Great! I'll start a discussion threads) later today. Links are still available for anyone who wants to participate.

I agree as well. I was very disappointed. I actually worked on this a bit when the project was set up at Universal (before it went to Paramount and ultimately to Warners, in between which it almost came back to Uni) and the last draft that I read was quite good - better, imo, than what ended up on screen. Zack was indeed much too slavish to the book, which is a fine objective - to a point - but not when it gets in the way of telling the story as a film. I also think it would have been better - and ultimately more profitable - with a PG-13 rather than an R-rating. Rather than add to the edginess of the material, I found much of the violence to be gratuitous.

Now that's interesting!

Which could be said about just about any thread here...

I'm not sure what you're "pre-conceived expectations" might be re: Watchmen, but unless you've read the book I can almost guarantee they'd be wrong.
-
I'll let you know in a few hours. Reviews have been quite mixed. I know fans of the book who loved it; others who hated it; some who haven't read it simply didn't understand much of it.

Dan, while you might not dig the Don Cherry stuff, I think you'd really like something like "Transit." It's a terrific trio album that's very accessible. Welcome Karl!

I don't feel too bad as I haven't even heard of too many of these cats! Still, can't believe I missed the Larry Young track - I have it, but didn't even really care for it in this context. Would really like to check out some more of a few of these discs, especially 2, 5, and 9. Thanks again, Nate!

Personally, I couldn't stand his style of delivery. But still, RIP. Perhaps my favorite Paul Harvey moment was when he was announcing George C. Scott's passing. It went something like "General Patton is dead. Today, the man who played him on film, George C. Scott, joins him." No, they don't make 'em like Paul Harvey anymore. Good... day, Sir.

Van Morrison Revisits "Astral Weeks"
RDK replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Just more pretentiousness from the jazz cognoscenti. Personally I'll take Morrison's oeuvre over Baker's any day. -
No, only good artists this time, Dan.

I meant to post this earlier in the week but unexpectedly got very busy at work. The tracks have been selected and sequenced - I just need to format for uploading and should be able to supply a link by Monday. Not sure if we'll go quite that soon though since I figured we'd wait until Nate posted his answers for #62. I was hoping to keep this one download only since my burner's a bit wonky at the moment, but I can burn a few discs if necessary. The "discs" wil be mp3 sourced anyway, so there won't be any sound quality advantage to a physical disc. I had originally planned for a single disc worth of music, but a theme started to develop that caused me to split it into two parts... and of course I then just had to fill the discs (well, not quite). But the tracks are a bit longer than average, so I think there are "only" about 19 or 20 tracks altogether. These are always a lot of fun to put together, and I think I realized a few things about my personal tastes while doing so. So drop me a PM or simply post here (or better yet, both) and I'll get the download link to you in a few days. Thanks!

Well, he was in town over the past few days... didya get to have that sammich with him? (I'm embarrassed to say I didn't catch any of his sets at the Bakery... too much $$$ for me these days... and I've heard his jokes before... "Najee"... "Con-fusion"! -- Still, I love Papa Lou!) Cheers, Shane Yeah, but no, I missed him this time. Caught him once before. Someone's there on Sunday that I wanted to see, but I've got a crazy busy weekend.

this Bruce Lundvall BLUE NOTE survey....
RDK replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Needless to say, not enough people purchase the "good" stuff let alone would want the "leftovers." Hopefully we might get some of these in some future digital-only reissue program. As for mono mixes, there are few discrete mono mixes and I believe most of those have already been released. After 1959 (or whenever) any monos were merely folded-in stereo recordings. -
You shoulda told her he was Norah Jones' father!

Van Morrison Revisits "Astral Weeks"
RDK replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Jim is absolutely correct: it was not a hit record at first. -
I'd rather have a sammich with Lou Donaldson.

No, it's for real- my survey was in my email. I tried to create a link but wasn't able, maybe someone else can. Yeah, it was in my e-mail too, but every time I tried to click it crashed Outlook. I used the link someone posted above.

11 minute unedited version of The Beatles Revolution
RDK replied to dave9199's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Downloaded but won't be able to listen until later. Thanks! -
Listened to the long bonus track again and simply don't know what to make of it. There are parts that I find really interesting, but other sections sound really dull to me. I've only skimmed this thread - trying to avoid discussion of the bonus tracks - but I believe Brotzmann caught my eye and I could believe that this is him. I'm not much of a fan, but again I'm of a mixed mind: I find much of his blowing here more listenable than most of the Brotzmann I've heard in the past - but I'm also reminded why I don't care for himin the first place. In general, this is the sort of outside music that I enjoy much more in person than on record. There's something about the spontaneity and improvising of this type of music that I enjoy far more as a performance than as a recording. Does that make sense?
