  1. I wonder if that was the stage Mark Fisher designed. That cat has come up with some really mind-boggling designs over the years. The Stones mammoth Steel Wheels stage is a favorite of mine. And that thing barely fit in a football stadium!
  2. Fair enough. HP has always been a standup cat in my book. Sorry to hear things went sideways. Your description makes me think of all those grandiose stages and visually spectacular tours groups like The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd lugged around the globe. Would I have preferred seeing them in a club and forego all of that? Hell no!
  3. What did I miss?
  4. It said in the article the kid was in Junior High School. So probably in the 12-14 years old range. And that Hino grabbed him by the hair, and slapped his face twice. So no, not acceptable. At all. The End.
  5. Yeah, I definitely understand that. If it were, it'd be built into every speaker. Thanks for all the excellent info, though. This has turned out to be a rather enlightening discussion!
  6. So there's no way to build a flat cutoff rather than speed bumps? Almost seems counter-intuitive, IMO. If you're going to create hurdles that alter the signal, why not just shut the whole thing down at the first sign of trouble? I don't think anyone would prefer an altered audio signal to no signal at all. Am I missing something? (no pun intended, BTW)
  7. I wonder why it didn't become commonplace. ? Too expensive to justify, perhaps?
  8. Amazing! I had absolutely no idea! I had a pair of Fishers many moons ago. They were my first "serious" speaker. Can't recall the model, but they were cheap, and seemingly weighed 2lbs a piece. Think I got the pair for $120.
  9. A good friend of mine saw them in Cleveland Sunday night (IIRC), and said they were fantastic. Jealous of both of you!
  10. Interesting. I've never heard of any speaker that had an emergency shutdown mechanism built into it. How did you reset them?
  11. You mean it made your amp shut down?
  12. Oooooo... I'd like to hear those! Still absolutely LOVE my Excites. Dynaudio knows their stuff. Have you seen some of their really high end models? If they sound even a quarter as good as they look, they must be phenomenal. They have some serious cabinet designers in their studio.
  13. I've never heard Wharfdale's, but they are very highly thought of in the audio community. So that's very surprising to hear.
  14. Fuck that! Glad they're on the case, Larry. Still incredibly strange. Which model?
  15. The problem being the only way to blow a tweeter is by overloading the voice coil, which would have to be done by cranking the tone control/EQ to limits it cannot handle. Is there any other way? Because Larry stated earlier he's only used factory settings.
  16. In fairness, cables don't really degrade over time. If you get the same results, and I'm betting that you do, you should really get your money back, IMO. And I'm with Lon. This is the most bizarre problem I've ever heard of.
  17. Ah, I didn't realize that. I certainly meant no offense.
  18. Kevin, with your background as an EE, do you agree with sidewinder's assertion of ten years being the median cutoff for electrolytic capacitors? I have no reason to doubt it, but wonder what your opinion is. And in fairness, which I'm thinking you'll agree, literature surrounding electronics, especially audio equipment, can sometimes be a little...um..."enhanced for effect".
  19. Ah, that makes perfect sense. Guess I just got lucky previously. Kind of similar to car batteries, I suppose. Most only last about five years, yet my last one lasted for seven. And it was actually OEM, surprisingly. *sigh* Well, at least I have some time to save up my money...
  20. Is it? That's awful. I had a Pioneer VSX for 12 years, and a Harmon Kardon AVR for 14 years. Both in heavy rotation with no issues. I wonder if it has to do with how much more computerized everything is now? All is well with my current amp and preamp of three years. I was hoping they'd be my last. Perhaps I better adjust my expectations...
  21. Incredibly underrated, IMO. The gun fight towards the end is one of the most realistic and gripping gunfights ever filmed. I love how they went without music for it. Really kind of brought you into the middle of it. I wish they'd release a proper Blu-ray version. Even though the DVD version looks almost as stunning as Blu-ray.
  22. Reminds me of the VSX and Elite series from Pioneer.
  23. DACs continually improve, Larry. So if you're running digital in, you may notice a little improvement. But if you're running analog in, you may not notice any difference, to be honest. You already have an outstanding unit there. And by mid-level I was simply speaking to the price point. It wasn't meant to downplay what you have. My apologies for not being more careful in my wording.
  24. Good stuff, Kevin. I was hoping you'd pop in. This is more in your wheelhouse than mine.
