I read Sites's excellent book Sun Ra in Chicago, but only via interlibrary loan checkout, don't own it. Don't recall any detailed Andrew Hill info there, but haven't been able to check the index. Whoa...big discovery!...I was able to find via Google Books, from p. 81 of Sites [bold added]: "Pianist Andrew Hill, who came of age in this scene and played with Blount, later called it 'a time before the music got separated'..." That seems to be the only significant Hill reference in Sites, however.
-
Agreed on Ra-ish sounding. I think Jim speculated about talk/collaboration. I was sufficiently interested to pull out my copy of Szwed's bio and go through the Hill references in the index. But all I found was one mention of Andrew Hill being among "younger musicians [who] were often in Sonny's audiences now [c. 1959]".

One more thing: don't go hand-fishing for catfish in a remote area with a drug-addled psychotic. Proved far more hazardous than the fish.

I'm old and white but I ain't fat. Haven't yet seen any Uniqlo jazz t-shirts in the flesh, but would probably accost any wearer I encounter, regardless of age.

Thanks for the tech info (snipped). Braxton has been releasing a significant amount of physical material, music and video, on Blu-Ray discs. For instance this one, which is iirc 4 to 5 CDs equivalent on 1 Blu-Ray disc.
-
I have some classical CDs, all in box set reissues, that run slightly over 80 minutes. Never before heard of one as long as 83 min. My player gets sketchy on super-long CDs and sometimes has trouble reading them.

RIP. Sad, I was aware of her struggle with Parkinson's.

Thanks, very helpful. The 1201 Music website shows a lot of interesting DL releases with sketchy (or no) discographical information: https://1201music.com/black-lion-jazz-greats-24-bit-remastered/
-
That [emphasis added] would be awesome! I'd happily pay up for those shirts.

There's a really vague Allmusic page: https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-search-mw0002497467 The image there shows "Recorded early 1970s" and "Black Lion Vault Remastered". Also shows on Allmusic's Waldron discography under Compilations, as a 2012 release on 1201 Music (Black Lion reissue label iirc). https://www.allmusic.com/artist/mal-waldron-mn0000665824/discography/compilations

I decided to pass on the Etsy seller. I was looking at some complex designs, in particular RRK The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color. But a recent 4-star review (which I consider lukewarm since Internet reviews seem biased to 5-star) was for that exact cover, said that the T-shirt was fine but the design "low resolution".

I shudder whenever Jersey City shows up in USPS tracking. All of my weird USPS routes and long delays have featured that hub. Nothing to date has actually been lost, though. FWIW. Vendor Tommy's Jazz? I recall he's in the Southern Catskills, Sullivan Co. Agreed not his fault.

To be fair, I fished out the most recent printed 100% cotton T-shirt I acquired (OK, was comped) a few years ago. Can't make out the thread weight, but looking up the mfr. (Next Level), I figure it's 4.3 oz., close to the Etsy seller's (though I don't know the brand they use). It's pretty decent: nice soft fabric, definitely on the light side but cooler for hot weather wear. Won't last nearly as long as Beefy-T blanks, but by no means crapola.
-
According to the Etsy listing page: 100% combed ring-spun cotton (which is a plus), 4.2 oz (which is a minus - "standard" weight is 4.5-5.3oz) See also https://kalamazoospiritshoppe.com/fast-guide-common-t-shirt-fabric-differences/ For reference, "Hanes Beefy-T", which I've always considered the gold standard of printed T-shirts, seems to be approx. 6.1 oz combed ring-spun cotton. So fabric weight seems lighter than preferred. Can't speak to the logo, but that looks risky for the designs I like (posted above). More reasons to hold off for now. IMO, at around $24 per shirt they oughta use Hanes Beefy-T blanks.
-
Holy crap! They have RRK The 3-sided dream in audio color and KD Matador!!! But I don't really need T-shirts and am too effin' cheap to pay $23.98 a pop...

I use the discogs site to research album art credits, though I don't trust them 100%. Hermansader is credited for design of (at least one release) of Volumes 1, 2 and 3: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1915387-John-Hermansader?page=1 and has many Blue Note credits. George Wright has only four Blue Note credits according to discogs (and the Freddie Roach seems questionable): https://www.discogs.com/artist/2421433-George-Wright-7

As far as I can tell by zooming on images of the "bird" cover, Design by Reid Miles, Drawing by George Wright. But it's hard to make out and I could be wrong. George Wright is credited for Painting on the bird cover of Vol. 2: https://www.discogs.com/release/3378729-Art-Blakey-Quintet-A-Night-At-Birdland-Volume-2
