Career advice for 8th grade girls?
Big Wheel replied to Chrome's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
They may not all make a quarter million, but every story I've heard about girls stripping in Miami starts with "it was an easy way to put herself through college." With tuition through the roof, it sounds like a stripper can pay for 4 years of a $25000/year college with only a couple of years of stripping. -
A little some thing for 'Ali G' fans....
Big Wheel replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This is the video of Ali G speaking at my college commencement. I'm pretty glad I wasn't sitting anywhere near my grandparents for this... -
Are you referring to the Forest Cafe? I think it was under construction for several months last year...haven't checked it out yet as I seem to remember the food was a bit expensive for a student (at least compared to the dirt cheap taquerias around Harvard and Porter Squares--Anna's, Boca Grande, and Felipe's). Will have to check it out sometime. Also, one of my very favorite restaurants, Chez Henri, is about a block and a half down the street.

Spending the occasional Sunday afternoon at Stereo Jack's was one of my favorite pastimes. And since it looks like I'll be moving back to Cambridge, it'll continue to be!

An Asian cookbook I just got as a gift talks about how there are a lot of Westerners who say they hate cilantro but actually really enjoy it in combination with certain other foods (i.e., they hate it in salsa but love it in a Thai salad). So the preference for cilantro seems to be somewhat context-dependent.

Trevor Lawrence?

Hm, I was going to guess Lamont Johnson, as there's a guy by that name who did some R&B work on bass and vocals (dunno if it was a Motown label tho). But that Jackie CD has already been issued...

Did this person play on only one BN album, or were there more?

I didn't realize until recently that cilantro and coriander were the same thing. Used in Asian foods as much as in Mexican. Anyone ever tried culantro? Supposed to be similar to cilantro, but stronger.

Probably not, but get Leapin' and Lopin' anyway. Worst-case scenario, you upgrade and sell the old version on the board to somebody who doesn't like RVG's remastering. You should not go another week without hearing it.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Which trumpeter is it that takes the muted solos on Moanin'? Also, does anyone know whatever happened to the guitar player? His tone seems very much out of the T-Bone Walker school, but it looked like he had some nice jazz chops, too. Also, the Brazilian commercials are a trip. One of them is for export quality wool textiles--not finished clothes, just the fabric and how it was everyone's choice for exporting. Made me wonder if most of the Brazilians who owned TVs in 1963 were rich businessmen who dealt with such things.

Did Ira Sullivan play much alto back in the day?

Marian McPartland?

I listened to a couple of tracks from the first album in a store listening station awhile back. She's certainly a very strong technician, but the album felt waaaayyy overproduced. For now I prefer Eldar Djangorov if I want to listen to a pianist with crazy chops.

For a DVD, the price is right--it's only $12.99 or so in most stores.

What's your local jazz station...
Big Wheel replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Hm...as I'm based in Boston these days I'm not sure exactly who is left there. The morning guy would probably dig it, I think. They have a rotating staff in the afternoons so I'll try and listen in this week and see what their tastes seem to be. They webcast, too, so you guys can check it out too and see who might be best. -
Everything $14 and under was discounted to $10 at Circuit City today, so I picked up: Bjork--Vespertine Blakey--Caravan K2 edition Jill Scott--Beautifully Human. Still haven't started hitting the OJCs and the Dusty Groove Jazz in Paris titles. My signing bonus is going to disappear in no time flat.

Miami's WDNA (www.wdna.org) uses Bob Parlocha over the graveyard shift, but everything else is live and local. I can put you in touch with the folks there (and put in a good word) if you want. They do mostly straight-ahead jazz with a heavy dose of Latin jazz in the early afternoons. I think DJs have a considerable amount of leeway in what they're allowed to play, as a few of them have IMO horrible taste. But it's mostly very good. -
Welcome to the "Jazz Radio" forum!

While we're on the subject of forum upkeep, any chance "miscellaneous music" could be restored to its proper place alphabetically? I guess I'm just anal retentive. -
Jeez, what an asshole that first commenter especially is. He couldn't be more wrong on the facts. First of all, AFAIK there is no such "minority act" in existence. I remember learning back in high school that there was some Supreme Court case that ruled that any organization with more than 10 members had major limits on how it was allowed to disciminate, but that's a pretty far cry from claiming that only "whites only" clubs are illegal. If they were, wouldn't the KKK, Aryan Nations and American Neo-Nazis have been sued out of existence by now? Also, my guess is that 99% of all Italian restaurants (or at least the ones that aren't entirely staffed by a single family) hire cooks of Latin American or maybe Asian origin and couldn't care less about hiring only other Italians. Their labor is likely way too expensive. I'd bet that VERY few sushi restaurants these days go out of their way to hire all Japanese cooks. Many are likely Korean or Chinese; to the extent that the owners are discriminating in favor of East Asians, it's probably mostly because they want someone who "looks the part" to the average gaijin. And before I forget, congratulations, Einat!

HUGE game. The one game all year I go out to see with friends in a bar, and it's this one!! I thought for sure they'd find some way to blow it, even with only 90 seconds on the clock. The Dolphins are so screwy that they'd probably have been worse off having the offense on the field for those 90 seconds.
