  1. Thanks Nate. Either Rusch is talking about someone else entirely or Cadence's research staff is worth shit...
  2. Thread title scared the shit out of me as I forgot that he had been injured and thought it was a very recent thing! Saw Phil just a couple of weeks ago at the Oliver Nelson tribute at Luckman and had been planning to attend his lecture series this past weekend but couldn't get away at the last minute. Yes, he does have a new series in progess, but most are weekdays and I doubt I'll be able to get away from work for them. Have a list here at home if anyone needs info, but I haven't found anything posted on-line about it. It is good that he is back playing again.
  3. Chuck's right. As most BFTs will prove, 90% of the time i can't tell one organist from another. That doesn't mean i don't enjoy them though and shouldn't be able to have my favorites.
  4. I'd be surprised if any intelligent jazz musician weren't a fan of Jaki's. I've found that most musicians are more open-minded and familiar with other artists and genres outside of their immediate arena.
  5. I've always prefered tower speakers no matter what room they're in.
  6. "Why Did Leroy Walk Across the Road?" I believe is the title.
  7. I'm pretty sure I have an extra twin-pack of Discs 1 & 2. I'll see if i can dig it up tonight. Drop me an email later in case i forget.
  8. Looking at the answer I'm starting to regret that I missed this one (no worries; I haven't the time for them all). But there are some interesting tracks here. Great taste, Tom!
  9. And after that it's as easy as breathing. And twice as much fun!
  10. Am listening to this right now... the sound on this is GREAT! Some wonderful playing all around, and Monday's voice is captured nicely on this recording. After hearing some of her work on CD, I wondered how well she would sound live. Well, I got my answer... this is some damn fine stuff! I'll definitely be looking for her the next time she plays in Southern California. Cheers, Shane Downloading this now. I'm very eager to hear this since despite all the praise heaped on her I've yet to see/hear a lick of her recorded work.
  11. I can see it now: "2+2=5"
  12. The really unfortunate thing - provided that the woman wasn't actually raped, of course, and it's increasingly looking like she wasn't - is that these kids' lives and reputations have been ruined. Where are the shield laws when it comes to that? And to prosecutorial misconduct?
  13. Not all at the same time I hope!
  14. You're shuffling off in the fall? Sorry to hear that, Mark, though it does seem a good time to go...
  15. Hey Adam - Yeah, I did go (sorry; missed your earlier post). Surprisingly big crowd - bigger than i expected at least, though quite a few seemed to leave between sets. I wasn't quite sure what to expect since I'm not a great fan of solo (or duo) sax improv, especially the more avantgarde stuff that sounds like "two seagulls fucking" ©. But the only sax of that sort came from Roscoe Mitchell, whose solo set consisted of three long pieces that was (mostly) the kind of screeching that I generally don't care for. Some of it was intersting, of course, and his circular breathing technique was amazing to behold. My friend Chris likes that stuff more than I do, and he enjoyed that part of the program much more that I. Jarman really surprised me and I dug his solo set, though he was often accompanied by a younger (local?) kid on soprano and guitar. He sung a lot, too, at least if you go by a very liberal definition of "singing." But I love that sort of raw, world music-y stuff. He spoke to the audience quite a bit and seemed a very warm and extremely spiritual man. Two of his (short) pieces, btw, were Dylan's "Wicked Messenger" and the Beatles "Within You Without You." Cool! The second set was one long improv between Jarman and Mitchell, which had both performing percussion - first together, then individually while the other solo'd. I liked this part quite a bit, too, though the repetitiveness of the rhythm was a bit tiresome after 45 minutes or so. They didn't play drums, but some sort of (African?) mini-vibes/glockenspiel instrument. This part of the performance reminded me very much of the AEC. Overall, I'm much more familiar with Mitchell's work than Jarman's and tend to prefer Mitchell, but in this setting Jarman appealed to me more. My friend Chris, on the other hand, prefered Mitchell's solo performance, so mileage does indeed vary.
  16. Nah, Nessa's "welcome" would just scare them away.
  17. Second (third?) the Pro-Ject/Music Hall tables from Audio Advisor, or look for a used one on Audiogon. Also, most audiophiles would recommend a belt drive table over a direct drive.
  18. In breaking news, Bush just declared war on the Yankees...
  19. Well, the news is now reporting that an experienced flight instructor was flying with him, so the "inexperienced" part is probably moot. It's also looking more and more like some mechanical failure caused the plane to "turn" into the building. I agree, though, that it makes little sense for small planes to fly so close to the city.
  20. Eh, no one in H'wood gives a flying fuck about DePalma anymore, so he can flip us the bird all he likes. Seriously, though, I'm a big Ellroy fan, but I generally hate DePalma, so I saw Dahlia with mixed expectations. There were parts of it that I thought were good - better than expected - and parts that I thought were absolutely horrible/laughable. Overall, it's disappointing - not so good. L.A. Confidential was far, far better.
  21. Holy crap! Did anyone else see the Season 3 opener? This is easily one of the best shows on television. At least the most ballsy with its heroic depiction of suicide bombers striking out against an occupying force.
  22. Ah, but the mark of a true film genius is knowing when to be stylish and when not to be. Regardless, I otherwise agree with Stefan - it's a terrific film. Saw it at a 2 pm matinee in a packed theater (was surprised by that!). Highly recommended.
  23. That's great! I'd hate to buy a needledrop CD made from an LP that I already own (the second edition). -_-
  24. I suppose some of the conservatives on this board might choose "King" George.
  25. Hey, I voted for Kong. He could beat the shit out of all the other Kings on that list!
