  1. Maybe he's a jazz fan who's been posting here on this very forum under an alias. Let's see, who's been try to rile us up? Hardbop, is it you? Or maybe Clem or Aric or even Berigan? B)
  2. Heh. I was just thinking the same thing. I think it's "Haven't A Fucking Clue" By the way, how do you guys add that little "TM" up there?
  3. I had considered editing out Elvin's "St. Louis Blues" announcement, but then decided to leave it in as a hint. I wonder how (if at all) it would have affected anyone's guesses?
  4. RDK

    Elvin is dead

Off to that great Gig in the Sky... RIP
  5. But if I used Red's version, Dan, then you would have guessed it right away and what kind of BFT would that have been, huh?
  6. You guys are good! But I didn't think that too many of these would stump you. Glad you're enjoying things, but I'm also rather glad to see that there are a few tracks that one or more of you dislike. I often find the DKDC or WTF? responses more interesting. It's also very interesting to me - especially when viewing things from the opposite side for once - to see how some of you listen to, experience, or even approach "jazz" in different ways than me. Already, in just the few comments posted, I'm realizing things about some of these tracks that I've known for years that I never noticed before. I think that's cool...
  7. That J.J.J. box is callin' to me, but I gotta go with the "last chance" impulses first. Just ordered both Vee-Jay sets earlier today.
  8. I don't mean to keep pummeling this deceased equine, but why is/should this be different from the drug company's drug patent term? Is it just because the drug company "made a killing" (profited greatly) from their product while most jazz doesn't sell that well? Or is creative product different from commercial product? For the record, I think this Jazz Factory release sucks, but I'm more than a bit perplexed by the inconsistent views expressed here and elsewhere. If it's okay for a patent to expire, why not a copyright? Or, conversely, if we desire an unlimited term on one, why not the other?
  9. See, I rationalize my Mosaic purchases the opposite way. Living in California, whatever I might spend on jazz in a given month is usually such a small fraction of my mortgage that I barely notice it. At least that's what I tell my wife...
  10. Ah, I just ordered both. You guys owe me two hundred bucks!
  11. I think I'm gonna spring for the Chambers-Kelly box as I've got almost none of that while I have at least some of the Wayne Shorter sessions from the Morgan-Shorter box. If anyone's put off by the alternate takes, here's what I counted: There are 35 alternates on the Morgan-Shorter box and 28 on the Chambers-Kelly (though five of those on the Chambers-Kelly are relatively short alts of "Scotch & Water," so overall it has a lesser percentage of alts than the other one). Ah, hell, maybe I'll just buy both anyway. I can always sell the damn thing in a few weeks after it's sold out...
  12. Hey, maybe Water can release "Train Wreck"
  13. Ah, hell! Noted and corrected - thanks!
  14. Well okay, you should all be receiving your discs any day now. I sent the first batch off last Saturday to the furthest spots of Eastern Europe and to a few others who advised that their mail service is particularly slow. I then sent the bulk of the international packages off on Tuesday, followed by domestic deliveries on Thursday and Friday. I mention this only in the hopes that we might be able to get a better idea of how long it takes for a package to reach various destinations when sent from the same location (in this case, Los Angeles). Consider it a side experiment if you will that may benefit future BFT bulk mailings... I want to thank those who offered to help burn or distribute, but I ended up handling it all myself as I was a bit behind schedule as it was and it was simply more convenient (albeit a bit more expensive) for me to get them all out on my own. I never realized just how many participants (or forum members in general for that matter) reside overseas. I thought that was pretty cool; Organissimo is more "global" than I thought. B) I hope nobody is daunted by the number of tracks spread over the two discs - I fear I got a bit carried away. But it sure was fun to put these tracks together. It forced me to pull out some discs that I haven't spun in many years and revisit some favorite tracks. I don't think there's anything too obscure here, but I think (hope?) there are some surprises. I won't feel like I've done my job if there's not at least one DKDC from someone. After considering various themes over the past few months, I have to report that BFT #11 is theme-less. It's just stuff that I dig: some old favorites, a few new discoveries, and a couple of classics that everyone should know. The Bonus Disc is a different story and in some ways it was even more fun for me to put together. It does have a musical theme that should be pretty obvious, though there are a few oddities tossed in for good measure. I hope you enjoy it. One final note: several tracks, if not immediately obvious, should be fairly easy to determine based on clues in the songs, such as lyrics and, in at least one case, the leader introducing his bandmates. Editing the intro, I felt, undermined the "feeling" of the tune, so I left it in. But please try to listen to it and perhaps figure it out (it shouldn't be too hard) before running to AMG, which would give it away immediately. Now go to it!
  15. Now *that's* a blunt!
  16. Dan, I think you have Jasmine mixed up with the other Hawaiian chick - heck, I can't even remember her name now. *She's* the one who broke down all the time; I don't recall seeing Jasmine cry before. I could, of course, be wrong - it's been known to happen...
  17. The 3800 is a beast! Should be a fine machine. I have a "lowly" 1800 and love it to death.
  18. Ah, hell, Alexander had to go and bring race into it. Seriously, I think you're completely right about the "cute" part, but I really don't think race had anything to do with it (other than the two divas, who happen to both be black, canceling each other out). Diana has *a lot* of teen fans - those with speed dialers and free time on their hands. I think Jasmine has fewer die-hard supporters, but Simon was real hard on her the other night - bringing a 17-year old to tears! - and I think that may have caused a backlash of sorts that caused more people to vote for her than otherwise would have.
  19. Well, the "problem" is most likely that La Toya and Fantasia both had the same basic fan base, thereby splitting the votes. From what I understand, voting tends to be close. I remember when one of the Johns was voted off a few weeks back. Seacrest said that there were 26 million votes cast the night before. There were six contestants left at the time. And he said that John (who had the fewest number of votes that night) still had over 4 million votes. So that leaves less than two million votes split between six different people as the margin between them.
  20. Okay, fess up - who here actually votes? As much as I dig the show, I have never once voted. I'm content to sit on the sidelines and watch it go down, but I'm too lazy to vote. Who *does* vote? Likely a lot of kids with time on their hands. So I guess we deserve who we get...
  21. Well so much for "easy money." Please, somebody, keep me away from Vegas at all costs! Oh well. Don't know why I'm so surprised. I hate to sound elitist - but hell, this is a jazz forum after all - but I always thought the great majority of the voting public were idiots...
  22. As will quoting myself. (Isn't that a "double?")
  23. Don't you all just love Spring, with romance in the air and cicadas chirping in the trees?
  24. Last I looked, Ameoba in Hollywood had a couple of RRK boxes for around $135.
  25. Misc - Non-Political 25% Anyone else see that link for the number of gratuitous, number-padding posts? Mine was a whopping 57%!
