  1. I was just listening to a Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound Cd (the one with the great timbalero, Endel Dueno on the cover) when I stumbled on this posting. They covered a TR tune, "El Que Se Fue". You're right about TR being mostly known as a ballad singer. His reliance on boleros probably will keep him a from being as revered in non-Latino circles as much as Machito or his archrival, Tito Puente. I like Beny More alot, but he's almost forgotten (Spanish Harlem Orch. did do a nice cover of "Mama Guela" a couple of years back.) Thanks for bringing Tito Rodriguez name up.
  2. The Hungry Brain has had some pretty good after set music as well. http://www.emergingimprovisers.org/events.html
  3. I've was blessed to hear him many times. Until very recently he used to come to Chicago towards the end of April to play at the Jazz Showcase and celebrate his birthday. He'll be missed. R.I.P. Johnny
  4. The last jazz dj at WBEZ in Chicago is to retire: http://apps.wbez.org/blog/ , his last show is this Sunday. WBEZ, for many years had jazz programming on in the evenings (when working people could listen), and at nights. By the time Buckley became the last jazz DJ, the WBEZ jazz programming had evolved into a soulless mix of piano trios, and vocalists. Buckley was the exception, playing what he liked, mostly stuff from the 30's, 40's and 50's.
  5. If you miss the plane/bus/train/boat/taxi, Rich Corpolongo Mon. @ Elastic.
  6. After reading the L. Kart review, did Sandy Mosse record anything or lead any dates while living in Europe? How does this compare with his stuff recorded for Chess/Cadet?
  7. Chicago baritone player Ron Kolber passed away 6/19. Service at Weinstein Funeral Home 111 Skokie Blvd. Wilmette 1pm on 6/23.

    David Binney

He did some really good work with Drew Gress's Jagged Sky group on a Soul Note CD, "Heyday". I also like his work with the quartet Lan Xang, on the Mythology Label.
  9. One of the best bands in this genre, Grupo Folklorico Y Experimental Nuevaorquino was a bunch of Eddie Palmieri sideman who left. They existed for a few years in the late 70's and did two LPs. Grab the one called "Concepts in Unity" if you ever run into it. Members included: Jerry and Andy Gonzalez, Manny Orquendo, Chocolate Armenteros, Oscar Hernandez. The band evolved into Libre. I've got a few Salsa/latin jazz Lps and Cds, but very few can touch this.
  10. One of the better observers of Chicago politics is Ben Joravsky. (His articles on TIFs are scary at times.) He's written about Daley's latest taxing venture and what to expect in the Chicago Reader: http://blogs.chicagoreader.com/politics/
  11. I recall Kalamu was a DJ on WWOZ a while back. It was a good show.
  12. I've been down there quite a bit, having had relatives living in N.O. pre Katrina. The festival is held in a horse racing track, and it really smelled funky after a rain. Jazz certainly isn't the focus of that festival. Some of the food at the festival is quite good (all of it is local-no national chains.). I wished I had been the one to think of the iced tea franchise-low overhead and real long lines on hot days. They used to have interviews with musicians in the grandstand. Audiences were small at these interviews and were allowed to ask questions of the performers too. The grandstand also had lectures, given by scholars about the local culture. Some were quite informative. I recall one given by a linguist, the topic being the linguistic differences between the various N.O. neighborhoods. About a dozen people were in the audience. I was the only one from out of town. The next several times I went down to visit my relatives, I kept finding myself guessing what neighborhood people were from. I hope you hit a few restaurants too .
  13. As I said, Adjemian doesn't seem to be playing too many live dates.... He relocated to New York last summer according to a recent Margasak posting on the Chicago Reader website. The relocation information wasn't very well spread. I recall a conversation about Adjemian's whereabouts in Feb. with Tushar Samant (the person who does the now-is.org calendar and someone who is very knowledgeable about the scene) and he didn't know. We speculated he was involved in one of his rock/hillbilly projects, as he disappeared for long periods of time in the past. New York's gain.

    Nori Tanaka

The now-is.org calendar indicates that Nori Tanaka is returning to Chicago for a short stay. On one of the venues it looks like they"ll be celebrating the Smokeless Heat CD release on Delmark (the Jason Adjemian led group with T. Haldeman etc. ) - Weds at Heaven (located appropriately enough on Milwaukee Av). The cd was pretty good, I suspect that this might be one of the few opportunities to hear this group live.
  15. For at many years, Johnny would come back to his hometown to play for a week at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, where he would celebrate his birthday. 4/24 was Joe Segal's birthday (he owns the Jazz Showcase). Joe Henderson also celebrated his birthday on 4/24. One year schedules and money permitted Joe Segal to book both of them. I sure hope the Showcase opens soon.
  16. I used to frequent the Jazz Showcase when he played there. I was blessed to hear him so often.
  17. Any Eddie Palmieri. I assume you mean Larry Harlow (Andy his brother also did some stuff). I like "Yo Soy Latino" and the "Tribute to Arsenio" . Try the Celia Cruz lp she did with Johnny Pacheco, "Celia and Johnny" One of my favorite groups from that era was called Groupo Folklorico y Experimental. They did a great Lp entitled "Concepts in Unity" (Alot of these guys were with Eddie Palmieri, this band evolved into Libre which is still around)
  18. I think the name of the group Haldeman was in with Mike Reed was called People Places and Things. Had Greg Ward and Jason Roebke too. Their repetoire was based on music from out of 50s and 60s Chicago (Clifford Jordan, Wilbur Campbell etc. tunes). Good band, can't wait to hear them again. Ajemian seems to be in alot of really good bands, like Triage (w/ Rempis) and Dragons 1976 (w/ Aram Shelton). I only heard the first CD by Ajemian's group Who Cares How Long You Sink. The new Delmark has me curious enough to want to purchase their 2nd, "Folk Forms Evaporate Big Sky". Never heard them live. Ajemian, of all the people participating in the Chicago scene seems to be the most willing to take chances (along with Matt Bauder who's relocated to NY). My only complaint about the guy is that he doesn't seem to be playing too many live dates of late, at least in Chicago.
  19. Good riddance. A few years back I witnessed a drive-by shooting involving gangbangers from my front window. They used a handgun. It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. It was summer and there were alot of people on the street. Mr.Heston was president of the NRA at that time.
  20. The recent stuff he did was pretty good too. We have Andy Garcia to thank for those. They're not as good as those 50's descargas he recorded with Tata, Tojo, El Negro, Nino Rivera et al. Those are gems.
  21. McDougal was a friend of mine. I heard him a lot of times. I got to hear him with Jay Peters a couple of times. Jay was a really good player. I can't think of too many recordings Jay's on. I know he's on a Gene Shaw record. On one occasion I remember him at a festival Kahill El Zabar presented. After playing, he became drinking buddies with Frank Wright that night. McDougal worked for the state. He had very bad eyesight and as a result didn't drive. That might have hurt his career a bit. He passed away in the summer of '94. I went to his wake. There weren't alot of people there. I gave a cassette of McDougal's two LPs to Mike Reed (the drummer) couple of weeks back. It would be nice to hear his music live again. Mike has a good vehicle for that in his People, Places and Things band (the band's repetoire is 50's and 60's Chicago Jazz ).
  22. The management impresses me as a bunch of cold or opportunistic creeps. Why did they keep the name? It's something most of us associate with its founder Marguerite Horberg? Wasn't it enough to take her business away? The new location is near the Hungry Brain. I hope the Hothouse doesn't adversely effect my Sunday nights.
  23. Chuck, I know this might make you cringe, but you might consider a condo. The condo market in Chicago is collapsing due to self-inflicted wounds (says Tracey Cross, who does residential real estate market analysis - she's a known name in real estate circles and neighborhood preservationist circles as well). Lots of new condos are empty and unsold where I live in Logan Square/Humboldt Park, including older rehabbed buildings. Just a thought.... Roger
