"The girl from martinique" is excellent. I have a vinyl rip from Rapidshare. Am I allowed to post it here? I mean, its not as if it was available commercially.
  3. Just for a change, someone whose recordings I have easy access to on local labels. All of the Rufus stuff is brilliant.
  4. Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I came across a very useful online discography site while researching Lee Morgan. http://www.jazzdisco.org/
  5. My favourite is to the left. From the list I like Into Something and Good Gracious.
  6. From Wikipedia: Radio and club dj Gilles Peterson is credited with coining the phrase Acid Jazz in the late 1980s in his BBC Radio 1 biography. Gilles Peterson describes a time when he djd at Dingwalls club in Camden, north west London. He said "We put on this old 7-inch by Mickey and the Soul Generation which was a rare groove record with a mad rock guitar intro and no beat. I started vari-speeding it so it sounded all warped. Chris Bangs got on the microphone and said, 'If that was acid house, this is acid jazz'. That's how acid jazz started, just a joke!"
  7. He's a British DJ who made his name with the BBC. Has produced a number of compilation CDs focused on acid jazz, modern jazz, Brazilian and African themes, sometimes all together. Possesses a huge collection of rare LPs and from the pure jazz side his two CDs of British jazz titled "Impressed vol 1 & 2" are great.
  8. Elvin Jones "Genesis". Only available on the Mosaic and needs a remix.
  9. MG, The 1500 series is the latest (2005) TOJC BN reissues in 24 bit remaster, and yes they cost 1500 yen. They are actually considerably cheaper than the previous versions. I know this topic of comparing sound on the various BNs has been done to death, but I have quite a few of these and they sound VG to me though I do like a "bright" sound which may not suit others.
  10. I have the 1500 Here Tis. Sounds very good. Big improvement on the old TOJC.
  11. I have yet another version on a UK label Fivefour which sounds great. They still persist in giving Patton as the organist though.
  12. Duke Robillard is not exactly new but is still making great records. Try "Guitar Groove-a-Rama", excellent mix of jazz and blues.
  13. Why not? Because you say so? It seems Mr Hans has blocked PMs or PMs from me. I want to let him know I picked "Duke Pearson" out of the air. I could have said Charlie Parker, Albert Ayler, Duke Ellington, Roscoe Mitchell or Don Ewell. It was an example. Those Duke Pearson fans are not to be messed with. I hope Chewy doesn't see this thread.
  14. This is weird, I was never able to find a Japanese edition of Inner Space or Tones at all. Thanks for the hint though, maybe I'll get this edition in my next life or something! I have the following from Japan, a mini LP 24 bit remaster issued in 2004: Maybe you should keep trying.
  15. Also used to have the LP and would love to get the CD.
  16. I found this on the net: SleepWalker — “The Voyage / Into the Sun” 12’’ (Especial Records) SleepWalker is a jazz quartet from Osaka, Japan. Their latest release is the de facto EP of last season and an absolute must have for any jazz aficionado. The first side of the 12’’, entitled “The Voyage,” is a blazing, 13-minute jazz odyssey featuring tenor sax legend Pharaoh Sanders. In the first half, the quartet slowly picks up the initially leisurely pace with an array of top-notch drum work and piano solos. Then Sanders enters with a long, wailing solo that is simply hair-raising. The second cut, “Into the Sun,” is slightly more controlled but just as soulful. A tight, upbeat jam gives way to the classy, guest vocals of jazz singer Bembe Segue. I'm definitely going to get this!!
  17. All the Blue Notes including The Right touch are now available for Y1500 from Japan. Its that easy. Why wait for a US release with (probably) inferior sound?
  18. I love Pep's but have very fond memories of A Flat, G Flat and C and always assumed it would be reissued. It is entirely blues based and that suits my taste. Here's the link to AMG: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:1taqoayayij9
  19. The one recording I REALLY want to see on CD is Yusef Lateef's A Flat, G Flat and C on Impulse. Given that everything else he did on Impulse is reissued I can't understand why his greatest record is still unavailable.
  20. They all sound great. I even like the amp buzz on Wes's Trio CD. Probably the biggest improvement I noticed was for Dolphy's Five Spot Vol 1. I hear that Chet is also a revelation but haven't got that yet.
  21. I am so peed off that I can't order these overseas! K2s for $4
  22. I have a lot of these 24 biters. Usually to get something not remasterd elsewhere (Midnight Special, Cornbread, Here Tis, Bluesnik etc). Its cheaper and faster for me to import from Japan than the States. Sound is very sharp which may not suit everyone. Overall, I'm pleased with them.
  23. FYI, all the Black Jazz CDs are available from HMV Japan as P-Vine remasters. Same artwork etc but papersleeves only.
  24. One of those perfect recordings that gets better with age. I never tire of hearing this. I played this for a Brazilian friend who was feeling homesick while overseas and she was reduced to tears.
  25. Bluesman

    Les Spann

He's also on this Bill Coleman CD from 1960:
