Artists you know well but have never really liked
mikelz777 replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
I wonder if there are players who are better as a sideman than leader? As if the player thinks "It's not my name on it -- it won't 'cost' me anything to take chances..." When it comes to his own name, he plays it safe: "Don't want to scare anyone away..." I don't know if he's better as a sideman than he is as a leader but I personally prefer Oscar Peterson much more as a sideman than I do as a leader. I'm also on the same page with Clark Terry. "Swahili" is the only title I have in his name. -
Thanks for the responses. You were right about the exchange rates. It looks like the current market rate for 1 USD = .687677 GBP. Paypal's rate for 1 USD = .667699 GBP. Thankfully, it's not a huge difference and would cost me less than a dollar more than the regular market rates would.

Artists you know well but have never really liked
mikelz777 replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
The names that come to mind for me have already been mentioned. When I first got into jazz, I bought up a lot of Scott Hamilton because he was "safe" and very easy to listen to. (Plus his used discs were available pretty cheap.) When I read descriptions of him as a "journeyman" player I was somewhat resentful because I really enjoyed him and his undeniable talent and thought that the term was dismissive. As time passed and my jazz ear matured I found that I never listened to him any more. I'm not sure what it is but it seems to be a lack of any edge, passion and/or soul. When I listen to his stuff it's kind of like sonic wallpaper, it's just "there". As it turns out, the "journeyman" title was pretty apt. When I started going through them to sell the discs I had the hardest time choosing which few to hold onto because they all more or less sounded the same. I still think he's a great talent but he just doesn't move me any more. Dave Brubeck is another. I bought up a bunch of his discs early on and then over time I discovered what I really liked about him was Paul Desmond. I ended up selling all my Brubeck discs and now only own the 5-CD "Time" box set. (for Paul Desmond) -
Third Silver's Serenade. It's the only one on your list of titles that I own and that's by choice. I'm fine with not owning any of the others.

I just checked my copy and the stray trumpet note is not there. I don't know when this set was pressed but I've had it for quite a while. (#3446)

Thanks for the response but I still wonder. I thought that Paypal (or Ebay) would charge a fee for having to convert my purchase price from dollars to pounds. It seems they want to ding everyone with a charge whenever it's possible.

I've been searching Paypal's "Help" section to no avail. Maybe someone here can help me with a question. If I'm a U.S. buyer purchasing a "buy it now" item from a U.K. seller in United Kingdom pounds via Paypal, do I pay any kind of fees to either Paypal or Ebay or do I just pay whatever the conversion amount would be for that day?

The listing on Amazon must be messed up. The listing indicates it's a single disc with only 4 songs listed.

THE JAZZ CRUSADERS reunion tour
mikelz777 replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
So has anyone here actually seen one of their reunion shows yet? If so, I'd really appreciate a review of the show. While we wait for someone to (hopefully) chime in, please enjoy the following clips from the Frankly Jazz show. Young Rabbits Freedom Sound Tortoise And The Hare (The video is bad on this one. You get the reverse or "negative" of what it should be.) Do you happen to have a link or the address? -
I just caught up with the most recent episode of Breaking Bad. Wow!! That was quite an ending!

THE JAZZ CRUSADERS reunion tour
mikelz777 replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
So what are the reviews of this show? What kind of stuff did they play? (early? late? both? stuff from "solo" careers?) How did they sound? Like the Jazz Crusaders or the pale imitation after Henderson left? I'd be curious to catch one of their tour dates but I'd probably be a lot less interested if they were only playing the less jazzy stuff from the "Free As The Wind" era and later. -
The Borders closest to me has totally eliminated their CD section so I'm not really interested in them any more unless I'm in the area, need to kill some time and there's nothing else going on. Sometimes the coupons can be worthwhile. The 40% off coupon roused my interest but that's off the retail price so it actually only brings the price down to where it it sometimes competitive with other retailers. It's rare that I find the price after coupon to be compelling enough to buy an item there (or online) rather than somewhere else.

I like my JSP Django box sets. It's hard to go wrong with them. The sound is good, they're readily available and very affordable. I have two of them totaling 9 discs which is all the Django that I really need.

The Yankees don't seem to have any problems against the Twins taking the first two in our own ball park. I think I've just seen the rest of the Twins season played out. We'll do well this season, have a great shot at winning the division and then lose to the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs.

Muskrat Ramble from Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens box set. As I was listening to it I just had to say to myself, "Man, Pops could play!". '
-
Barney Kessel - Some Like It Hot What a line-up! Barney Kessel, Art Pepper, Joe Gordon, Jimmy Rowles, Jack Marshall, Monty Budwig and Shelly Manne. Yusef Lateef - Lost In Sound A straight-ahead date where Lateef sticks to tenor and I do so love him on tenor

That Bix and Tram set is definitely worth checking out.

Breaking Bad was another good episode. We get some answers and see the beginning of what is sure to be a problem. Hank is going to need extensive physical therapy and other medical care of which only a portion is covered by their insurance and could end up costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars. Skyler suspects that Walt’s “activities” are to blame for the situation Hank is now in and concocts a story for her sister that Walt’s past absences and their troubles have stemmed from Walt being into illegal gambling and that he has profited from it to the tune of seven figures. Skyler assures her sister that they will help take care of the medical bills. Jesse is in a drug counseling group whose participants look as if they are there only to avoid prison or whatever. He’s increasingly frustrated with the situation working with/for Walt and Gus and thinks they are getting ripped off being paid only 3 million when Gus stands to profit so much more for their efforts. Saul proposes Jesse buy a legitimate business to launder their drug money and to keep the IRS at bay and not wondering where he’s getting all this money and paying no taxes. Jesse thinks paying taxes and a percentage to Saul is B.S. and he’s not having it. He proposes getting back into the business with his slacker/drug buddies. Jesse noticed that when he and Walt were weighing out the meth that their batches were going over the expected yields by 1-2 lbs. It looks like he wants to start skimming that excess and selling it on his own with his buddies. (Trouble!) Walt meets with Gus to clear the air and lay all the cards on the table. It’s here that we learned that is was Gus that had called Hank to warn him of the brothers coming to kill him. He wanted a shootout so there would be a big reaction from the U.S. and Mexican governments so that there would be a big crackdown on the Mexican meth ops shutting down traffic south of the border thus giving Gus total control north of the border. It’s here that we also learn that after the three months is over that Walt can continue cooking on an open-end basis. I'm looking forward to seeing where these latest developments take us.

Thanks for reminding me! I missed it as well. Lately, by the time it rolls around on Sundays I've been too tired to watch it so I've been letting it slip by knowing I can catch it on "On Demand". I need to play some catch-up and watch the latest episodes of "Breaking Bad" as well as "Fringe" which I missed. I'll report when I get a chance to watch it.
-
I never saw the original but yes, it's based on the "V" from the early 80's which apparently was a 2-part mini series.
-
I hope I'm wrong but last night's episode of "Lost" didn't exactly assure me that this is going to have a cool ending. The whole "protecting the light in the cave" thing seems pretty hokey and there seems to be a ton of loose ends to resolve in just a 2-hour final.
-
There's no way either of those shows was anywhere near as bad as "V". That one was about as pleasurable as a root canal. "Heroes" became a muddled mess which lost my household's viewership a long time ago. (2nd season?) I was somewhat disappointed to hear that "Flash Forward" wasn't going to get to unwind a little more but at the same time, I don't think that I'm going to miss it. (For some reason, I hated the whole Olivia/Lloyd storyline and Lloyd in general.) Still, I liked "Flash Forward" much better than "V" of which I'm quickly losing interest.
