They'll surely make more. If not, EMI is stupider than anyone realized as these will be downloaded by the tens of thousands.

Since when does X-mas music have anything to do with Christianity?

I think it's a cool idea. The only thing I'd like better is a Tom Waits Christmas album! Ever hear "Dylan Does Dr. Seuss?" (You might still be able to find it on the net.)

Great lineup! I'll be there Monday night at least. http://www.angelcityjazzfestival.com/ And a related story about some more "underground" jazz venues in Los Angeles... http://www.latimes.com/theguide/music/la-e...0,6659543.story

What, all 2 or 3 of them? edit: never mind, I see it's been covered.

Is there even a need for a 60's Mobley set? Aren't most (all?) of the individual albums in-print or at least easily obtainable? Mobley' one artist that's well served by BN.

Sneak Preview? Well, I work for Universal.

Saw it earlier today. Liked but didn't love it. Don't want to give anything away until more have seen it.

I guess I'm not much of a completest. I probably have around 50 Ellington CDs/LPs, 30+ by Mingus, most of the official releases by Monk, Coltrane, etc. - those "Complete Whatever" boxes come in handy - but I've never felt the need to acquire everything by a particular artist, whether good or bad. I'm actually kind of "Ellington'd out" at the moment, despite considering him one of the top 2 or 3 jazz artists of all time. I'd much rather sample artists who I'm less familiar with or whose work is underrepresented in my collection, even if their work is technically "inferior" to Duke, Mingus, Monk, etc. - and really, how could it not be? I'm really in an exploratory phase at the moment, listening to lots of new (and not so new) artists, and I wouldn't be able to sample them if my funds were perpetually tied up in "completing" my Ellington or Miles collections.

I was gonna post the exact same thing but thought it might make me seem too geeky.

FWIW....an audio archive of a recent Smalls gig

Cool! The streaming doesn't work for me here at the office, but I'll give this a listen later at home. -
I suppose that this will now lead to another drink with the President.

So far, out of about 40 discs ordered, I've received all but 1, a Joe Locke CD. The last few have come one at a time, making about 7 or 8 shipments total - glad I'm not paying shipping! Some of the complaints in this thread seem a bit ridiculous to me. You can't complain about sawcuts when it's been clear from the start that what they're selling are cutouts. And very possibly the cuts are being done not at Oldies but at the Concord warehouse. Otherwise I'm very pleased with the deals - and many of the discs I purchased I don't think I've ever even seen at retail.

Any board members were at the orignal Woodstock?
RDK replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have a friend, in his 40s, who remembers being at Woodstock as a child. He'd been telling everybody this story for years, but one day mentioned it to his parents, who informed him that no, they didn't take him to the concert but to the movie a couple of years later! -
Would you buy this for your daughter or granddaughter ?
RDK replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No, I think you're right; this is the best approach. I know if I try to make this a seperate post the software will combine it, so I'll just say that the rest of this is not in response to Dan, but to everyone on the thread: Seriously, I think what the issue here is that you people have serious issues with breastfeeding. If the doll made these noises with a bottle, I doubt it would bother you at all. It's this conditioning we have in our culture that somehow breasts are for sex rather than nurturing children that is the problem. Hopefully, Rachel, seeline, Maren, etc., will step in here and tell me I'm full of shit so I can just STFU... I don't think any "offensiveness" has anything to do with breast-feeding per se but with the idea of "sexualizing" young girls by giving them fake breasts in the first place (even if they aren't breasts but only fake nipples). At least that's how I responded to it as someone who likes breasts, condones breast-feeding, and has two young girls at home. -
Well of course I don't know what happened. I'm just reporting on statements that Vitous - one of the participants who would presumably know first hand - has said.

Yes, thanks for the heads-up! Interplay is on its way!

I couldn't find this anywhere on-line or else I'd link to it, but this was in the All About Jazz "newspaper" edition of July 2009 (at least as published in the Los Angeles area; don't know how widely available it is). It's a brief Q&A of Miroslav Vitous by Ollie Bivins and it contained quite a few statements by Vitous that I found quite shocking. I'm not that huge a Weather Report fan so maybe this is all old news by now, but among his choicer comments: Vitous claims that WR was initially his idea, proposed to Wayne Shorter, but after Wayne brought in Joe Zawinul they decided to "sell out" and go "towards the money," causing Vitous to quit - and now Vitous claims that Wayne and Joe "completely dismiss" his role in the creation of WR. Even more shockingly, Vitous claims that shortly after he quit, Wayne's wife "broke into my apartment and she took all the documents of my ownership of Weather Report," thereby screwing him out of any interest in the band. He also talks about Zawinul being "an incredible manipulator" who, though a great arranger, couldn't play that well and so manipulated others to make his own playing appear better. There's a lot more, with much sounding like sour grapes, and Vitous often comes close to sounding like paranoid nut. If anyone's interested I'll try to scan the interview, but I ain't typing it all up. Still, I found the claim about Wayne's wife stealing Vitous' legal documents both shocking and questionable. Anybody else read this and/or know more about it?

Was getting caught up on this thread and was just about to post about this. I've a friend who recently bought a collection of Hip-Pocket Records and a player that he found at the swap meet. More info here... http://cultureandcommunication.org/deadmed..._Pocket_Records The general site itself fits into the discussion here as well - "Dead Media Archve" - http://cultureandcommunication.org/deadmed...x.php/Main_Page

If you think that's sick you should see the Delivery Room Playset. -
Geez, these discs are now coming to me one at a time. Glad I got free shipping!

profound Buddy Collette discovery of this week
RDK replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
Oh, I had so wanted to go, Valerie, but I had family in town. He's such a wonderful man; met him a few years ago at the Autry. yes, Buddy definitely seemed to be enjoying himself. he conducted the band from his wheelchair in the audience close to the stage. he was mobbed with well-wishers, gifts, cards, flowers, balloons, big birthday cake, etc. so many of his family members were there: his "kids," grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Buddy's mind is still sharp as a tack and he can still talk his ass off as well! lots of very valuable information in his head and he loves to share it. Wow, was it a public event? Sorry I missed it. I did go to some of the World Stage Jazz Festival yesterday but left too early from that. But it didn't seem like it was part of that. I believe it was at Catalina's. -
Is it just me, or should Stevie Wonder be pissed?
RDK replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Miscellaneous Music
"I wish?" Yeah, kinda. -
So, no one else would have you either, huh?
