  3. The Laws is... not bad. Production is marred by a few MOR artifacts, but, overall, a very fine showing from Ronnie and his band.

  6. Perhaps. I thought the Debussy model was more "relevant" to the trio with Ralph Pena and Jim Hall, but I could be misremembering. Need to dig out that TALKS AND PLAYS set on CELP...

  8. I'd never really thought about this before, but it is kind of amazing to think that Giuffre's last Verve date with his quartet — IN PERSON — dates from July 1960. By March of 1961, his new trio with Bley and Swallow is making a very different kind of music. Seems/feels like a fairly rapid "evolution" to me. (Understanding that there's interrupted continuity from some of Giuffre's 50s work to the "3" recordings.)

  17. This resource may be of interest. https://hartfordjazzsociety.com/2017/07/21/native-americans-in-jazz-present-and-past/ Mildred Bailey was not a name I expected to see on this list.
  18. I wonder if they would eventually have recorded together. Another one: Paul Flaherty.
  19. I feel like maybe Gary Windo is part of this conversation, too, but that's based on a limited sample. And Windo's probably more indebted to Ayler than anyone.
