Anybody here taking the LSAT this year?
relyles replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It sounds like every John Garfield movie I've ever seen. Perhaps, but I know law students and attorneys who are in that very position. They do exist. I think that when I first started practicing, many of my extended family members looked at me exactly that way. I was basically part of the first generation in my family where attending college was expected and in deed many of us did go to college and graduate. So far I am still the only person in my family (which is primarily concentrated in Birmingham, AL, NYC, Dayton, OH, and Detroit) to pursue a legal career or any type of advanced professional degree. -
Anybody here taking the LSAT this year?

I took the LSAT around 1990. I did take a prep course before hand and do think it was somewhat helpful with at least getting me familiar with what to expect on the exam and successful strategies to use. There is nothing substantive to study for the LSAT, but one definately needs to sharpen analytical thinking. -
Is the recording session in September, or will there be a release in September? Any additional info? I did not see anything at either site.

This actually answers a follow up question I thought about asking. I interpret the above to mean that you respect her flute playing and may be willing to hear her in other settings such as in Frequency with Edward Wilkerson Jr. or as a sideperson, but her conception for her own music, i.e. the Black Earth Ensemble, does not entirely move you? For what it is worth I do enjoy her music, but I can see where you can find her music to be "travelogue-ish" to use your original term.

I own two of the hat releases, which I have enjoyed, but every time I have listened to them I feel like I am missing something. It was reading raves on one of the bulletin boards a couple of years ago about New Dance!, that prompted me to check him out. Although I enjoyed it, on first listen I did not get what was supposed to be particularly significant about the recording. Around the same time I also heard a broadcast of a live performance with some French musicians that I had a fairly similar reaction to. By coincidence I recently pulled out New Dance! again for a more attentive listen as well as Scattered Clouds. No significant revision of my initial assessment, but I do think he is an interesting talent.

I just listened to a Braff-Oester-Rohrer broadcast from Basel that ubu seeded on dimeadozen a while ago. Even on a casual listen in the office this was a very enjoyable performance. I am going to have to chcek out some more of this group.

Your recommendations have proven reliable for me in the past and when I discovered that I was able to legally download the entire Atavistic disc from Rhapsody for only $.89 (it is all one track), I could not pass. Gave it an initial listen yesterday and it was a very favorable first impression. I ordered the Stund CD 9.9.99 and hope to receive it within the next couple of days. I may also order the hatOLOGY release. Anything in particular you would recommend?

I have somewhat of an interest in the Dutch jazz scene and have heard some stuff from both. Bram with Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher and Janssen with the Sound Lee! quartet. I enjoyed both, but the Tristano/Konitz influenced group is really interesting playing.

Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton Together, then Ornette

The first torrent was the BBC broadcast. Somone subsequently uploaded an audience recording of the entire performance. -
I received all of the discs from my two orders yesterday and today.

Interesting opinion and I don't necessarily disagree, but often it seems to many many artists plan on the encore regardless of whether the audience is enthusiastically requesting one. You can usually tell when they get up leave the stage, but basically kind of linger close by and then come back on two minutes later and start another tune without any of that "what should we play" conversation amongst themselve. I get the sense there are some artists at there that would get hurt feelings if the audience does not request the. For me, they are not necessary at all. -
Thanks for the recommendations thus far. I realized tonight that a few of the recordings are available on Rhapsody, which I subscribe to. Therefore, I will be able to audition some of them before making purchasing decisions.

Jazz and the Black Audience
relyles replied to garthsj's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Based on the Benny Powell concert I attended last night in Hartford's Bushnell Park, I would say that there is an audience, but like the rest of the jazz audience it may be ageing. Other than those that choose to actually play the music, I don't think the music is appealing to younger people overall, including the black community. I think another consideration is the style of jazz being played. A couple of weeks ago I attended the Vision Festival in NYC. For whatever reason the more avant garde music does seem to appeal to a younger audience as well as old heads, but I have personally observed less black non-musicians in the audience at these performances. I don't know the reasons for all this, but I would say at least when it comes to a younger audience, it was not much different in the late eightees when I was first starting to listen to the music I attended a lot of concerts and I often was one of the younger people in the audience and also one of few, if any blacks. -
I realized that I shamefully have no Barry Harris recordings as a leader in my collection. What is the collective wisdom on his best recordings to start with?

Transformers, with a real live dinobot!

I saw it and found it entertaining as apparently did most of the crowded theater that to my surprise started clapping at the end of the movie. -

It would be great it they started a festival in Hartford in Honor of McLean. -
Later I also ordered Myra Melford & Han Bennink - Eleven Ghosts. It is not included in the sale, but i believe Alan Lawrence only has a couple of copies left and then it will be OOP.
-
I ordered the following: Marc Copland / David Liebman - Lunar Ellery Eskelin -The Secret Museum Ellery Eskelin - Forms Jimmy Giuffre - Emphasis & Flight 1961 Richard Grossman - Even Your Ears Franz Koglmann - We Thought About Duke Mat Maneri - So What? Misha Mengelberg - The Root of the Problem

I have already received the email below regarding my initial order:

It is a difficult sale to pass on. The production quality on most hat releases alone makes me take a look. Add to that the fact that there are a lot of very creative musicians on the label and prices are typically much higher, this is a very good sale. Over the weekend I ordered two titles and all day I have been contemplating ordering a bunch more.

I recently listened to the Paris disc quite a bit for a review I wrote for Jazz Improv. IMO, it is nearly a must have for Mingus fans.

I picked this one up recently based on the recommendation of this thread. I listened to it quite a bit in the past week and have been enjoying it very much. Thanks for the recommendation.
