Good answer. Why not play it on a 4 track machine for even more flexibility? I know the answer which is the same as the reason to avoid a simple stereo playback. FWIW, I think the highest quality transfer can be made by transferring on a full mono machine and patching problems by picking undamaged bits via multitracking. It takes more work but pays sonic results. You do have to deal with matching tape noise beds but it works very well. I certainly hope someone is paying for high quality copies of these original masters as they whip by the tape heads. I told you he'd have an impressive answer. The proof, though, is in the pudding as they say. I've heard some of Steve's work on these tapes (not the MJQ specifically, but others from the OJC catalog) and they are by far the best sounding versions of this material that I've ever heard.

Don't forget, a set isn't really complete without a copy of the phone bill showing the time/date you called to order the set and a photo (digital is acceptable) of the postman delivering it to your door.

Hell, Belefonte - not to mention Bob Weir, C.J. Chenier, and my own wife - have been telling us this for years. -
How come, in the TV Sucks thread, I admitted to watching a lot of tv and yet haven't seen a single one of these celebrity Geico spots, but you guys who always complain about the boob tube, hate all the new shows, and insist that you haven't watched anything in years are suddenly fans of some frickin' commercial? btw, I like the caveman ad...

I usually listen to a BFT disc several times before writing any comments, but I thought I'd do it a bit differently this time and go wth first impressions. This disc was a mixed bag for me - it started out very strong, then progressed with tunes that I either liked or simply was a bit indifferent to. I didn't dislike/hate anything (i rarely do), but a couple of tracks I could probably do without. Regardless, Luca, a very enjoyable and interesting selection of tunes - many thanks! Only a couple jumped out at me as possibly familiar, and I really appreciate that as I love these BFTs for introducing me to new things... 1. I like this – groovy, growling bari sax, almost sexual-feeling, like stripper music Might go on a bit too long though since there’s a lot of repetition. 2. Yeah, now we’re talking! Dueling baris? No idea who, but I wanna know… Hmm. Even more saxes added to the mix or overdubbing? Great mood! 3. A bit of a letdown after the last two, but this is a solid, groovy number. Thought it perhaps a bit generic-sounding at first, but I really dig the bassist. The bass almost *sounds like Eberhard Weber, but the style of music doesn’t fit for it to be him. 4. Sounds like an older recording at first, but then sounds quite modern once the ‘bone and bass solo. I should know the name of this tune, but… 5. Love the room presence of this recording – very echo-y and atmospheric. Okay, don’t care for it so much after the sax solo. The violin, I would guess, is Billy Bang, so maybe one of those Hat discs. ??? 6. Nice transition! 7. Not bad, but a bit dull as well. Tries to sound like “vintage” big band, but I suspect it’s something much more recent. Technically good, but the “feel” seems somehow inauthentic. 8. My dislike of the violin in Track 5 notwithstanding, I really like jazz violin and this is no exception. Country-jazz. If they played jazz on Hee-Haw, it would probably sound something like this. Yee-haw! 9. This is cool – an unusual/eclectic mix of sounds. Is that a bass guitar or some sort of organ? Lots o’ terrific fuzz/grunge on it. 10. Hmm. Maybe a bit too Richie Cole for my tastes at the moment. 11. How can anyone not recognize this classic tune? Love the way the notes bend in the solo. I may have this one. 12. Okay. More later… 13. Guitar sounds more classical than jazz. I’d guess Laurindo Almeida, but it’s probably some European guy I’ve never heard before. Lovely. 14. Duel saxes (or clarinet?) are initially grating to me, but I like this much more during the solo. 15. Paul Bley on piano? Odd piano sound, though, almost sounds a bit “prepared.” Interesting, but goes on far too long without really going anywhere for me. A lot of this sort of improvised a-g jazz is better heard live imo. 16. Should know this tune too as it sounds familiar. 17. Heh. Very funny!

Eagerly looking forward to this as I love both Metheny and Meldau. Not sure what to expect, though, as Metheny's duo albums can be hit or miss. I absolutely love "Missouri Sky" with Haden, but Pat's album with Jim Hall is a bore.

Why don't you guys just start a torrent? So much easier...

Or you can wait (and wait...) until Concord has their next sale.

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
RDK replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
When i was in Belgium a month ago I took the train to Koln just to see the cathedral drop in at 2001. And you didn't offer to pick up a bunch of stuff for the rest of us??? Actually I would have (for a couple of local guys at least) but they didn't have any of the "big box" stuff that i wanted in stock. -

What's a nene? If you mean stingray, I'd just surrender all the crustaceans and shellfish you may be carrying and let him have them. Damn, I wish i had Chuck's skill with smilies...

I haven't heard multiple versions of this one - either have the original OJC or have it on the Coltrane box if it's included there too - but having heard many other OJCs and K2s, and a handful of the SACDs and RVGs, I'd probably recommend the K2 unless you have an SACD player and can afford to spend more for the SACD. I'd probably narrow my choice down between the K2 and the RVG and leave the decision to personal preference. Bertrand: some might say the only problem with the RVG is that Rudy remastered it!

I'm heading to Hawaii in a few weeks. Is there anything I need to worry about if i encounter a nene?
-
But that's exactly what Al wants to do - just buy one. Can anyone fault him for wanting to buy the "best-sounding" one when multiple versions are available?

I couldn't agree more. The shows are very entertaining. Any chance you remember where you got 'Weather' and 'Baseball' from ? I can't find them. Hmm. Can't seem to get a direct link to the topic in question, but seek out one entitled "First 7 XM Links." What I did, after getting to the Discussion Forum, was do a search for "Theme Show," limiting the search to the Rare Recordings folder. Search works much like it does here. There are several pages of related links, most pointing to Rapidshare files containing mp3 or wma versions of the shows. "Baseball" is a bit harder to find now since it was included on a bonus CD released with some copies of Dylan's new album - so some of them pulled the mp3 copies. On the left hand side of the page you'll see 'White Man Stew', click and shows 1 -18 are all archived with links. I didn't realise this until I'd spent aging searching for the shows one by one. Heh. That's easier!

Is this anything like Paul Flaherty's duets with John Candy?

I wasn't aware that the Site-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named couldn't be named. What gives?

Received the discs yesterday, Luca, and just started to listen to them now. Thanks!

From the thread title I thought Larry had taken up an instrument. Seriously, I hope Konitz makes it back to L.A. soon. Saw him here a couple of years back and he was splendid. What a character!

Nothing to do with him being a "cultural icon" imo. But he was an international TV star (whether you heard of him or not) who died during a freakish encounter with a stingray, all of which was captured on camera. How could something like that not get press?
