  1. Have really been digging the Braff/Oester/Rohrer albums that have shown up on emusic and Braff's Yele is one of my favorite emusic downloads ever. But this is a label that I'm otherwise unfamiliar with and most of the European artists are unknown to me as well. So any recommendations on where to go next? The Strayhornmonk sounds tempting...
  2. You should drop Adam a line. He does docs.
  3. I believe it's in direct response to the gold-foiled chocolate "medals" given out four years ago in Athens. A lot of athletes were disappointed over that one, especially those from warmer climes!
  4. Metheny always put on a great show. Lots of people knock him for his more commercial endeavors, but he's been a favorite of mine since I first heard "As Falls Wichita..." almost 30 years ago. By all accounts (includng yours) he's a great guy too.
  5. Interesting. Hoffman implies that he just found this tape yesterday (or the day prior to the thread over there at any rate), so I wonder if it's the same "master" they're talking about - or how long Ron's had it "on his workstation." Yes, it is the same master. Ron just got it yesterday. He said that someone definitely replaced the box and reels, most likely because the old ones wore out, but it's the one Steve Hoffman is talking about. His CD mastering notes are in the box and he knows this tape well. He also said that if there was a 6 month search for a Blue Note master, he would have been called into it right away because he has his hands on them all the time. I imagine his mastering workstation would be one of the first places they'd look if a master got misplaced. BTW, he pulled the tape to prepare an upcoming LP release. I asked him for some details of this new LP release and I hope to hear back so I can let you guys know. Kevin EDIT: For the record, I am not saying that Steve Hoffman is lying, just that he appears to have not used the right people at Blue Note to find the master. The impression I got from Cuscuna and McMaster was that they knew exactly where this tape was. Ron said that he got the right tape with one request. They don't know if someone messed with Hoffman or why he got the run-around, but they assured me that the tape was never "lost" on their end. Good info, Kevin. Now I dare you to post this over at SHTV!

  7. More like this!
  8. Great news for Sidewinder fans! From Steve Hoffman... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=158851
  9. I have both US and UK mono Peppers. They have the same mix but are mastered differently. US has a little more compression and more of the mid-rangey sound. The UK is less compressed and has more highs. I like them both. Thanks for that info. That'll keep me from spending much on a mono Pepper if I ever run across one. Just download the damn thing and give it a listen. They ain't ever gonna re-release the mono version.

Honestly, with the ECMs, there's not much to go with the "physical" part - just the artwork. No liner notes or anything that can't be easily found on places like AMG.
  11. Click on the Live link on the Pullen website and there's a mouthwatering listing of unreleased Mingus concert recordings with Pullen. Unreleased maybe, but not all unavailable.

Apparently not available in the U.S. (yet?).
  13. Is it time to call Dr. Phil?
  14. I am working on new remastered individual cds of the material in the box. I box edition was "limited", not the music. Good to hear! Why would you imply the music would not be available in the future? I don't understand where your "understanding" came from. Just that you've said the box is sold out (oop) and being limited, I assumed the box would not be repressed. Hadn't heard that you were planning individual releases. Nothing sinister intended; my misunderstanding obviously.

I don't think Conference of the Birds is OOP or unavailable. Oh stop one-upping me with the facts!

Indeed. Why not release Lookout Farm while they're at it, or Drum Ode or (a personal fave) Elm, or Conference of the Birds?
  18. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I want nothing to do with a club that would have me as a member, no matter how much fun it sounds.
  19. Amazing how someone will do something illegal, and when they're caught, will try and make it seem as if someone else has done something wrong. Whatever happened to accepting responsibility for one's actions? That became outmoded thinking under the Bush Administration. No accountability became the national moral standard, with robbing, stealing and cheating becoming the ideal. Oh please! Can we stop blaming Bush for all crimes since the Dawn of Man? Bootlegging, pirating, and yes, even no accountability has been going on for decades, if not centuries and millenia. All such hyperbole does is ruin one's credibilty.
  20. I have much less problem with someone posting this for free on a blog than with Saturn charging someone for what is essentially a pirated product. In part, the set is oop - Chuck has no more copies and from what I understand no intention of producing more - but I'd also prefer to think that at least the bloggers are sharing it for the love of the music rather than, like Saturn, to make a buck off of someone else's work. I understand that this could cut into potential future sales - but "potential" is the key word here. I doubt if even a tenth of those (250 was it?) who downloaded this for free would ever actually buy the product even if it was available. Meanwhile, 250 people are exposed to the music. Small consolation to Chuck, I know, and the only advise I can offer aside from printing more (which doesn't sound feasible) is to make this set available on iTunes or emusic - or for Chuck to sell a limited number of CDRs; copies on demand is another way to tackle the issue.
  21. If I understand the argument, you're saying that a physical object (a CD) has to be involved for an improper transfer (theft) of the music to occur? And if I do understand this correctly, how does the argument address the inevitability (we're told) of the demise of the CD, when there is no physical object anymore? (Or, in the case of music that is today sold only in digital format? ... The Dave Douglas Live at the Jazz Standard comes to mind.) It's a complicated problem, so I'm not getting evangelical on the issue or anything. Just probing. Probe away, because right now, I don't think that anybody really knows anything. I will say, though, that on my own "scale" that blogging of long OOP material is far less a crime than selling CDRs of copywritten material. And that there's plenty - infinite amounts, probably - of "in between" in between. Case in point: http://the78rpmblog.blogspot.com/ Does anybody really have a beef with this type shit? I doubt it. Now, the question becomes this - when does "our" shit become this shit? And that's an evolution in progress (is there any other type of evolution, btw?), and frankly, I don't know. Time alone will be the decider on that one. But i will say this -when I come across blogged LP rips of Shirley Scott Cadet sides that are, like, 35 years old (and probably almost that much OOP), things I've never once seen "real" copies of, albums that have never been reissued, and probably never will be reissued, I feel like I have been presented with a shared gift, whereas if I come across a blogged version of that Dave Douglas thing you mention (& I haven't, I don't go looking for that type thing), I feel like I did when some crackhead offered me a half pack of cigarettes that they had just lifted out of somebody's coat pocket. I refuse to live in a world where there is no distinction whatsoever made between these two scenarios. Could not agree more!
  22. Couldn't they find a more suitable song to play than Whole Lotta Love (or whatever Zep song that was; I've already forgotten)? Yeah, that embodies both Britain and the Olympics spirit. Was Peter Gabriel busy? Not necessarily British, but I told my wife that the one thing it lacked was strippers swinging from that bus.
  23. Wow. After seeing the Closing Ceremony, I'm thinkin' that maybe China should rule the world. And if that's a taste of what to expect from London...
  24. Sorry to hear this, Alexander. Can't offer any practical help other than that mentioned above; just my support and sympathy. At least it sounds like the acrimony is at a minimum.
