  1. I prefer Beatles tunes when covered by aging jazz or EZ artists trying to get hip to today's sounds.
  2. Allen, not sure how relevant any of this stuff would be to your project, but it's probably worth poking around on, if you haven't already: http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/index.php
  3. The Amy Camus story was made up as a joke by a couple of musicians who were on bill with her. It became and urban myth, and was entirely debunked decades ago. The psych record "Miracles" is better than you may expect.
  4. Yes, what a voice. Her Capitol album "Mambo," with arrangements by Billy May, may be the wildest mambo record ever made. "Voice of the Xtabay," with arrangements by The Great Les Baxter, is her greatest. For many years, it held the record for the longest continually in-print album. She signed my copy when I met her in 2005. One of the greatest and most original voices of the 20th Century.

  6. MG, do you have his Caribbean Suite album on RCA?
  7. chewy, did you ever get Satan in High Heels, the greatest album ever made?
  8. It must be gratifying for him to know that he made the greatest album ever recorded, which is even better in that it was the soundtrack for a film featuring Grayson Hall who played Dr. Julia Hoffman on Dark Shadows.
  9. Milton Nascimento - Courage - A&M/CTI (audiophile pressing)
  10. The Liberian Suite has Jim Flora cover art, so I'm biased.
  11. Last Night: Robert Cobert - Dark Shadows OST (Philips stereo) With Barnabas and Quentin on select tracks.
  12. Halloween Music Today (a day late). Starting with: Buddy Morrow - Poe for Moderns - RCA Living Stereo with the Skip Jacks on two tracks.
  13. I prefer getting the news online - Pacifica, Salon, Slate, Truthdig, and Propublica, for starters. Still, seeking out the news online is an active experience. Large, bold headlines in papers that everyone sees, whether they want to or not, is a form of passive news transmission. This shared experience is being lost now, for better or for worse.
  14. That's an excellent question. As popular culture has fragmented into increasing numbers of subcultures, people who are into specific genres seem to have less time and patience for the bloviaters of yore. These types of magazines seem to be based on the old model. Also, with message boards and online reviews, people can get an idea real quickly about where they want to explore.
  15. Ahmad Jamal LPs are always beat to hell when I find them in thrift stores.
  16. That's pretty sobering when a city like Los Angeles cuts back on its jazz coverage.
  17. Thanks Porcy! NP: The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones - Mercury (mono) Ever noticed how 1950s Mercury pressings have a distinct armoa, not unlike acetate discs?
  18. Philly Joe - Blues for Dracula - Riverside (OJC reissue, mono)
  19. Any idea if this was a fold-down, or was there a specific mono mix for this one?
  20. Welcome back MG! You were missed!
  21. Bud Shank - Brazil Brazil Brazil - World Pacific (stereo) Jack Marshall - 18th Century Jazz - Capitol (mono) The Yardbirds - Roger the Engineer - EMI Columbia (stereo)
  22. Why don't you take this up this issue with the moderators, who created a thread category called "Offering and Looking for?"
