I'm trying to pay more attention to Monk's playing these days, and was wondering what your favorite Monk playing/improvisations are? Individual tracks, not albums. (We all know his compositions are great.) For starters, how about the version of "The Man I Love" from Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants where Monk starts out his solo by playing the melody at half-time (relative to the rhythm section), stops in the middle, and then after a nudge from Miles, he finishes with an incredibly inspired run of ideas. I'm looking forward to listening to your recommendations. Guy ps Bonus: If there are any tracks that you feel feature unusually inspired comping by Monk, include them as well!

But we get long stretches where the heat index exceeds 105 F, and we still have summer (less brutal but still summer) in October. Brace yourself. Uggh. I take it the humidity is pretty nasty? I guess the tradeoff is "cold winter" vs "nasty summer". Fortunately, unlike Connecticut, I imagine every place is air-conditioned. Guy

Very nice album. I think I like it better than The Bridge -- Hawk plays great, Sonny has a nice a-g edge to his playing, and Paul Bley adds that special something. Guy

Let's not forget that Monk's work as a sideman for Keepnews was his career breakthrough. Guy

Shouldn't the musicians matter more than Keepnews? Though he may have been important as a facilitator for the careers of Monk, Bill Evans, Cannonball, and Wes Montgomery, I've never been particularly impressed with his "insights" as a liner note writer. Guy

Bibby to the Cavs could be an upgrade. J Kidd is still a formidable player but I'm not sure how many years he has left in the tank. Guy
