What a hoot! And I had no idea Konitz was like that. Thanks!

The thread title is not gender-specific. Title of the thread says one thing and tranemonk's first post says another. Take your pick, I guess - and most people did just that. Oopsie, my apologies to Mr. Teagarden. I guess Anita can make my list now.

Happy birthday dude!

Double hammy...yeow! But most glad you're in good spirits!

I'm treating this as favorites I'm most likely to listen to now rather than some kind of hall of fame. If that's not what you want I'll delete it. Jack Teagarden Billie Holiday Mildred Bailey I don't know if there's much difference in my mind for 3 through 7 or so, so on another day (or hour) Anita makes the list easily. As could Louis.

I figured as much given the smiling Buffy avatar you had for awhile. I had this strange urge to flirt with you when you were using it.

I'm not much of a Marvel kid (though I did like the 1st Iron Man) but as Whedon fanboy I'm going to have to check it out. I'm more eagerly awaiting Cabin In The Woods (which I don't know if it's regular "film" or filed here).

Unfortunately in Eugene Mr. Berne got squeezed by a traveling company of Beauty & The Beast the night he played and Benny Golson is in town tonight. Talking to the nearest person in the front row (there were 3 of us - the small crowd was spread out all over the place like they were afraid of bird flu) he noted he knew a few people who could only choose one (because of baby sitting and such) and they chose Benny "because he's 80." I'm not sure but I think Late was on far end of the front row just judging by the intelligent way this person was speaking about Jackie McLean & Woody Shaw. Just a guess mind you, maybe I'm underestimating this town. (Pardon my eavesdropping, but it's not like there was the din of the crowd to drown you out. Not that you were loud, my dog ear hearing kicked in when I heard "Jackie.") I hope this band continues to be able to record on whatever label they desire and tour. It just all fits together so well. Just to single out one member Ches Smith creates such a diverse assortment of sounds with his assorted percussion in addition to vibes and "regular" drumming. He did this thing with handle end a mallet on (I guess) the metal rim of his drumhead that on its own I wouldn't imagine as a sound that would be something one would seek out, but wow, it brought it all home. Ugh, I'll stop now before I use more cliches as I can't write about music worth a damn, but Seattle & Portland area board members make an effort to see them tonight & tomorrow respectively. And head's up Europe, they touch down in London on March 14 and the continent on the 16th. Tour dates here (music will play if you're at work not working.)

The Sex Pistols sign new record deal with Universal
Quincy replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This. Not when they played Tokyo. I like both, but I don't buy into the above math. PiL did have cooler packaging though. -
Shhhh, my live-in partner hasn't a clue.

The Sex Pistols sign new record deal with Universal
Quincy replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I loved the Sex Pistols, actually no past tense about it. I had the good luck of traveling to the UK when they were beginning and again at the end, and they along with The Jam were the highlights of cultural musical exchanges with cousins that stuck with me for life. I ended up trading for live tapes & demos in the early '80s and along the way have added a few on CDR over the past decade. Oh, and I have Dallas & SF '78 on VHS. So yeah, I'm a fan, although as their life was so short it's not like I wade in their music for long stretches. This won't be available in the US though international shopping is so easy nowadays. I stuck w/ LPs of Bollocks and Swindle and another junk release and have a manic spin of some of that about once a year, or I dip into one of the live shows. I'm not really sure what this deluxe can have on it that hasn't already been released, though if they do a good job a "rounding up" I might be tempted. Maybe...I kind of doubt it though. I just want to make sure it isn't brickwalled. There used to be some very good youtube videos of Cook demonstrating his guitar licks. They were promos for instructional DVDs he was selling and my old "Favorites" links no longer work. But he was both very funny in them and his playing was rippin'. -
It's such a miserable day in Eugene today the visiting musician has taken to responding to jazz board criticism. I love this album - it just keeps getting played. The frequency of wanting to play it almost reminds me of getting a great album purchased with chore money as a teen, where that was it for a few weeks and you immersed yourself in it. Looking forward to tonight!

Lennon, McCartney former homes to be preserved
Quincy replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
George lived in one house for 6 years and then moved. So which is more important? Maybe the busstop is? Ringo doesn't remember the inside of his childhood home. He spent quite awhile in the hospital as a kid so maybe that's a place the fan seeks out instead. If you map the homes George & Ringo are not as close together as John & Paul's homes are. And I don't know, after you've seen 2 of these types of houses do you need a 3rd & a 4th, and another 90 minutes or whatever of driving around? I'd rather visit George's place in Hawaii myself. I used to have an aunt who lived in Liverpool. In the early '70s of course none of this was considered tourist material. By the late '70s they started to have an inkling that maybe some people might have a little interest, probably due to street sign theft. -
"Umbrella" sounds so much better than "line". Hmm, I think I used umbrella there just because it's winter in Oregon. (I don't use one though.) But yeah, an umbrella is harder to snort.

If it were Coke sodas I have yet to have one this year. But Coke has a massive umbrella of products. They bought Honest Tea awhile back and I have 1-2 of those a week.

Quincy replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was in Eugene's Rogue brewpub tonight and they have a beer out in Voodoo Donut pink bottle called Bacon Maple Ale. I don't know, maybe we've taken this bacon thing too far. -
does it still make sense to buy cds?
Quincy replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Though it does take up space I do find that "good ole" CDs make for a pretty good storage medium since I don't live where square footage is terribly expensive. The one area where I could see myself spending time to rip a few hundred discs to lossless would be for things like most Mosaic sets where you can more easily reconstruct original album, and collections from before the LP era and sets with alternates. It's a little easier dealing with a laptop to make playlists so the listening experience is less academic. I've done a little bit of MP3 ripping of Mosaics and had fun finding the original LP covers for the iPod, but I just don't listen to music on a pod much. -
Wow!, I feel 6 years younger! Welcome back!

Happy birthday!

does it still make sense to buy cds?

"Because I'm in my '40s, I, of course, have a CD collection--around 150 discs..." -
I still haven't seen it again since seeing it in the theater, but I thought it did the best job of any movie I've ever seen as to what the end of civilization would look like that didn't involve asteroids, spaceships, or monsters.

Boy he caught a lot of games as a youngster with the Expos. One year he caught 152! I remember him before the perm and playing as much outfield as catching. The '81 strike year Expos were so close to making it to the big show, and you can't blame Gary for them not getting there. R.I.P.
