  1. With Christmas money and other windfalls, I went on a spree over the last couple of weeks before a self-imposed ban on buying new music. Starting Feb. 1st, I want to go at least 6 months without a new purchase and spend some time getting to know the music I already have a bit better. I'll have to do this in parts. PART 1 A Little Horace Silver
  2. Proper's "Hillbilly Boogie". It's one of the very few things that knocked jazz out of my CD player in the last year and I keep going back to it. It's also an incredible bargain. Have some cold beer on hand then throw this set on, it's a great listen and a lot of fun!
  3. When I'm in the mood for a little Stan Getz, I go to this one a lot. It's one of the first ones that popped into my head when thinking about favorites.
  4. My fingers are crossed and they'd have a buyer here but I haven't heard any news.
  5. Probably not. A recent Monk Mosaic sat at about $60.00 for 4 days before the final bidding day and ended up selling for $160.00!! For a 3-CD set! At least the Parker set is still in print which should make it more reasonable.
  6. I don't think Horace's new group was as tight as his old one, at least at that point. Guy Do you think that the material or their approach to the material shifted a bit as well? Maybe it's more structured with less space for soloing or just not as loose/spontaneous?
  7. Is it because you heard a bit of the title track in Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" on the radio once too often? I love Steely Dan and I think what they did to adapt that "Song For My Father" bit to "Rikki" was brilliant. (I actually prefer what Steely Dan did with it but I did hear that first so I'm probably biased.) Fortunately, I rarely listen to popular radio so I don't have the opportunity to burn out on it.
  8. As is par for the course, this site ends up costing me even more money. All this talk of Horace Silver sent me on internet shopping trip. I ended up buying Six Pieces Of Silver, The Stylings Of Silver, Finger Poppin', and Blowin' The Blues Away. The only other Silver I have as a leader is the one with the Jazz Messengers, Horace-scope and Doin' The Thing which gets the most play out of the three I currently own. Silver's Blue and The Cape Verdean Blues are tempting me as well. I know it's supposed to be a classic, but Song For My Father doesn't work for me enough to pick that one up again. I don't know what it is about that one--too arranged? too formulaic? I can't seem to put my finger on it or put it into words.
  9. The seller must be thinking, "If I put this price on my CDs, I only have to sell one!"
  10. Ebay Hmm...pre-owned in pre-owned condition, no case, no artwork. I'm on the fence. What, no shipping?! I may have to jump on this one.
  11. I love the whole sound and feel of this one. An excellent date that will always be at the top of my Silver playlist.
  12. I came via the all about jazz web site. Over time, several posts made mention of organissimo and someone ended up directing me here for a thread that discussed one of my jazz questions. I was here for months before I even discovered that Organissimo was a band. Of the two sites, I have been tending to spend more time here.
  13. Great in quality and incredible variety. This (along with vols 2 & 4) is probably one of the best compilation sets I own.
  14. There are actually 3 JSP box sets of either 4 or 5 discs on Django. I own the first two and hardily endorse both boxes for both content and sound. You could probably buy all three for around half the price of the Mosaic. [After re-reading the thread I realized that this is over 3 years old! I still stand by my recommendation though.]
  15. They'll be buying the steak knives and enjoying a filet mignon as they have a servant turn on a spotlight to illuminate their money-counting rooms.
  16. I see a lot of bad signs. Weddings, babies and the musical episode. (Although the episode with their limited musical take on West Side Story worked for me.) They may already be carving the headstone.
  17. I love these Quadromania sets and this one is no exception. This one was inspired by the Condon Mob Mosaic going on last chance. I wanted music in that vein but much more affordable. These sets certainly fill the bill.
  18. I was really tempted to pick up the Condon Mob set but in the end, couldn't justify spending that much money on another Mosaic. To assuage my hunger for music in that vein I went on the cheap and picked up the Membran Quadromania sets for Pee Wee Russell, Bill Davison, Bobby Hackett and Kid Ory. That's 16 CDs worth of material for around $30-$35.00. I'm very happy with the quality and content of all the sets with the single exception of one of the Ory discs which has a live set that is a bit rough. Those four sets coupled with my JSP Eddie Condon box set will keep me pretty well set for that Chicago/Dixieland/New Orleans flavor of jazz for quite some time.
  19. As much as I enjoyed watching Carla move to the Latin number, I gotta say I pretty much hated tonights musical episode. I think I hated this one as much as the episode that was like a staged sitcom. Sure, sometimes you have to take chances, but they seem to be trying too hard. Just when I thought this season was finally getting back into it's old stride with last weeks episode, this one comes along. I'm sorry to say that this season has basically sucked so far.
  20. You won't be disappointed. I wasn't at all familiar with Parlan and gave him a listen when someone recommended him as someone I would probably like. The entire Mosaic box set was available to listen to short sound samples at the All Music web site and I was sold after listening to them. I can't think of a single disappointing date on the entire set. This one's a real winner.
  21. They were never intended for release but instead, for Potts' personal use. Lester was under contract with Granz at the time. I believe a bribe of a nice bottle of brandy persuaded Prez to allow the recording. I have all 5 and enjoy all of them. The weakest link, IMO, is drummer Jim Lucht. Prez allowed a lot of space for the others to solo and in this case, I think he was too generous. The trade-offs between drums and sax can get a bit tedious at times. I think that Prez was in fine form and relaxed throughout the entire recorded engagement. I remember being a bit lukewarm on these recordings the first time I heard them and they sat on the shelf for quite a while. Upon revisting them some time later I had to wonder what I was thinking the first time around. They are all well worth the listen and definitely recommended.
  22. Aren't those who take something supposed to offer up something in turn? It doesn't seem to be happening that way, just taking when someone happens to offer up something. (i.e. taking but not "paying forward")
  23. Check this out. Barely out of print and this guy wants $100.00 per disc before shipping!! He says he'd like to make a final sale. I'm sure he would! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1
  24. "That Devilin' Tune" vol. 3, disc 1 of 9. There's a lot more to explore here and I'm diggin' it a lot. I love the variety and exposure to a lot of artists I've never even heard of.
  25. Cool! I won that exact same camera (pictured) in my pre-teens as well. After a while, it got harder and harder to find that 110 film.
