Congrats, Cary!!!! Congrats, Cary!!!!

Indeed! I still buy some CDs and LPs for the tried-and-true, but I'm getting more pleasure these days from the (relatively inexpensive) discoveries I'm finding at emusic and (especially now) Amiestreet. I've never listened to so many young artists or so much indie-label music in my life!

My apologies, liarhydrant, for being a bit bitchy in my earlier post. We kinda went through this a while back with the Fantasy/Concord catalog, which is also in the process of being physically "deleted." I think we all have to face the fact that CDs are on their way out, so in that way pretty much all jazz catalogs are or will soon be deleted, at least in their physical form. Unfortunate, yes, but no more so than when LPs were deleted from catalogs and replaced with CDs. I'm not saying it's better - I still buy scores of CDs and LPs - but in some ways I think it will make the more obscure albums (even entire labels) more accessible in the long run. I think we need a new term, though, since I think many (if not all) of these titles won't actually be "deleted" just distributed in a different format than what we've been used to.

Happy Birthday, Lon! Hope you get well soon!

"For all eternity?" hyperbole much? And here I was just complaining to a friend the other day how Mingus Ah Um was oop fr a while when I first discovered Mingus back around 1980.

I'm one of those (rare?) souls who usually prefers Monk covers played on anything but a piano. For that, I'd go to the original. Heard a few clips of Broom's Monk album and dug what I heard; still waiting to pick up the disk.

Randi's had that offer (or something similar) going for years - so far no takers. It's really hilarious to read the audiophiles' reasons for why they won't take Randi up on his challenge.

Just got two packages today: more (but still not all) of my first order and partial shipment of my second order. Looks like we may get all of these discs after all; just may take a little while.
-
If you're basing this on their website's order status, well, that's what we all thought too... Good luck though!
-
It's very confusing. When I originally placed my order, it said that everything would be sent in two shipments - I presumed from different locations. Now there's no indication on the website that the order was split - but it also has my entire order shipped. I wonder if we'll all be getting split shipments or if their inventory process is just f'd up. My second order (not the rest of the first order) was apparently sent out today.

Just received my first order: 12 of the 22 ordered. All sawcut (not surprised as these are cutouts/deletions) but no porn.

Oldies.com sucks.....ordered from them before......they seem to get their thrills putting hole punches and cut-out marks all the time in their stuff.....that's probably why everybody's orders are taking so long cause they have to spend all that time punching holes in barcodes instead of shipping out stuff. ......I got hole punches in stuff that I payed full price for a couple of years ago. OJC CDS even at 4.98 are not an instant money maker at that price so I don't know what the hell their thinking about. Why anybody on this board wastes their time ordering from these PORN PEDDLERS is beyond me......I got my goods last month in the REAL concord blowout sale. And yes I don't like cut out marks or hole punches or any other marks that effect any portion of the product. It detracts from the future collectiblity of the product and is uncalled for when selling to individual collectors. It's not the retailers who put holes and cutout marks in jewel cases, that's done by the record companies. (edit) Just noticed Chuck's post above about this Oldies.com is a record company.......it's called collectables records. I ordered from them once and it was there products that had hole punches in them. Talked to them over the phone about it.....they're a sleazy ass company. There so afraid somebody is gonna make 50 cents on their product. And by the way I'm not exaggerating when I say PORN PEDDLERS cause I stilll get their sale paper that's about the size of a sunday newspaper and.....well I guess that's neither here nor there, but I hate that damned company with a passion and their mutilated products.

I realize he retired over 25 years ago - 1982 I think I heard - but I have such fond, strong memories of him from my youth that it often seems as if he was always there. I'll never forget his coverage of the space program among other things. RIP
-
Hmm. My order of July 6th (about 25 discs) has shipped per Oldies.com order status and all appear in the invoice but I haven't yet checked my cc statement. Are you sure they just haven't split the order, charging each separately upon shipment?
-
Obviously not. They're still alive.
-
Hah! Heard back from them within hours: "Hello. Your order has been Canceled." Now I can buy more from Oldies.
-
I just sent an email to Concord asking to cancel my order of three weeks ago. Haven't heard one word of confirmation, it's still listed on the site as "in process," and most of what I wanted I can get from the Oldies sale for even less. Quite frustrating!

How many of you here have gotten use to MP3s?
RDK replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
With any decently encoded mp3 you shouldn't be hearing any swishing sounds. Those are artifacts of old encoders and/or inadequate bitrates. On a great system, yes, you may hear a slight difference but only if you really strain to listen for it. I listen to mp3s all the time through my system - and have compared mp3 from the discs they were ripped from - and I can rarely hear any sonic deficiencies. Try again. -
I'm working from home tomorrow morning to avoid the traffic. I drive past Forest Lawn on my way from work and already tonight there were dozens of news trucks and hundreds of people gathering just to... wait.

chewy is learning a lot from steve hofmann fourms
RDK replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Audio Talk
There's some good info to be found at SHTV, but tons of bullshit as well, Target CDs being one of them. It looks like Chewy's drunk the kool-aid - which doesn't surprise me. -
Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
RDK replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I certainly don't count my years on emusic a "waste." It was an amazing ride while it lasted and still may be a bargain for some people and for specific albums. But because of how I specifically used it as one of several music resources it will no longer be a priority even if I remain as a subscriber at the base level. Case in point: while the 8-12 d/l minimum makes a lot of mp3 albums now cost about $3.20-4.80, I just purchased a bunch of OJCs at the Oldies sale for $5 each. No way are mp3s a bargain at that price point. -
Happy Birthday, Jack!
