  1. Not to compare the great game of baseball to tennis, but that reminded of overcoming match points in Wimbledon. Same deal as others, I still vividly recall Game 6 of '75 (and I own the '75 World Series DVD set and watched it all again a couple of years ago) and there have been other crazy games not mentioned on the list Brad provided, such as the shootout between the '93 Phils & Blue Jays, the entire '95 ALDS between the M's & Yankees, Mazerowski too, but what you went through with your deep investment this year - oh god, well I can imagine but shit...(Yeah, I'm an eloquent guy.) I didn't fall asleep until until 1 (the benefits of Pacific time ) and got up before sunrise. It's just such an electric feeling that I wasn't sure baseball was still capable of giving me. It's kind of nice to know that that part of me isn't dead yet. As far as the ratings nonsense I have a feeling they'll do quite nicely tonight. The Indians-Marlins series didn't do well in the ratings until it got near the end. Man! Neither one of these teams has guys who quit, so while surely there's no way tonight's game can approach last night's I don't think either team can feel their lead is safe. And for the Rangers, finding a right fielder who doesn't play the ball like it's live ammunition. I haven't read to confirm but I almost think he pulled his groin when going for the triple. Isn't there a bit of an oblique problem as well? I know the last or 2nd to last HR he hit in the ALCS he was grimacing and touching it (the oblique, not the groin.)
  2. You silly, they'd be jennies, not jackasses.
  3. What colinmce said works for me. Pre-odered because it's Coleman Hawkins.
  4. If the Yankees or Red Sox were in it game 2 would still be going on. I was too young to fully appreciate the beauty of Grich-Belanger-Brooks in the infield, but Kinsler-Elvis-Beltre will do just fine! Surely some maker of leather goods could have whipped an tie-in ad. Maybe a lil' leather case for gout & boner meds.
  5. I tend to believe in it more within a game than across games in series, although even within games momentum can swing (irony always drips, momentum always swings) to such a degree that I'm more a believer in everything you say in paragraph 2 above. It's still hard to shake "uh oh, momentum" as last night when Craig was out on what was later revealed to be the Pujols directed hit & run I said right there, "That's it, the Rangers will be World Champions." It was based on the assumption that 1) they'd then IBB Pujols and 2) that he might not come to bat again in the 9th. But then of all things the Cards got the next guy & the next on base so it looked much more likely that Albert would come around in the 9th. I sure as hell didn't envision a double play at bat for him in the 9th however. And what a relief it was that it was phone & crowd loudness that explained the pitcher coming in for an IBB. With a manager who tends to burn through relievers I truly thought his Genius circuits had been fried by the earlier happenings. Also kudos for the Cardinal bullpen coach for not blaming Arlington phone technology as blaming phones has happened in other situations in past years. He even directly said something like "their phones are as good as any other." Score one for the boisterous fans!
  6. Boy was I wrong! I thought for sure they'd try to slip in a Vince show in the mix.* Just in case some here don't read other music boards or bothered to look at the splash screen at Dead.net, here's a list of the dates of shows for the next 2 or 3 years of Dave's Picks. (Or I guess that's the timeline. I wouldn't think they'd combine shows that are a month apart or more.) 6/10/73 6/30/73 9/11/73 5/19/74 6/23/74 7/31/74 9/28/75 6/14/76 10/3/76 5/26/77 11/4/77 1/22/78 Oh, and the first one will be 5/25/77. I know we have a lot of Pig fans here but I'm impressed by the eras they're mining in the new series. I'm holding out some hope that as Fall '72 was ignored perhaps that'll be another box of some kind. Waterbury or Texas please. I'm going to have to review some of these shows I already have that I haven't played in ages to see whether I jump aboard. It's good to see to 2 of Oregon's finest get represented with 1/22/78 and 5/19/74. *Or maybe not. And now a few hours after the above post I visited dead.net intending to sign up. Only now dates from outside the above range, including something from Jan. 1970, the '80s, '90s dates are popping up. So it seems that the usual wide net for these kind of releases is being cast. Btw, the above list of dates was all that displaying yesterday.
  7. Momentum in sports is highly overrated, at least in terms of one game to the next. Remember when Pujols launched that rocket off of Lidge vs. the Astros. Almost every sportswriter came out said "No way the Astros can overcome that!" but of course they did. Hey, if Washington & the pitching coach decide to text who they want up in the bullpen, they'll be one up on The Genius. Sheeeeeeeeeeeessh!
  8. A Frippertronics tour is available from DGM. That link takes you to the news of the release, from there you can find the FLAC or MP3 if you want. It's 10 shows from July 27 to August 7, 1981 in NY, NY (Washington Square Church & Inroads.)
  9. That was some gut check. That kid may not be able to grow much of mustache, but he sure came through in epic fashion. What a curve! I hope it leaks out what Washington was saying when he went out to get Derek Holland. And tonight Wash is the genius, as The Genius's move to bring Boggs in...oof! I loved how McCarver says "he need to keep the ball down" just as the pitch goes up, and Napoli hits a video game shot.
  10. The new series will be called Dave's Picks after Mr. Lemieux. That's fair considering he did the work for most of the Dick's series and most of the stuff afterwards. Or was it all of it? A key part of the blurb: "Dave's Picks will combine the best aspects of the Dick's Picks and Road Trips series, by presenting shows selected from the finest master tapes in the vault, mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, and always including period photos and informative liner notes. Here's a new wrinkle: The four 2012 releases (the first should be out around February 1) will be available in a limited, numbered, edition of just 12,000 COPIES. That's still a few months away, but if you SUBSCRIBE TODAY, you can guarantee that you'll receive all four sets, plus a special subscribers-only BONUS DISC (to be sent out with the 2nd release), and we'll throw in FREE domestic standard shipping & handling to sweeten the deal! What's more, we're offering an early bird subscription rate of $95.50 through December 15, 2011. This constitues a savings of over $30 as compared to purchasing the volumes a la carte. " Sorry guys, I didn't sign up for the last subscription as I knew there'd be at least one release that was of no interest. So I'm pretty sure I'll risk it and just pay $30 if there's something I have to have.
  11. Thanks, you saved me a post. Oops, I'm here anyway. This sort of thing has been overcome in basketball too. It's just a loss, ugly as hell but it counts the same as the nail biter in Game 1. The news today (maybe it's old news in Texas) is Hamilton may have a sports hernia. He's earning major toughness points if that's the case, as if playing with a groin pull wasn't bad enough. (Hey, if you have some energy you need to work off between innings, and better yet have a partner...) No disrespect whatsoever to Mr. Hamilton, but I think the Rangers can overcome his ability to contribute being reduced better than an injury to Elvis or Ian. Not that you want any of this mind you.
  12. I hear that one hit he off of Lidge in Houston is still in orbit. And now tonight. You could just feel #3 was going to happen off of the lefty Oliver. I think the man has made a huge impression everywhere in Texas where baseball is played. I had to miss the middle explosive part of the game as a relative who I see much less of than the Cardinals in the World Series visited town. I was happily surprised there was still baseball going when I picked it up in the 7th. Also shocked at the score and happenings. Sounds odd to say "if you had to miss a game" when there were 3 HRs, but of the first 3 games if you had to miss one this was the one as far as I'm concerned.
  13. It's been a number of years since I followed a team all the way through a season (as in seeing or hearing just about every game) and they didn't get as far as your guys (for me the last time was the record setting Mariners. I also did it with a few '80s Cubs teams as WGN made that possible.) And that's the kicker. Texas could win 3 and yet despite becoming World Series champions, I do believe you'd be a more than little bit sad that it's all over. Can't they go on and play the Japan champion, or Cuba, anybody?
  14. Happy birthday Matthew, wherever you are!
  15. If you ever need to burn a little restless energy between innings pretend to be a second baseman receiving the tosses from SS when turning double plays. (You don't necessarily need a Nerf ball and a partner though that can add to the fun. ) The SS has the advantage on turning them as they are usually in a more comfortable forward momentum crossing the bag type of motion on the 4-6-3. They are also in a better position to leap over the sliding runner. Whereas on a 6-4-3 often the second baseman will almost (or no "almost") have his back turned on the incoming runner and many times the throw has to be made without the feet being planted, or even if they are planted the angle isn't as friendly. And many times the worst injuries happen because the feet are planted! The more awkward throwing angles aren't as big of a deal when you're young but it can add up over time to shoulder problems, which in turn adversely effects the hitting. So be nice to your hard-working second baseman. Let them slump a little a longer and resist the urge to boo, as it's hard position to field well and have the health & energy to hit too. Guys like Pedroia, Cano, Utley and Kinsler deserve a lot of respect. We're in something of a golden age of fine second baseman. Their productivity tends to dip sooner which means a shorter career for many (as Utley may be a victim of the wear & tear.) I wonder if Willie Randolph ever had nightmares about Hal McRae? I would think he would! Shucks, youtube doesn't seem to have the famous playoff upending encounter but the unrelated to the topic of second baseman video below makes good use of James Brown, so what the hell.
  16. As you said on the previous page. I get that, it was a barrier for me too for a spell all those years ago. Eventually the guitar, sound the of band together and wit won out, to the point where I liked the over-the-top vocals.
  17. Joe Posnanski had an interesting (and short for him) article on DH or no DH in the World Series. The real head scratcher was that NL teams score more runs without the DH than with one. I wonder if it has to do they're less likely to play NL ball to move runners along or if it's just not having a decent bat for the position? (Maybe I should reread my own link as I tend to go glassy-eyed reading Joe's columns.) I've long defended Kinsler here as a fine player. He's extremely valuable even if his average is only in the .240s because of his power, speed & defense, all coming from playing the 2nd most dangerous position on the field. There's a long way to go but maybe these 2 together can be like Whitaker & Trammell. Which would also mean remaining somewhat unappreciated since neither of those 2 ended up in the HoF.
  18. Yowsa, for a few hours Amazon.ca had the Complete Deluxe for CDN 164. It's now back up to CDN 364. I got the CD only version and am very pleased. The jacket reproductions with sleeves even include the stickers that were on the albums (not as actual stickers mind you). They all fit inside of a cardboard box that opens up to a pile of jacketed discs. Not the most elegant solution but the set is inexpensive per lb. As for the sound I'd compare it to the mastering on the Big Star box or perhaps the Beatles stereo reissues in that yes, these are slightly louder but there's a richer sound than my lone Rough Trade CD (most of my Smiths was on cassette, hence this purchase.) They will be released individually in 2012, and who knows, as Xmas gets closer this box may get knocked down in price some more.
  19. I think one thing that harms the Rangers in this match up is having so many lefty starters. It's not so much about Pujols or Holliday as they hit everybody, but mainly because of Freese, Theriot (who didn't even play tonight), and a few other bench guys hit them better than righties. I was also surprised to see that the Cardinals were the best road hitting team for average and 2nd best for slugging in the majors. So there's more there than the "little train that could" story. I still think the Rangers are a superior team for the long haul, but we all know how these series can go. I'm happy it was a good game given some of the blowouts in the earlier series. I know it's not the case, but when I first saw the use of the heat sensing camera my first thought was "great, you just gave that guy 20 chest x-rays with that shot."
  20. I completely understand the problem of music DVDs not being played as often (or not at all ) as expected as that happens to me, especially with full length (usually rock) concerts. However the Jazz Icons series has been the exception. It certainly helps that the performances are usually very good to excellent. Where they shine for me is that many of the discs comprise of 2 or 3 short sets. So if we've been watching a movie or show on DVD and I'm looking to fill time until the local news, 20 minutes of Brubek or Monk fits the bill. It also makes indecisiveness easier to deal with if the TV is on from the above situation as the music DVD collection is so much smaller than the CD & LP. Finally when they're on many times I'll have the laptop open just looking up now & then, so they essentially become a CD with occasional moving pictures.
  21. That's nice! I remember the old days (oh, maybe 1999?) where it was tricky to stuff to get EAC tweaked just so. It was worth the work, though tiresome walking others through it. I switched to Macs 10 years ago but still have an XP with EAC on it.
  22. I don't think it's stupid at all. It might have made sense to use larger than necessary packaging when DVDs were a new format to differentiate them from CDs, but I loathe the size of the standard cases. I guess too many companies feel they're stuck with it or that's what most consumers prefer.
  23. They've dispensed with the "bonus disc" as a draw to buy the box over individual discs. Although if they aren't selling them individually, maybe that's why. I'll be curious to see if our local library gets the box or not given these tough times. The pricing is a little higher than past sets based on price per DVD, although since it's going from price friendly Naxos to um..., premium priced Mosaic, that would be expected.
  24. Given Jim's talents a pie (instead of marbles, sunglasses or a scarf) could also be included for an extra $100. Is it possible to have a run of just 100 pressed CDs yet order extra prints of the artwork and send CD-Rs to radio & reviewers? (Perhaps this isn't a good idea as it makes a band seem less professional, and given how we have both radio & reviewers here they'll chime in about this.) Personally unless you are certain you can recoup the costs of pressing discs I would lean heavily towards download only. FLAC would be nice, but if that adds costs that make it tough to break even then go for a respectable bitrate on the mp3.
  25. The show came too late for at-the-time comparisons, but he did have that Baby Gerald thing going on.
