  1. You beat me to it Jim. That's the way you do it.
  2. I received this photo a few days ago. He's foreman on the new Lott house in Biloxi. Trent decided it would be better to go with brick.
  3. All true....including those legs! I was just comparing the bizarre discrepancy in sales of two artists on two major labels: One artist who, at the time, had crossed over into three or four markets and the other a jazz veteran with legendary status. Krall, the phenomenon, is probably not a good example. Still, many independents think that chart position means sales. It makes sense but it usually doesn't work that way.
  4. One of the frustrating aspects of good chart position and airplay numbers is that, they don't necessarily equal CD sales. A couple of years ago Diana Krall's Live In Paris held the #1 spot in jazz radio airplay. That week, she had just surpassed 300,000 units sold. Gary Burton was sitting at #2 or 3 and his sales that week were 300. It's a loony tunes business. That said, organissimo is doing extremely well nationally - which is great. I just hope the trend reverses for This Is The Place!
  5. The Denver Post says the gunman is still at large. Cohn, naturally, was very shaken.
  6. Ah go ahead and use him. It's easy.
  7. Congratulations Jim, Joe and Randy. You guys definitely bumped it up four or five notches. Sweet playing all around. A homerun. Certainly a fitting introduction to a national jazz radio audience and the JazzWeek chart. I predict mucho airplay and deservedly so. Spin-o-missimo!
  8. The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau was my intro, too. Recorded at Shelly's Manne Hole, if I remember correctly. Damn he was good. One of a kind. I heard a year or two ago that he was found dead in a swimming pool where he lived ('84?) - originally thought to be a drowning, it came out that he was murdered. Still unresolved as far as I know. Man, what a waste.
  9. Thank you for the picture, Beri. A great looking Mom. Hope you and you're family are doing well.

    Vibe Zone

Great CD This is very special. Mark Sherman is another up and coming vibist. New York.
  11. Some might call it an insult and it very well may be. It's more baiting - that's what it is.
  12. It ain't the first time. Probably won't be the last.
  13. Yep. I think it will sell very well indeed.
  14. Very sorry to hear the news. Hang in there.
  15. An opportunity wasted is a good way to put it. If I was forced to pick, I'd say Sting's redo of Sister Moon works the best. Annie Lennox is respectable. Paul Simon sounds old and tired and off key. The Carlos and Angelique track is all over the place. Personally, I'm tired of John Mayer's schtick even though I know he's a real talent. Hell, there's "talent" all over this album. Couldn't connect with the rest. I think Herbie's eye on the cash register was more focused than his creative intent. Could be wrong.
  16. I've heard that Aguilera track, Leon Russell's A Song For You, and as Jim pointed out, she has pipes. I always knew that. But I would have hoped that she would leave the (now generic) vocal gymnastics of turning three syllable words into twelve - and hitting 20 notes instead of one at home for a date with Herbie Hancock. Well, she didn't and the result is messy. Herbie says he was blown away. It's pyrotechnics. Here is the track list for "Possibilities": "Stitched Up" featuring John Mayer "Safiatou" featuring Carlos Santana and Angelique Kidjo "A Song for You" featuring Christina Aguilera "I Do It for Your Love" featuring Paul Simon "Hush, Hush, Hush" featuring Annie Lennox "Sister Moon" featuring Sting "When Loves Comes to Town" featuring Joss Stone and Jonny Lang "Don't Explain" featuring Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan "Gelo No Montana" featuring Trey Anastasio "I Just Called To Say I Loved You" featuring Raul Midon
  17. Just last week I was listening to Jimmy Witherspoon at a live date in which he invited Baldry to the stage and they sang Times Getting Tougher Than Tough together. Two greats that will be missed.

    Charlie Hunter

I agree. Oddly enough, I've heard people compare Charlie to Stanley Jordan which I completely reject. Jordan, to me, is gimmickry. In some respects, I don't even consider him a guitar player. What he can do is dazzling and all of that but in terms of being a musician, he's not in Hunter's league....imho.

    Charlie Hunter

Right you are Jim. Duo is fine. This one is too, imho - featuring Dave Ellis on tenor...far and away one of the most underrated sax players in the country.

Clint, You should pick up Curtis's latest I Think It's Going To Rain Today on Concord. A bunch of Palmetto cats, cool song selection.
