  1. Easy. They're all plants!
  2. It's hard. I mean, I like Joshua Redman, but once people (mostly people more knowledgable about such things than me) pile on and bash someone like Josh, it's difficult to answer back intelligently. As for the others you mention, while I might recognize the names I can't say I'm familiar with their music. The "problem" in discussing newer, more contemporary artists is that, well, they simply haven't been around long enough for many of us to know them. That said, I've followed up on a few recommendations from here that have turned me onto some terrific artists/albums that I would never otherwise have heard of, two of them being Sam Keevers and Malcolm Braff.
  3. I picture that as Hal Jordan's turntable...
  4. It has nothing to do with SUVs per se - it's having huge, gas-guzzling cars when you don't need one. What do you propose for a family of 5 or more? SUVs are very practical and even efficient in some circumstances - such as mine at the moment. I currently have a family of six to deal with (the in-laws have moved in) and it now takes us two cars to get anywhere together. We currently have a Forester (just barely an SUV in any case) and are looking for something bigger. I just hate this "all SUVs are evil" argument that gets tossed around. They're very practical for some - just not for my idiot brother-in-law who lives alone and drives a Hummer.
  5. Everything's been mere speculation so far; still no official word as far as I know.
  6. I'm curious what the religious fundamentalists will think about this. On the one hand, it's Man playing God. On the other, it's reuniting humans and dinosaurs... just like God intended 5000 years ago.
  7. These are the BS/SN discs I grabbed in the last two days... Billy Harper – Black Saint Mal Waldron – Git-Go, Crowd Scene, Update, Where Are You? Old & New Dreams – O&ND, Tribute to Blackwell Chico Freeman – No Time Left, Up & Down George Russell – Essence, Electronic Sonata (both 1968 & 1980 ‘cause I got confused) George Lewis – Homage to Charlie Parker Dewey Redman – Living on the Edge Roscoe Mitchell – 3x4 Eye String Trio of NY – First String Andrew Hill – Strange Serenade, Shades Walt Dickerson – Life Rays Jameel Moondoc – Nostalgia in Times Square Max Roach – Live at Vielharmonie, Survivors Bobby Bradford – Lost in L.A. Richard Muhal Abrams – Family Talk All-Star Session – Remembering the Moment The samples are most helpful as I'm in more of an "inside/outside" rather than a more adventurous mood at the moment.
  8. Same here, I never heard it but I have been looking for it for some time. I have 7 dl's left for the month, where next with the BS/SN? There are a few 2-3 track albums in the bunch.
  9. Exactly. I'm not sure what people are expecting. RS is, primarily, a rock & roll magazine.
  10. I already had it on LP, but Billy Harper's "Black Saint" just had to be my first d/l.
  11. I think the only thing more predictable than Rolling Stone (or ____ ) publishing a list of the Top 100 (or Top ___ ) is someone not agreeing with it and complaining about it.
  12. Earmarking a percentage of the proceeds to charity is an old gimmick. If it really benefits a worthy organization, it is usually by default. So now even giving money to charity isn't enough? Haven't seen the ads nor do I know the billionaire couple of whom Valerie speaks, but all that's irrelevant anyhow. It may be tasteless to some, but there's nothing illegal, immoral, or unethical about making a buck selling something to an eager public.
  13. Congrats, guys! Still looking forward to catching the band live one of these days.
  14. Perhaps a better title would be "The Essence of Miles."
  15. Yeah, Trane should have been practicing instead of dying.
  16. Kind of Blue? Never heard of it. Is it some kind of jazz music album????
  17. Jazz isn't very popular. A surprisingly correct answer even if said in jest. It's easy to find common ground in The Beatles - everybody knows them. Its harder to find such commonality in discussing most jazz artists/albums. I think we're all tired of discussing Kind of Blue, and if we start into the various sound quality/stereo-vs.-mono/CD-vs.-LP issues Chuck will eventually yell at somebody for overusing the master tapes. The other reason, of course, is that even if there are a few jazz artists who were just as wildly influential as The Beatles were in their own way... well, relatively few people care.
  18. Okay. This once-promising thread has gone downhill. It's starting to read like the Hoffman forum now...
  19. These guys have all bought into the rhetoric of a bunch of lonely male masturbators living in their parents' basements. You mean "teenagers?"
  20. More than just rumors I'd say. Cam Jazz has announced that they've picked up BS/SN for digital distibution, saying that they'll be turning up on itunes, emusic, Amazon, and other places soon.
  21. Their first couple of albums, yes, I'd agree, but I usually prefer the stereo mixes. In any case, "stereo being an afterthought" - if it was at all - only goes through the White Album. I'm not sure if there even was a mono issue of Abbey Road or Let it Be - if there were, they were fold-downs of the stereo mix.
  22. And just when I thought that Aric couldn't say anything more to surprise us...
  23. One needn't listen on computer speakers. I find emusic's mp3s more than acceptable for the cost. And in the case of BS/SN discs, I can barely find/buy them at any price.
