  1. Indeed. I will never understand the aclaim that RVG gets when DuNann is relatively ignored.
  2. Unfortunate name. I keep thinking of Tom Scott and then wonder what Jim's been smokin'. Must investigate further...
  3. Would North or South make a difference?
  4. Johnny, I'm not sure how bookings work and I'm not that close to any club owners/bookers, but you can get info on a lot of L.A. clubs from here... http://www.lajazz.com/
  5. Wish I could be there, John. I love Scott and would be very interested in hearing your interpretation of his tunes. You guys thinking of recording? btw, what's a "Monktail?"

  8. John Patton - That Sinking Feeling Don Cherry - Sympathy for Improvisors Baby Face Willette - Stop, Look & Listen Hank Mobley - A Slice of the Pizza Booker Ervin - The Over-Under-Sideways-Down-and-In-Between not BN, but Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abscessed Tooth"
  9. Tina Brooks - "I'm a Dude Dammit!" Cecil Taylor - "Eunuch Structures" Lou Donaldson - "Ham Sammich Blues" The Three Sounds - "Sounds the Same" Hank Mobley - "Mom's Mobley"
  10. I know I'm in way over my head here, but ignorance hasn't stopped me before. Don't think I've ever heard any EAI - and don't think I'd probably dig it all that much given the sound of it here - but while I've no doubt that EAI may be avant-garde (or avant-gourde if you'd rather), Jon's description above makes me wonder if it can even be considered "jazz."
  11. The Sonny Clark Trio disc on Audio Fidelity. I think it's oop now, but you should still be able to find it fairly easily. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:28jweay64xh7 I know some of you guys have problems with Steve Hoffman, both personally and professionally, but this is one of the best-sounding discs I've ever heard. It's SACD, but has a CD layer as well.
  12. Don't want to step on Mr. Bassman's sign-up thread, but since you're all in the BFT forum anyway... Still a couple of turns away, but I'm prepping BFT 44 and had a question for y'all. I vaguely recall this issue brought up before with some disagreement, but how again does everyone feel about rare or unreleased stuff included on the BFTs? More specifically, I was considering including at least one disc of material taken from LPs that aren't yet on CD. If i remember, a few people didn't like the idea of not being able to buy something that they heard and liked on a BFT. Personally, I dig the rare stuff, but that's just me. I make no promises yet as to what i may decide to do - maybe one disc of LP-only stuff, maybe both or neither - but I'll cetainly take any suggestions into account.
  13. "Jazz: music to get your ass moving" As good a definition as I've seen in a while. And before I forget, Clem - haven't read any of Wurlitzer's novels, but i am of course familiar with some of his film work. Read an unproduced SP of his from a few years back that my notes refer to as "misguided action-adventure." An attempt t go mainstream, it appears, that didn't work.
  14. Would I be out of line - or just plain dumb - to ask just what is considered the avante-garde these days... and perhaps more importantly: why is it considered so?
  15. Fuck Manhattan. Know how much a-g we get here in L.A.? Last time (only time i recall) Ornette played in L.A. was at the frakin' Disney concert hall. Now a-g isn't often my cuppa, but I'd at least like the chance every once in a while....

    Red Mitchell

Love the Clark Terry-Red Mitchell duo album - on Enja i believe. Even better was seeing them in person at Monterey ('86?). Never would have thought that trumpet-bass would work, at least for a whole album/set, but it was most enjoyable.
  17. This should get interesting...
  18. Just to be clear though - even using the Inport you still need either a phono preamp or a receiver with a built-in phono preamp. It's not just output levels but RIAA EQ curves you need to worry about - which is why you can't just plug your turntable into any jack on the back of your amp/receiver.
  19. I'm intrigued by the Inport (and the other suggestions as well), but was wondering what advantages it gives to just going from amp/preamp directly into your sound card? I have the burning software from Roxio already, so that's probably not an issue.
  20. It's all cool unless one chooses to live in the desert.
  21. but we were passed over on the east coast swing! I heard it had something to do with the stingrays you have down there...
  22. Found my extra copy of D1/2. Sounds like now's the time to Ebay it. Just kidding, Shane, it's on hold for you...
  23. If you take but a quick look at their website you wouldn't be surprised that Rusch might not be entirely web-savvy. The mag is fine and i have no reason not to respect Rusch as editor, but their site sucks.
