  1. It took me a while to really appreciate Mulgrew. Larry's description of him as a DEEP subtle player is exactly how I have come to view him. It is a shame that most of his recordings are out of print. A proper reissue of his Landmark and Novus recordings is more than warranted.
  2. I like it too. Love the rhythm section and Mobley. I recall that there was a thread about that set.
  3. Thanks Allen. Will you be releasing the music from the concert on cd for purchase in the future?
  4. I attended the first installment of the month long AACM 50th Anniversary Celebration Festival in New York. It was held at the Community Church of New York, which is a really nice venue with good acoustics. The event was professionally video recorded. It began with a panel discussion with Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams, Thurman Barker, Iqua Colson, Roscoe Mitchell, Amina Claudine Myers, Reggie Nicholson, and Henry Threadgill. Each panelist spoke about the importance of the AACM to him or her. It was interesting to hear the positive impact that the AACM had on each artist's life. It ended with a duo concert with Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell. I had never seen either one live; they were both superb. What was really impressive is that Abrams is 85 and Mitchell is 75, but they are each playing with so much "fire" and creativity.
  5. Always great to catch some of this. Hopefully, the music will be allowed to speak for itself today.
  6. I ordered this yesterday before seeing this post. Will be here tomorrow and can't wait. Purchased because I got a new job with a heavy commute There are ups and downs, but it is a very interesting listen. One of my favorites so far this year.
  7. Mike Reed has a new release called A New Kind of Dance that will be available this month and will also be on a record with Nicole Mitchell and Tomeka Reid called Artifacts, which is an AACM tribute. I listened to some of the samples of both records on Soundcloud and liked what I heard. I see that he has released several recordings on 482 Records, including a duo record with Roscoe Mitchell. Any thoughts on the merits of the records? I have not been able to find a lot of discussion about them on the board.
  8. Newk's time.
  9. There are dozens of Woody Shaw recordings posted on Daily Motion.
  10. I check the board at all hours and have rarely experienced any slowness to open or crashes with respect to any thread. Does anyone in the U.S. experience those issues?
  11. I have tried Harry's also after going into a drug store buy Mach3s and finding them locked up in a case like gold bullion. It took about 20 minutes to find a store clerk willing to come out to unlock the case. After that experience, I decided to try an online service. My issue with Harry's is that the blades do not shave as close as Mach3 blades. They are not bad blades, and for some the closeness might not be an issue. I shave every weekday, but have had no issue with how long the blades last and have not had an issue with rusting blades. If the blades shaved as close as Mach3s, I would probably use Harry's exclusively. I went back to the drug store this week to purchase a pack of Mach3 blades and noticed that they were no longer kept locked up behind a case. They are now in individual plastic boxes that can be unlocked by the cashier. Also, if you go on Amazon, and type Mach3 into the search bar, you will see that Amazon has a "subscription" service for Mach3 blades. I have reduced my use of Amazon due to my issues with its business practices, but it's worth looking into.
  12. I've rarely experienced the "listening to" threads opening slowly or crashing. Does the fact that you are not in the U.S. have something to do with the problems that you are experiencing?
  13. It's not in English, but he does: Darius Jones
  14. Princeton Record Exchange.
  15. Black critics, largely, are completely uninterested in jazz. You will not hear a lot of hoopla concerning Kamasi in most black cultural circles; he's a complete non-factor to most black people culturally. Black people have largely abandoned jazz and it is, sadly, almost a completely ignored by them. Jazz and its traditions are dying in the black community. Most of the people who could make cogent arguments concerning the political aspects of jazz are now dead and have not been replaced. Kamasi's success is driven by young white people who think that a rapper whom Kamasi associated himself with represents black culture, which they think is cool, and therefore think Kamasi is cool by association. The merits of the music are secondary, at best.
  16. Sonny Rollins - Village Gate 1962 Disc 6
  17. The music is superb. This recording quality is excellent. Lots of space for Cranshaw and Higgins. Cranshaw is really impressive on this. For me so far, this is the best release of the year. I know that most of the recordings of the Rollins/Cherry band are in poor sound; I have one of the concerts that was released on Moon years ago. Are any of the live European recordings of this band in good sound? Also, does anyone know of any good in depth writing concerning this band?
  18. I've been at Judson Church for Winter Jazzfest the last couple of years. The acoustics there were not terrible, but not optimal for small jazz ensemble. I was wondering if any steps were taken to treat the room to improve the acoustics.
  19. Can you elaborate?
  20. I decided not to go this year because of the venue. Very curious as to the overall sound, seating and temperature control of the room. If I hear decent reports, I would consider goin this Saturday night. I would also be interested in hearing about the seating and acoustics. I am considering attending this weekend also.
  21. Chuck -- Will you have the cd available for sale at the Vision Festival?
