  1. Webber is being annihilated by Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Guy
  2. Until I read these obituaries, I'd always assumed that Alexander was British. His novels draw so heavily on Celtic mythology. Guy
  3. I'm not a nutritionist (or even know much about nutrition), but if I had to make an uninformed guess, 90% of the reduction in heart disease risk can be achieved without abandoning meat in your diet. Guy
  4. Charles Lloyd appears on several of his album covers. Paul Motian on Tribute. Jarrett on a bunch of his albums. I'm sure there are others. Guy
  5. Enjoy these low prices while you can. Guy
  6. Assuming AT is Art Taylor, I definitely wouldn't put him in the same class as the other 3. Agreed about Shrieve being a fantastic drummer -- definitely doesn't get his due when discussions of great pop music drummers come up. I've speculated (based on liner notes to one of the 1st 3 Santana albums) that Shrieve introduced Carlos Santana to the music of John Coltrane and Miles Davis, which was an obvious influence on Caravanserai. Guy
  7. Goddamn, that's a lot of great music! Guy
  8. SS1, Have you heard "Brilliant Corners" and "Monk's Music"? I think they are better than the Plays Ellington album. Guy
  9. Aggie, you aren't the only one -- I really wonder about the NBA's scheduling sometimes. Guy
  10. I thought I'd make things interesting by picking this album, Santana's first (and arguably best) foray into jazz rock. I haven't listened to it for a while so I will have to dig out the album. 11. Deron Williams is having a great 4th quarter, but it looks like too little too late. Guy
  12. Here's a review. I'm currently reading this book. Fascinating and recommended. Some funny parts: p. 57 "...the comment made by Darius Miles, a young player for the Portland Trail Blazers, after he heard that a player had been fined $300,000. 'My mother would have to work over a year to make that kind of money,' said Miles." p. 66 "When Nash was named Canada's athlete of the year, D'Antoni said to him, 'That's a great honor, Steve. Did you beat out one of those curling guys who sweep the ice?' " p. 99 "During an agonizing 139-137 triple overtime loss in Denver on January 10, [assistant coach Marc] Iavaroni leapt off the bench to protest a blocking call on Nash that he thought should've been a charge on the Nuggets. Joe Forte, a veteran ref, came over to the bench and said to him, 'First of all, you split your pants. Second, you gotta calm down.' It was true, Iavaroni was trying to get by with a pair of suit pants that had a small rip in the crotch." Guy
  13. I haven't heard Prezens, but I do have the album he did w/Tony Levin and Bill Bruford about a decade ago (Upper Extremities). Torn can definitely play. Guy
  14. He was on some fantastic albums -- Jackie's Let Freedom Ring, McCoy's Expansions, Booby's Stick Up -- and his bass playing was always an integral part of the ensemble. Herbie, you'll be missed. Guy
  15. I agree with the Detroit pick but I think SA will do it in 6. Guy
  16. The conventional wisdom is that he didn't start playing "Milestones" live until Tony Williams joined the group.
  17. None of the people voting "yes" has even attempted to address this point by Dan. Would any care to try it? Guy
  18. I don't think Dallas would be a better team with Nash still around. Nash has been a better player with Phoenix than he ever was with Dallas, and I think that has a lot to do with the system Mike D'Antoni has set up. I also wonder if Nash could function in the slower-paced, defensive-minded system that Avery Johnson has brought into Dallas. Guy
  19. While in general I agree with Shawn's point, let's not forget that some of the best tunes on the Wall are composed by Waters alone and that one of the worst ("Young Lust") was co-written by Gilmour. Guy
  20. This was a FANTASTIC gig, one of the best I've seen in a long time. J Larsen made the comparison to Miles's electric groups, and I think that's spot on, except with a tuba replacing Michael Henderson and two cellos (one with occasional wah wah and electronics) replacing Cosey and Lucas. As usual, Henry T's alto playing was very intense. Liberty Ellman (who played amplied acoustic guitar), Dana Leong (the wah wah cellist, who doubled on trombone for one tune), and the drummer were also great. They're playing at the Jazz Gallery on Sunday night as well, so those of you who live in the NYC should definitely check them out. Guy
  21. From tradesports: Pistons-Cavs: Pistons 72.5% Utah-Spurs: Spurs 79.1% Championship: Spurs 54.8% Pistons 29.2% Jazz 8.7% Cavaliers 7.9%
  22. Chewy -- the only rock version I was aware of was Stevie Ray Vaughn's (though I don't think I've heard it). Who covered it in the 60s? Great tune! Guy
