I think this popped up on Dime a few months back. If any of you guys aren't on dimeadozen.org, you don't know the gems you've been missing.

Not that anyone's specifically bashed emusic, but a few people have admitted to not having downloaded anything (or very little) and one senses that they're arguing more from the heart than the head. If anyone hasn't tried emusic, do yourself a favor and do so. I believe they still have a "25 free tracks" offer with no further obligation. It can't be a simpler process and some of you might be surprised at how easy it is and how good the mp3 tracks sound.
-
Generally agree re: the .99 pricing structure, but OJCs have been readily availably now on emusc for only about .25/track (and even "less" in the unlimited days). I also find emusic preferable for being DRM-free mp3.

I think it's that sticky plastic security tape that some people crave...

Just thought of one: Imus has the perfect face for radio...

Just got back from seeing this myself. Overall, I liked Planet Terror much more than QT's film, which I thought a boring ass POS (agree about Ms. Poitier though). Both films were too long, though, and collectively the whole experience made my ass hurt. Who woulda thought that both of them (QT especially) would be so self-indulgent with such purposely grindhouse-y material? Great concept to do a grindhouse double bill, but I wish the whole thing was executed a bit better (and briefer).

That, and keeping EVERYTHING they own, and EVERYTHING they've EVER released "in print" FOREVER!!! From the article... Infinite choices, eh? So when are they gonna put out the box of complete Freddie McCoy Prestige recordings? Or the two Paul Bryant LPs issued on Fantasy? Or the two Johnny Lytle Milestones? Or The three David Newman disco LPs on Prestige? Infinite choices! Pah!!!!! How do you make the letters big? OK - imagine these letters are big, if you wouldn't mind. PAH!!!! PHOOEY!!!! TOSH!!!! PISH!!!! MG I take it, then, that you're a "glass is half empty" kind of guy?

The "funniest" moment amid all this bullshit was when the Rutger's coach complained that Imus' words were already hurting her recruitment efforts for the b-ball team. Oh how I wish Dave Chappel's show was still on so that he could murder this shit...

What's wrong with digging Meldhau as well as others? Since when is it an either/or deal? -
Huh? How is free speech affected? The man was fired because his sponsors bailed, not directly because of what he said. And even if it was directly because of what he said, that's something his boss is free to do as well. I believe your thesis needs a little work... 100% correct, Moose. Thanks for saying that. so you guys ought to get down on your knees and thank the corporations for their willingness to take a stand against racsim and sexism. You put a smiley there, but you have a valid point. Larry Elder (among others) argues that a corporation that's racist, sexist, or otherwise bigoted in its operations is "bad for business." If you refuse to hire (for example) blacks, you're closing yourself off to potentially valuable employees; if you alienate and fail to service minorities, you're limiting your customer base. If you have even the appearance of being bigoted, you'll drive away potential costumers who will no longer give you money. The actions by CBS and NBC prove this in the Imus case. If advertisers no longer want to be associated with a known (or even just perceived) racist/sexist, then the network will lose money. And if it's bad for the networks to be associated with someone like Imus... then off he goes.

That word, a priori. I do not think it means what you think it means. um, yes it does. Wikipedia is your friend, but you're taking its philosophical definition out of context from how it's used in other applications. As in: yeah, okay, nobody is going to legally prohibit me from saying something, but if I say it I'm going to get in so much trouble that I'd better not say it after all. The result is the same: one is prevented from saying something out of fear of repercusion and reprisal.

And even if it was directly because of what he said, that's something his boss is free to do as well. I believe your thesis needs a little work... 100% correct, Moose. Thanks for saying that. Of course CBS and MSNBC have every right to fire Imus, and loss of sponsorship is a pretty damn good reason. But while perhaps not a free speech issue per se, it is censorship, if only a priori. I fully support CBS' right to fire Imus, but I don't like the fact that they were arm-twisted by Sharpton's drummed-up outrage, which pretty much says "you can say what you want to about most things but say anything that i find offensive and disagree with and we're gonna make you suffer."
-
Indeed. Savage was the most offensive guy I ever heard on the airwaves. Was glad to find that the local station just replaced him with Dennis Miller, who's at least funny. (Didn't even know that Dennis had a radio show...)

A frightening precedent, though, if you'd care to include any left-leaning talk show hosts... Does the same rule apply if they "cross the line" as well? I'd hate to see public discourse (not Free Speach!) stiffled out of fear. Show me a left wing comment as vile as Limbaugh's recent characterization of Michael J. Fox. So you're one of those "free speech so long as i agree with it" types, huh?
-
And whatever happened to "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words can never hurt me?" Wish more people were as sensible as me mum.

Yes, because we all know that a rush to judgment based on incomplete information is somehow the same kind of thing as a pointless and completely unprovoked racial slur. "Wah wah wah, Don Imus said some mean things about black people. But Jesse Jackson said some mean things about white people! I can't tell the difference." I could argue that calling it "incomplete information" is really downplaying the crime, but I won't. As for your comment equating the two, no I don't think they're in the same league. I think the "rush to judgement" was much worse and far more destructive to all the individuals involved. Not saying that Imus' slur wasn't terribly wrong , but I don't equate a few hurt feelings with the near-total destruction of three men's lives. (Would you still dismiss the importance of the "rush to judgement" if the players went to trial and were found guilty - in a reverse-O.J. - due to the racial component of the case?)
-
I agree. Never really listened to Imus and haven't liked what little I've heard of him, but he was made a scapegoat for a much bigger issue, imo, by Sharpton and Jackson.
-
Very sad loss - he's one of those guys you wish could live forever (and in a way he most certainly will). Haven't read much Vonnegut lately, but I read much of his work back in my college days and he was inspiring; one of my favorites. He also gets big props from me for entitling one of his shorter pieces, "The Big Space Fuck."

Too bad. It's highly entertaining.

Well, to be fair to both Sanjaya and Hailey (who both did okay this week) - what are they gonna do? For weeks now, Simon and the others have been slamming them, either implying or outright saying that they're outmatched and don't have the skills to win the competition. I agree - Melinda, Lakisha, and Jordin are much better singers - but that doesn't mean that Sanjaya and Hailey are simply gonna quit. They obviously have their fans - for whatever reasons - and are playing to their strengths. Every year there's a Sanjaya or a Hailey to spark some life in what could easily be a boring competition... especially if everyone has already declared Melinda the winner. My prediction: a Jordin-Blake final, with Jordin for the win.
