Those Everest LPs had some great stuff on them. And The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever, a.k.a. Jazz at Massey Hall.

Maybe with spectral audio technology they could bring out the bass more in the original recording. Actually, there are a ton of great jazz performances that could benefit from this, though I imagine this will be done by listeners who have the technology. I doubt that record labels would invest in this kind of thing.

I have a real soft spot for albums like these. Imagine being able to walk into a Firestone in 2023 and getting an album like this for free with purchase of a tire.

That's the one I have, purchased in high school. I prefer the bass overdubs. Few things drive me crazier than inaudible bass in any kind of groove-based music.

Elsewhere, I wrote about what I perceive as a scarcity of second-hand Decca LPs. This is an example of deserved scarcity. From the LP Jerry Lewis Sings, here is "Come Rain or Come Shine." This is like an SCTV spoof commercial for a mail-order album.

Did you check out the title tune? That is my favorite on the album. I hear some Mancini in it.

My suggestion was not at all intended in the way you've interpreted it. I was just hoping you would listen to the opening track, especially if you had never encountered the LP or CD.

Never heard of that one! The title track IMO is the best thing on Straight Ahead, but there are a few other gems as well.

At least take 4 minutes out of your life and listen to the title track. I love it.

You need both Basie Straight Ahead and Afrique.

When I was in high school, our stage band played Sammy Nestico's "Basie Straight Ahead" and "Hay Burner," both of which are on the Dot LP Basie Straight Ahead. This may have been Nestico's first major gig after leaving the military. Well, after several decades of never finding that LP for a dollar, I was delighted to see that @felser was selling his CD copy, so I happily bought it from him. I'm picking up on a real Mancini/Private Eye Jazz vibe on several tracks. The title tune in particular quotes riffs from Mancini's "Fluter's Ball" (Experiment in Terror) and "Chime Time" (Mr. Lucky), though, in fairness, those riffs likely predated Mancini. This and Afrique are the only late-period Basie that I own. But I am totally digging Basie Straight Ahead. I also bought from felser On My Way and Shoutin' Again, to complete my Basie/Hefti trilogy (unless you count the Frank Sinatra album, which would make 4). I will talk about that one at some point.

Yeah, I know little about him after his 1950s/early '60s work. It was interesting to hear him in this context.

Listening now. The stereo re-channeling is not bad, as these things go. "Little David's Fugue" is really nice.

Peggy Lee - Lover (Decca, re-channeled stereo) With Gordon Jenkins. A mixed bag.

Anyone familiar with this LP? I have the Verve VSOP reissue, titled Little David's Fugue, which reshuffles the tracks, but appears to include the entire thing. Sadly, my copy is electronically reprocessed stereo. Any thoughts on this album?

The main period that interested me is the four-album run from Another Side (1964) through Blonde on Blonde (1966). He wrote a few amazing songs later, including "Tangled Up in Blue" and "You're a Big Girl Now." That said, I haven't really listened to Dylan in decades.

Not sure if this has been posted before. Color footage from Shelly's Manne Hole in 1970. The bass is much clearer and forward in the mix than you may encounter in live video recordings such as this.
