  1. For better or worse, technology has changed the way musicians play and think. Otis's generation was probably among the last that had any experience doing things live in the studio, because there was no other choice. When overdubbing, punching in, and alternating between takes came into vogue, there was no looking back. Once humans experience a luxury, they consider it a necessity.
  2. Probably, but like Dark Side of the Moon, Kind of Blue has remained a consistently strong weekly seller through several decades. If I'm not mistaken, it is on average the best selling back-catalog jazz title. As you know, it has also attained mythic status outside of jazz circles since at least the early 1990s if not earlier. Wikipedia, FWIW, reports that the RIAA certified it as selling quadruple platinum in 2008.
  3. I mean, who doesn't know where Brooklyn is?
  4. For those of you who heard "Kind of Blue" when it was originally released: Could any of you have guessed what a massive seller (by jazz measures) and hugely influential album it would become over the decades to come? What was your reaction to the album at the time, relative to previous Miles albums or albums by contemporaneous artists?
  5. This great Capitol LP starts out with purports to be musicians playing on acid. This album is an absolute gem.
  6. I did not mean to imply this in my recent post. I was told, though, that the vinyl resurgence among youngish hipsters has further boosted business, as has been the case at a number of B&M stores I frequent. Correct me if I'm mistaken.
  7. Thanks! Looking forward to my next trip to Beantown!
  8. Can we get a moderator to change the thread title?
  9. Brother Cleve reports that Stereo Jack's is doing better than ever, now that bearded 20-somethings are paying $10 for Simon and Garfunkel and other records that used to be in the dollar bin!
  10. One thing if it's BYOB - I've been to plenty of venues like that.. It's another entirely if they don't permit drinks in the space. Funny that jazz is taking this approach while innovative "classical" programming is trying to tear down the wall of stuffiness by permitting drinking at concerts. At any rate, it's good to know which spaces to avoid when I'm in town.
  11. Even stranger that they don't serve drinks.
  12. Well of course, but you could also flip that statement and say that you can never read an article about Miles without it mentioning all of major, major artists that got their starts in his combos over the years. That is certainly an essential aspect of Miles' oeuvre that has propelled him to such legendary stature. For what it's worth, I have never thought of Herbie or any of those guys simply as Miles' sidemen, and I really haven't at all gotten that impression over the years. I realize that your experience may be different.
  13. Seriously? I've never gotten that impression over the decades, either from print or conversations.
  14. I love the idea that anyone would even entertain "selling out" as a remotely valid concept in 2014.
  15. I'm talking about the LP label. black cover with four individual color photos of the group members?
  16. What is the Small Faces Third? Is that their UK self-titled album on Immediate?
  17. Couldn't believe what they were saying about Pete on AM talk radio after he died. Or maybe I could believe it, given the source.
  18. Music offered this back then, but it is virtually worthless now. EDIT: I was trying to quote and respond to a couple of different posts in my reply, but messed it up due to sleep deprivation and being distracted by the state of the union address.
  19. If so, this speaks to the flexibility and functionality of music, which is a good thing in my opinion. I love art on its own terms, but I also embrace the concept of functional art. That is why I have Eames chairs and a Saarinen pedestal table in my kitchen. While the leftist/singalong thing may be perceived as creepy or corny by some - including me, admittedly - I would love to live in a world in which music offered a form of cultural currency with some value. Music offered this back then, but it is virtually worthless now.
  20. Does anyone have the Swedish Modern Jazz album on RCA Camden (US) from the late 50s or early 60s? Really nice cover art. I have to spin this record again.
  21. Listening to the "In a Silent Way" box set recently, I wondered about the following: If Teo had edited the sessions into a double LP, and it was released as such with trippy cover art like Bitches Brew, do you think "In a Silent Way" would have made the mark that Bitches Brew made?
