Among many options, my ultimate dream group would be: Freddie Hubbard - trumpet Joe Henderson - tenor sax Bobby Hutcherson - vibes McCoy Tyner - piano Richard Davis - bass Elvin Jones - drums Lucky for me, these cats have all played with each other at some point in their career (although, sadly, not all together in the same place at the same time).

I'm digging the Silver big time. "It's Time" may just be one of my favorite Silver tunes on record. It's surprising (and a little disappointing) that people aren't as familiar with Horace's material after 1965 or so.

Any word on when the March batch is scheduled for release?

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
milestones20 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
Have listened through a couple of times...I'm definitely liking what I'm hearing. I dig in particular his arrangement of "Round Midnight," as well as the first and fourth track (Billy Harper sounds GREAT on this one). It is, indeed, very loud, but I honestly don't mind that . Recording quality is great, the band sounds great, and I honestly like Charles' playing now more than his playing back in the 60s and 70s...it's got a somewhat more "finalized" quality whereas it still sounded like he was searching for his own sound back then. -

The singer/lyricist on "Now" is Gene McDaniels. He also wrote "Compared to What" on the Les McCann/Eddie Harris "Swiss Movement" record. -

Looking forward to this one, big time! -
Of those three, "Keystone" is the odd man out. It's very heavily influenced by underground electronica and whatnot, which is either great or horrible depending on your musical preferences. "Strange Liberation" and "Meaning and Mystery" are similar to each other in style, including the same rhythm section (Uri Caine, James Genus, Clarence Penn) and two stylistically similar saxophonists (Chris Potter on "Liberation," Donny McCaslin on "Meaning"), so if you liked "Liberation" you'll like "Meaning."

Thanks all for the info!

Anyone know anything about this record? I've heard lots of buzz about it, but it isn't out here in the States and I've never found an import version.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Solid State Recordings - Disc 1 Also, pretty much anything on the Maynard and Elvin Jones boxes. -
Picked up the Quebec and the Mobley from last month and the Silver and Morgan from this month, so far have 0 complaints. The Mobley and the Morgan are probably my 2 favorites, but I'm a sucker for anything with them on it.
-
If I had to pick 6, it'd go sumthin like this... 1) The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings - Gil Fuller 2) Silver 'n Brass/Silver 'n Wood - Horace Silver 3) Change - Andrew Hill 4) Contrasts - Larry Young 5) A New Conception - Sam Rivers 6) Natural Essence - Tyrone Washington Also would be nice to see Chant (Donald Byrd) and High Frequency (Jackie McLean), but those are the 6 I think probably have the best chance.

Charles Tolliver: "Music Inc and Big Band"

I also prefer the second album. However, this one is plenty good, too. -
Umm...any particular reason?

"The Sidewinder", while definitely not my favorite Lee Morgan record, still has many moments worth repeated listenings. "Hocus Pocus" is a really catchy tune, in my opinion.
