If you don't mind digital, it's available on emusic.

Yes, indeed. "Blue John" was my first, ear-opening exposure to Braith and it remains a favorite. That 2-disc Braith Conn is wonderful as well.
-
Are these actual CDs? Or legal downloads? Legal downloads.
-
PM sent. Download's fine for me. Thanks!

For those looking, these self-released Braith albums (the ones on CD Baby) are also available on Aime Street (and FREE for now).

No, you're not the only one by any means. There's a chance, of course, that the same mastering will later be used for an SACD release (they keep promising...). I suppose if the tapes really are that improved it might result in another BN CD job down the line - but the way the biz is going these days I wouldn't count on it. The sad fact is, unless the market for these changes, I think they almost have to go the 4-side 45 rpm route, call them "collectible," and make these distinctive enough to sell (again) by targeting the audiophile/LP market. Soon enough, I'm sure, needle drops will be making the rounds on the blogosphere.

I'll start...

We should at least change the thread title!

I'm sure this will upset the usual suspects, but for what it's worth... From Joe Harley, originally posted at SHTV.tv http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=169082

musicians you usually like better on OTHER people's dates...
RDK replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Hell, I'm gonna get shit for this one, but... Ornette Coleman. I love many of his compositions but often prefer his music as played by others, such as Old & New Dreams. Not exactly the question, I know, so how 'bout his playing on Jackie McLean's "New & Old Gospel?" I actually prefer his trumpet playing on the title track to much of his sax playing on his own dates. He also has a few tracks on a Geri Allen disc that I like. That's not to say that I dislike all of OC's albums. I think his trio as documented on the live Golden Circle sides is brilliant. Also like "Soapsuds" and the other duets he did with Haden - who I consider a co-leader here. -
That sense of humor is not on display on the recordings I cited . The Zoo ( Pearlie's Swine on the Buddah recording ) excepted , the rest of his vocalizing is anything but humorous . A poor singing voice can be forgiven if the aim is jocularity and whimsy , but on those early 70's records both Kuhn and his lyrics are off-puttingly earnest : " Parts of me just ache and cry I know that feeling just because this moment of my lifetime has become the hardest thing I've had to face as the walls all around my life , all around the years , very special years fall apart Time to run away as far away as worlds of empty colors show the sadness in my longing for so much , so many things I'll never know , not now Time to go as fast as all the years went by me waiting for tomorrow's sun to tell me why... " Yeah, I just downloaded his self-titled Budha album from '72 (with McFarland), gave it a listen, and it's not very good.

Try this... http://downloads.fastatmosphere.com/Mercha...egory_Code=FRIS Great idea - I hope it catches on - but I'm concerned about the price point. $13.99 for FLAC files? Hell, I rarely pay $13 for a real CD these days. MP3s are a bit cheaper, but still more than itunes (or emusic) and without the middle man.

I always fell asleep while listening to Brotzmann's Nipples. I'd set it up to repeat on the CD player and my ex would come home to find it blaring out with me passed out on the couch. I once fell asleep dreaming of Brotzmann's nipples... but that's another story.

Who said these were mastered rom vinyl? But yeah, there's no point releasing new vinyl ripped from old.
-
I don't mind alternate takes added to a disc (preferably at the end), but I rarely find them essential and won't buy another copy of something I already own just to get them. Previously unreleased material (new tunes left off an album due to length) is another thing entirely.

More "interesting" than "good" - but very interesting. R.I.P. Bettie

To me the fact it's from a musician like Satriani makes it even more believable. It's not like they would have much of a chance getting sliding it by if was Van Halen or Bruce Springsteen. But an instrumental tune from an 80s dude like him? Hell yes it is possible they lifted it. I think he has a solid case and I think Rachel is right. This will be settled with cash to Satriani and then swept under the carpet. Oh I'm sure it will be settled. The songs are way too similar for Satriani to not win in court. That said, I really doubt that Coldplay intentionally "stole" the tune. On one of their earlier songs, in fact (or so I read), they actually credited another writer whose tune they used part of.

Hmmm. I'm not really a fan - though I love the "Viva La Vida" single - but I've never gotten any kind of a megalomia vibe from them. In fact they all seem like decent guys - at least for rock stars.
-
I didn't like it, but it's chalking up the award noms...

I agree. I think he needs to choose more interesting/adventurous collaborators. I think, like so many, he's merely mellowed with age. I'm not sure he wants to be as edgy/fiery as he was in the past.

"Beyond the Missouri Sky" is sublime - one of my favorite recordings by either Haden or Metheny. I'm a bit less fond of his Naim recordings overall. They sound lovely - beautifully recorded - but I find the music a bit too sterile for my tastes. The live set doesn't suffer, obviously, and is very nice indeed.

On CD, yeah. But just like when LPs went away (mostly) they'll be some other way to distribute the "software."
