    BFT 63?

I just realized earlier today that I'm up next and was about to post about it. I can be ready, but if Dan's good-to-go then I have no problem switching with him.
  3. There's a "new" Walt Dickerson as well - "Tell Us Only Beautiful Things" - that's pretty terrific and only two tracks to boot!
  4. Big rec from me for the Specialty Story. One of my all-time favorite boxes! Also the Jumpin' Like Mad comp that Lon already mentioned.
  5. Why do you think it won't ever be reissued? From your thread title, I expected some proclaimation directly from Shorter or Cuscuna.
  6. Go see these guys if you can - they're great!
  7. I agree. In addition, while the interweb's such an anonymous place at times, I always try (though I don't always succeed) to abide by the rule of not saying anything to anyone on-line that I wouldn't say to them in person.
  8. Don't know if it's still the case since I haven't bought anything from Newbury in quite a while (after buying dozens upon dozens during their 1 cent CD Ebay auctions) but since they had multiple copies they often sent me Second Chance Offers whenever I lost an auction. It got to the point when I could pretty well guess what their SCO cutoff point was, so I would often purposely "lose" the high bid only to get a chance to purchase the same item for an even lower price. I think I got that Booker T box for around $8 plus shipping.
  9. Had some trouble getting the tracks in the right order - where some numbered incorrectly? (This may have been answered, but I'm avoiding reading anything here.) Anyway, here are some quick comments I wanted to post before leaving the office. Will try to elaborate more later, but I really suck at identifying players. I really dug this BFT because much of this stuff is a bit out of my “comfort zone” but I nevertheless found most of it very listenable and interesting. I'm very curious to know some of the players. Many thanks Nate! 1. This is a pleasant track, of course, but I find the rest of the disc so “exciting and new” that it makes this seem almost dull in comparison. 2. Love the bass opening on this one – very spacey and atmospheric, though maybe not so “musical.” Contrasts nicely with the horns playing over it. And I love how it builds. Great example (to me) of inside-outside playing (though perhaps a bit more outside in this case). 3. Nice, cooler jazz. The guitar (and lack of piano) helps keep this interesting, 4. Not really caring for this one. Like the drumming more than anything else. Okay, I’m liking the second half of this one more, once the groove kicks in around the 7-8 minutes mark. 5. Lovely! Strings/cello (?) are just atonal enough to not make this sound at all sappy. Is this Kenny Wheeler on trumpet? I really like this one and would love to hear more. 6. Very familiar-sounding guitar-organ tune. Groovy. I’d guess the guitarist is the leader of the session. 7. Solo guitar. Elliot Sharp? Andrew Cheshire? Goes on a bit too long with not enough variety for me. 8. Now here’s some variety! Limehouse Blues? Bari sax? Mulligan? Classic “West Coast” sound. 9. Drums & elec. Guitar. “Noisy,” but with enough rhythm that I can relate and dig it. Damn, this one builds to greatness! 10. Not sure how “jazzy” this is, but as contemporary classical I kind of like it. Very interesting and not as discordant as one might expect from this instrumentation. 11. Nice bop tune; lots of energy; great solos. 12. Not my favorite track here, but not bad either. Parts of this I like more than others.

    CD-Rs

No doubt that T-Ys are superior, but I haven't had any problems with any brand of CD-R I've bought ever since an early unbranded batch I bought at Office Depot about ten years ago. I just use whatever...
  11. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm not sure where it begins or ends. How 'bout glasses/contact lenses that allow a player to see better than he otherwise? Or technical improvements in gear that gives one an advantage over players from earlier eras? Throughout the history of the sport we seem to both condemn and condone certain questionable practices, such as spitballing - often praising the results no matter how they were attained. I think it's dangerous to too harshly condemn players for using steroids when they weren't specifically outlawed by MLB. Moving forward - with drug testing - yes, but retroactively I think we need to give these players a pass... along with Gammons' asterisk.
  12. So no pot of gold... but a station wagon?
  13. I hope this doesn't become a habit. If they send me sets "by mistake" and my conscience gets the best of me... I'd go broke!

    Rare Blue Notes

Lawrance Marable's Tenorman I only ever saw once - when I picked it up in Dan's sale. I then promptly lost/misplaced it.
  15. That's an interesting article. Thanks for linking. There is much that I agree with. However, it seems that his whole argument as to why power numbers are up hangs on this.... Could it be that the reason why there are fewer positive test results for steroids be due to better masking techniques rather than a decline in usage?? Or maybe the steroid abusers have switched to HGH? As of the end of last season there was no test that could detect HGH reliably but that could be changing. And how do we know Pujols isn't on that 104 list? I've always thought he looked like a juicer. I think a player would be incredibly stupid to still be taking steroids now. It was one thing back in 2003, when testing was only beginning - and anonymously at that - but once results are made public it could end one's career.
  16. It goes even beyond the audience, I have a friend who saw him do a solo concert at Oberlin many years ago and after intermission he had the piano tuner come out, he wasn't happy with the tuning, bitched the guy out and started to tune the piano himself. Someone from the audience yelled "sounds good to me asshole" where Jarrett said "only at Oberlin" and walked off. Despite how much I love his talent I have yet to see him live as it always seemed like a high risk or high reward type of proposition. Yeah, I'm seeing Jarrett's trio next month for the first time though I've been a fan for over 25 years. Partly for those reasons.
  17. Well nobody, not even me, ever said that Sun Ra wasn't occassionally full of shit either.
  18. Well nobody, not even me, ever said that Keith wasn't occassionally full of shit.
  19. Not ready to comment yet, Nate, but I did download both and listened to them for the first time today (which puts me weeks ahead of my usual schedule!). Very interesting!
  20. Sorry, can't help, but nothing to be ashamed/amused at. I've got many old & oop Mosaics that I've picked up (often dirt cheap) sans boxes. I may have a xerox copy of the booklet if that helps, but I know the quality's not that good.
  21. So Miles beat up women, Art did smack, and Keith is a pretentious twat - doesn't stop me from enjoying their music. Beyond that, I've lost all interest in commenting in this thread.
  22. You two should get a room.
  23. And so it quickly turns into another Jarrett bashing thread...
  24. Martin's been doing his best work in smaller, cameo roles these days. He was very funny in "Baby Momma" last year or on his bit on "30 Rock." And if that's the Mraz song I was reading about recently, he actually left it off his album a few years ago because he didn't think it was any good. But then he started performing in in concert and the demand grew (first in Europe I believe), and he was finally compelled to release it. And now it's up for a Grammy. So add this to the list of things to blame the French for.
  25. How's the book/notes with this set? I've got most of the discs from emusic, but even so it's quite tempting at that price.
