Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Note the malware came through Java. Java and Adobe Flash tend to be the main causes of Apple OS hiccups over the years. Flash bad behavior, especially regarding battery life is supposedly the main reason why it wasn't allowed on iPhones & iPads. Of course for an average user it doesn't matter whether the malware attacked through a weakness in the OS or something that comes along with the computer (although even the computers no longer come w/ Flash installed). But just as a person has to know about the phishing tricks used by criminals pretending to be your bank or credit card company, a computer user needs to realize that software updates should only be downloaded from trusted sites. I'm not a cultist (though I was a bit of an Amiga one) as I didn't own an Apple until Jaguar came out. I didn't bother w/ anti-virus until maybe 3 years when a free version became available. Running it the 1st time on a MacBook that had heavily used for a couple of years revealed 2 minor-league viruses, also of the Java kind that needed a Windows file to do anything. In the 2 years since it hasn't bumped into anything yet. Apple was slow to respond this however. There's a 2nd patch out today for users of Lion. -

We still have one in use. However earlier in the week we got iPhones, so the ole rotary may finally just be used for decoration. -

I don't get their appeal at all in this town as we have several better options for organic, top-thru-low shelf wine, cheeses, etc. I guess I don't have as much faith as some have in the TJ name slapped on ever-changing supplier product. For example, I know at one time they sold a cracker made by Late July (w/ the TJ name on it of course) as everything about it lined up, yet at any time TJ may change companies to make the same shaped cracker. Just give me the damn Late July one, hence one reason why I go elsewhere. The produce is ridiculous, I don't want a bag of lemons, I want 1 lemon or 2. Their cheese is inferior compared to alternative stores. I don't drink the 2 buck/3 buck whatever that stuff costs now. I'm not fond of the layout, I loathe how they carry something and then don't (and it's not seasonal stuff I'm talking about). I can see how if someone lives in a place where they only have conventional grocery stores how it would be appealing but this town several stores that slay TJ's. Maybe the "paradox of choice" is a problem for some that TJ's solves. Or maybe just cheap wine wins. -

Ask her to write in cursive why she can't. -
Hooray for Minor League Guy! The NBA's Spurs had a smartass moment the other day when Tim Duncan didn't play in a game. The excuse was DNP-Old. As the Opening Day game in Japan will be the debut of Yoenis Cespedes, check out the man's eyebrows.

Even worse for the Giants is Sports Illustrated picked them win the pennant. They have them losing to the Angels in the World Series. SI doesn't have a very good record with preseason predictions, although Mariners in last sounds about right.

So that explains Eddie's tap technique!

Blues Brothers quotes just come so naturally to you Chicagoans.

Luckily for Peyton when the Saints play in Denver there will be a lot of eyes on the defense. I doubt they'll be allowed to even rush the QB. While there are risks it's a relatively easy division. Not all teams that make (not necessarily win the Super Bowl) look like the result of long-term grand plans anyway. To some degree perhaps the model is like the AZ Cardinals a few years ago, only with a better defense. 9-7 might be good enough to win the division and get in, after that it's the crapshoot of the playoffs. A very good defense and future HOF QB (hmm, also smells a little like the Vikes w/ Farve, minus the great RB) and having a "regular" QB as backup just in case seems like a safer plan to me.

Ah Bronco fans... "James H. "Jim" Driver, 78, of Eagle, Colo., formerly of Columbia, passed away Monday, March 19, 2012, at South Hampton Place in Columbia after a brief illness. An avid Broncos fan, he abhorred Manning and evidently wanted out before a deal was done." Full obit here though that's all of the NFL content.

According to the ALNUS SERRULATA TEMPORARILY FLOODED SHRUBLAND ALLIANCE, you do!

I remember the story but I didn't remember that that was you! For shame, for shame! I've got a few cat scratched LP spines in the Who section from a cat that died over 10 years ago so it's kind of nice to be reminded what a sweet little Attila The Hun she was. It's healthier to love the people & pets more than the music packaging. That said, I have wrapped the Glenn Gould Original Jacket box in protective plastic and am storing it where the current kitty can't get to it. Last year I could see she was eyeing it as a potential scratching post or at least a place to rub her chin.

These type of offers tend to overload the outfits that give them, so it can sometimes take a full day to get the confirmation. I got mine just an hour ago. As far as being concerned about being put on mailing lists, I figure I'm already on the majority of them that they're selling to. Plus you can unsub, and nowadays unsub actually does what it's supposed to. But as the email address I gave them is for shopping transactions, I'll probably stay subscribed.

Yeah, it was soooooooooooooo hard. I'm icing my index finger right now. There was far less risk to one's health (mental or back) doing this than reaching down for a quarter on the sidewalk. I was a tad slower and though I could only bill for 30 seconds I like making $600 an hour.

I avoided fantasy sports for this reason for many years. And while this may happen for the 1st year you play it goes away, or at least it did for me. Although maybe I'm just "blessed" in being a fan of teams that haven't gotten near the playoffs in awhile. It's all about perspective, and it's easy enough to keep fantasy and reality separate. Were it not for fantasy basketball I would probably not bother to tune into much of the goings on in the regular season. As for baseball, because of fantasy I have a respectable knowledge of what goes on in Kansas City and Pittsburgh which without fantasy would be close to zero. So while it can be a sickness it doesn't have to be. I do find the idea of a fantasy sports writer's hall of fame to be a hoot.

I've decided to sire children, just so on an autumnal day I can take my young 'uns to visit the hallowed halls of the FSWA HOF.

The DVDs (visual kind, not DVD-A) Arriving Somewhere and Anesthetize are excellent too. Sometimes I've played them with the video off as the music holds up on its own, which is what you want in a concert DVD. I took a very nonlinear path exploring the band and enjoy it all, some more than others but as I came in late I have none of that "oh no, the style changed again" angst that someone from the beginning might have.

I like those picks also, though I would have liked other suggestions too. If you like what you hear keep working your way from there both forward & backwards.

This would be junior high 1977, but my school had a target shooting team with a shooting range in the basement of the school. So if you were downstairs after school you'd see 13 & 14 year olds walking around with rifles and it was normal. It's a "fun" thing to mention when another school shooting happens.

britannica to stop printing books

It depends on how old and probably some luck too. Most of the time you can't even give them away to Goodwill & the like. But right now on eBay there's a 1957 with many bids at $152 and a 1970 set with 8 bids at $75. And a 1958 with 1 bid for $249. No action on the other sets of varying years. I grew up w/ the 1967 set. When the time comes to deal with "what to do" I'm sure I'll part with it as I have no desire to move it all 2000 miles away. If the fate was a garbage dump I would be tempted to take the book with anatomy, as the transparencies were very cool. I imagine the set I grew up with has less value than most as my parents smoked like fiends. -
Are the Phil Jackson rumors at a roiling boil?

The album is forever associated with the first weekend at college (Illinois). With 2 hometown friends we walked across campus to visit another hometown friend at his dorm. We passed around a light blue bong while Animals played. The host friend spent most of the time describing which animal each of was. I was a sheep, and there was great debate whether one friend was a dog or a pig or a flying pig. Afterwards we all decided to go out, and in a classic leaderless situation each of us assumed that one of us knew where we were going. Finally after about 10 minutes of walking around an upscale residential neighborhood in Urbana I asked if anyone knew where we were. With much stoned laughter the answer was no, so with my great sense of direction not impeded by pot I got us going back towards campus. I took almost 20 years off from listening to any Floyd (probably just 5 hours in that span) because it was always on at parties in h.s. and often in college, and The Wall was released in my senior year of high school. But a couple of years ago I finally got to the point where I could play Floyd again. As Animals was bought on a trashed used LP I sprang for the remaster last fall. I like it.

Thanks. Despite having 4 different boot versions of this material (sort of) I finally went for it at that price. A review of what makes this version different at the beginning of the page.

So that's what the "III" stands for in Griffin's name - 3 1st round picks. Check their front office to see if they dug up George Allen as GM. edit - Actually George Allen would trade picks for an old guy. Never mind.

I hadn't thought of that angle but you may be on to something, as probably the 2nd favorite team to get him is the Cardinals.
