  1. Far as I can tell/hear, this very definitely means they ARE listening to the Beatles. And the Byrds. And the Velvet Underground. And ... well, you know ... The indie kids I know listen only to today's young artists. I think what they're getting at is that the young artists were influenced by the bands before and thus the young listeners are hearing it. Perhaps with some, but with there are quite a few indie bands that have questionable taste. Either that or they just can't play. I'll grant over the past couple of years the hairy folky-rock thing is big as the overly earnest Avett Bros., Fleet Foxes have all deeply inhaled CSN (they're skipping the Y) style and at least The Band's beard styles. Laurel Canyon recycling too with Dawes and others. Apologies for even posting the above, but I'm staring down an OS reinstall countdown (30 min down, 11 to go! Friday night wildness!)
  2. In my experience it's also a matter of individual variation. Indeed. My 15 year old nephew is into rock guitar gods of the '60s & '70s. But I also know people that age through their 30s who have scarcely listened to The Beatles or anything "classic.". Indie all the way. Just as in our time (whenever that was) there's variation.
  3. I can whistle where it's going to go. I'm terrible with names of most everything, but especially titles of instrumentals. Even those that I love, like Monk's. I can take sometime satisfaction when I can guess the album(s) the "unknown" song is on.
  4. I've known a couple of people who were slow to investigate him because of the critical remarks from Miles about him. Some people take that "enemy of my friend" thing too far.
  5. I believe it's '58 Sessions (On Green Dolphin Street, Fran Dance, Stella By Starlight, Love For Sale, Straight No Chaser, My Funny Valentine, Oleo). They use a Japanese cover. I have it as part of the Original Album Classics 5-fer. Thank you! I only know it by the old "pre-remaster" era US Columbia cover.
  6. I can make the following on the box: 'Round About Midnight Miles Ahead Porgy & Bess Kind Of Blue Sketches Of Spain Someday My Prince Will Come 7 Steps To Heaven Miles In Berlin Miles Smiles Nefertiti In A Silent Way Bitches Brew Jack Johnson On The Corner We Want Miles Decoy Star People I'm pretty sure I see (to the left of Porgy): E.S.P. I would E.S.P. would be in such a set! I'm stumped at the cover that has white & red on it below 'Round Midnight. Maybe it's Miles Plays For Cocaine Lovers? I don't know if they're counting discs or albums for their perfect box. I've listed 19 covers (including the one I can't make out) in the above. I don't see Milestones on the box which is a little surprising, but I guess something has to go if you want some post-retirement representation. It could be pictured on another side I suppose, or some other album.

Most if not all of the suggestions are available on Spotify (free streaming service) btw.
  8. They did a nice job of providing tracks from shows that weren't as widely circulated as others from this tour. Either that or they looked at my collection and picked out songs from the 1/2 dozen shows I don't have. The Dark Star > Other One is an especially sweet combo to put on this highly affordable set.
  9. Oh yes! I no longer remember the precise timing but perfection doesn't occur until 3 to 5 minutes into "Rated X." From that point on disc 1 is indeed perfect. I confess I've hardly played disc 2 simply because of the near perfection of disc 1.
  10. The won/loss record nowadays is tricky with the unbalanced schedules and inter-league play where some teams have regular rivals on the extremes of winning & losing. For instance the Mets always face the Yankees, whereas the Cardinals get the Royals. At the moment the Rangers are very happy to have extra games vs. the Astros, although that was a bad thing not that long ago. One day maybe the Mariners will win a World Series (or hell, get to one.) And while having a 116 win team be "one & done" was crushingly sad, I sincerely doubt that winning a title one day will better than this moment. The '95 ALDS victory over the Yanks in one of the most epic playoff series of all-time, having Edgar knock in The Kid for the win! Oh what the hell, I've posted it before, but who can see this enough? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax8yrc7xUss&playnext=1&list=PL9388AE42E9A6A2B1 Dave Niehaus - Not Fade Away
  11. And the NL East has 8 pennants and 4 titles in that span. I'm not sure why you're getting so defensive over a simple remark "does anyone want to win the NL West?" as the "does anyone want to win..." part is a common saying when the contending teams in a division both are experiencing short losing streaks or losing in dramatic fashion. Btw, it's the NL Central that doesn't do much in the playoffs since the realignment. Just 1 title and 3 pennants.
  12. Yes, the proper album is included at the end of the last disc.
  13. I used to love in the old Usenet days when every so often someone would drop by alt.music.who post "I just found an early contract for The Who and other documents, how much do you think these are worth?"
  14. It's mostly that 2 of the guys were Padres and the other's career ended prematurely. In 7 full seasons in SD Winfield only played for 1 (barely) winning team. There wasn't enough talent in the lower part of the line up to knock him in and Jack Murphy wasn't a power hitter's park. As a Yankee for a few years he relied on the likes of Pags, Cerone, Wayne Tolleson, Gary Ward and Kittle to knock him in. (I just caused our Yankee fans to throw up in their mouthes a little.) Gwynn only topped only played 140 games or more from age 30 on twice. It's possible he would have played more than that in '94 & '95 but games were lost due to the strike. All of the greats who played in '94 & '95 end up getting cheated in these "stat fact" sort of lists, with Greg Maddux being hurt greatly as he had phenomenal seasons in the strike years. I'll admit I was surprised how few times Gwynn scored 100 R. Who is this Simba you speak of? If Disney had made the Lion King in the '70s it probably would have given him just enough extra attention to push him into the Hall of Fame.
  15. I'm a big fan of Thome but this is a goofy one. Gwynn was injury prone in his 30s so he rarely got the counting stats, especially as he played on some bad Padre teams (of course he also got to 2 World Series with them.) The '94 strike cost him a 3rd 100 R season. Kirby of course had a short career, out of the game around age 35. Dave & Tony also hit the 99 R mark. Meanwhile Thome walked a ton (none of the above did at his rate), knocked himself in a ton, and also had some firepower in the lineup with Cleveland, so it's not surprising he scored 100 runs as much as he did. Again I'm not knocking him, it's just sometimes writers make strange cases for people, namely taking the worst characteristics of a hall of famer and then comparing someone else's best against it. Do you remember Lee May? He was cursed with RBI, twice getting 98, twice getting 99. Hence why I was half expecting to see more 99s in the threesome.
  16. And not really publicly either as it was an email to Allen that ended up being revealed here. But it is very good of Allen to point out the fine releases by the label despite the exchange he's having with with Sunenblick. Uptown has put out some valuable & highly enjoyable releases. Any fan of The Beatles doing "Smack My Bitch Up" at the very least needs to own the Gillespie-Parker Town Hall.
  17. It's a different team than the one that got pounded on at Fenway with at least 4 new guys in the lineup. Forget Justin Smoak, now it's Mike Carp at 1st! You can't have enough 25 year old 1st base prospects to pin your hopes to I always say. A new kid at 3rd, a LF platoon, and we even threw Willie Mo Pena out there to haunt his former team. Not sure about giving Willie Mo at bats over the kids, but if it were between Willie & Cust at this point I'll vote the former. Maybe these guys can play spoiler in September - or start another losing streak.
  18. It was so sad that the '84 Tigers manhandled the Padres in 5 and Rusty didn't get more at bats, especially as Vin Scully was the announcer.
  19. We popped into Tiger Stadium to catch one of the final games while on a cross country drive. Peeing in a urinal very much like the one in the Wrigley video was a rewarding experience as I imagined the millions of gallons of urine that had passed before me, some of it in-between innings with Ty Cobb & Harry Heilmann in the lineup. And I read in the paper the next day that that night someone tried to steal a urinal. Surely not the trough I used? How? It must have been a more personal-sized potty I didn't see in another bathroom. With enough beer (Old Style at Wrigley), gumption and no fear of cooties anything is possible. Dan Patrick has been mildly fascinated by it as I've heard parts of his show the past 2 days. Today he set the over/under at 33 just because it's a hard thing to do and it's getting harder. Ernie had a connection to the Boston Braves. There's been tons of stuff written about the NY Giants and especially Brooklyn, but I confess other than knowing about Tommy Holmes streak I don't know much about the Braves time there.
  20. A couple of videos from the Midwest. First, footage Mike Laga hitting a foul ball out of Busch Stadium in 1986. Other than former NFL Cardinal kicker Jim Bakken hitting a golf ball out of the park it's believed to be the only ball to leave the stadium. Tim McCarver almost sounds like a kid. Mike Laga foul ball As for the next one, someone slip & slides in one of Wrigley's bathrooms. I'm going go take a shower now.
  21. Alright! A well deserved reward for your music and for having to put up with no show bassists!
  22. I heard he's had the most 1 hit games of the players who have had streaks of 30 games. Maybe it was when he was at 28 games too - oh the slicing & dicing that can be done with stats nowadays. Since it only takes 1 hit to keep the streak going I've always wondered if one day I'd see a sub-.250 pull something like this off. No more wondering necessary.
  23. ...punishment before verdict, that is... And when you consider it's the worst crime to be accused of for someone who's incarcerated, let alone one with a broken elbow...Not that I want to add to how disturbing all of this is.
  24. As I seem to have terrific jinxing powers (Pirates, Indians) I will not, for your sake.
  25. Don't you know? You're supposed to stop hitting home runs too! It's part of "the code" man!
