    Nice!
  2. Sharpe's solo on the title track is some epochal stuff.
  3. I mean, my favorite Ron Carter performances are probably "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and this track, so WTFDIK?
  4. Love that set! Me:
  5. Thanks! I sampled "Tempest at the Colosseum" again yesterday and agree the performances on that one are more cohesive.
  6. I find both to be "fussy" players at this stage of their careers. And I've never been a huge fan of Carter's tone. Just my opinion/preference.
  7. Prompted by this thread (thanks!), I've gone back and re-auditioned several of the V.S.O.P. records. I have to confess I'm not digging them much. Too much sound and fury for me; I'm most disappointed in Tony Williams (TBH, my expectations of Carter and Hubbard were always pretty low going in). The quality of the recordings, which separates the players and deemphasizes the notion of an ensemble (to my ears anyway) doesn't help. Would curious to know which of these dates members here consider the best/most worthwhile.
  8. So much piquant contrast! (Nelson, Dorham, Bryant, Wendell Marshall, Art Taylor)
  9. Excellent news indeed. Hoping now more people get to hear this record: https://chrismcgregorsbrotherhoodofbreath.bandcamp.com/album/in-his-good-time.
  10. And SEXTANT, an ostensibly "fusion" record, is about as far out as Herbie ever got.
  11. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I find it an interesting bit of trivia... Shaw and Garnett also play together on Andrew Hill's LIFT EVERY VOICE, recorded more than a year earlier (when they were both with Blakey, I presume).
  12. I too like the Steeplechase date. There appears to be a solo recital on Progressive (MEMORIES), but I've never heard it. Progressive have reissued a couple of LPs (A PEARL FOR ERROL and A PRAYER FOR LILIANE) on a single CD. Edit: MEMORIES can be auditioned via Spotify. https://open.spotify.com/album/1OdFnWqBzjISimE3JyUJXs
  13. Doesn't Donald Byrd play pocket trumpet on FUEGO? Recording date: October 4, 1959. The "toy instruments" were part of the whole Ornette Coleman Quartet package at the time. I can imagine those visuals might have made the music sound even more disorienting / alienating to someone like Mingus whose avant-garde roots were more Third Stream.
  14. All the Centro-matic. https://centro-matic.bandcamp.com/album/24-songs-free-download
  15. I'd almost call it revelatory! Excellent stuff.
