  1. What cracks me up is to the right of where the songs are listed there's the red half moon that looks like where the space for the booklet was meant to go, had they made a pocket for it. The fact that they picked this era, and not just one show, and not just one DVD, has me excited that there will be more great things to come. Maybe they actually paid attention to that Legacy poll they had last year (or the year before) where one apportioned votes amongst proposed projects.
  2. Indeed! One thing left in the vault that they must release at some point and would make a lovely companion piece is Mac Court 1/22/78. It's not just local pride that makes me say that (I didn't even live here at the time), it's this part: Terrapin Station-> Drums-> The Other One-> Close Encounters-> Saint Stephen-> Not Fade Away And it's not really because of Jerry riffing the Close Encounters theme, but for what happens going into, out of (and during) "The Other One" and "St. Stephen." It's the musical equivalent of a whirlpool that could suck Moby Dick down and smash him on the bottom of the ocean. This is a good thing, even though I do love whales. The boys were lifting weights & eating their Wheaties in the winter of early '78.
  3. Congrats! Stormin' Gorman and the crew would be proud. It's wild to think it's possible that they could face their old rivals the Tigers in a World Series.
  4. It's that kind of attitude that's partially responsible for the NBA strike. The owners should hire you to make that statement when they're doing foolish thing like paying big for the likes of Joe Johnson or merely overpaying bench guys by 1/2 a million or so.
  5. My favorite vinyl side is Chronic Town w/ "Wolves, Lower," "Gardening At Night" and "Boxcars." If you want to hear the horror of what might have been, check out the Stephen Hague produced demo of Catapult. That brought back some hairy memories of synth bands of the early '80s.
  6. Eh...Maybe it's because I didn't reproduce but I hate "I Will Take You Home" even more than Brent's woman-hating song. It sounded like it belonged to the lovechild of later day Doobie Brothers & Christopher Cross. It was a major buzzkill back in the day, more so than "Day Job" since that one contained some truth. It probably won't change the mind of skeptics as Jerry's voice is hoarse as hell, but Dick's Picks 6 from '83 isn't as bad as the reviews. It falls victim to "they should have picked the show before (or after)" where "St. Stephen" was performed. Although a whole different kettle of band I usually pick the '80 acoustic release Reckoning as the one to try for those who say the hate the band. I can't imagine someone not liking it, though of course some people will anyway.
  7. Pretty much me to a tee. I got in as close to ground floor as someone could not from Athens. I remember playing Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, then back to Chronic Town because that's all there was to their catalog and I hadn't started tape trading yet. My interest lessened after Berry left though I did like the album before alright. The timing of the announcement surprised me but as you say, I'm glad the parting is friendly and I respect them for not doing a retirement payday tour as they weren't feeling it.
  8. Not all cats are that into mice anyway.
  9. Technically they weren't Dick's Picks as that series was limited to shows that were 2 track. Europe was multi-tracked. Rockin' is the only complete show released from Europe. 100 Year Hall got the "good stuff" but is incomplete. To assist with what from Europe (or any other period) has been officially released this site is very helpful as it does it by date & venue.
  10. Very nice! I couldn't justify buying the whole shebang as I already have all but 5 and so many haven't been played in many years. But I can see buying a few that I haven't heard and possibly upgrading a couple I have.
  11. Yup, the article says aluminum siding and pipes (guessing copper) so I'm guessing that it's for the materials to resell. Also East St. Louis isn't exactly a prosperous place. This is a big problem in Oregon and many other places. I believe in the UK a sculpture that weighed close to a ton was stolen presumably for scrap value.
  12. It's mostly to lock into a their best pre-release price. There's no telling what can happen afterwards. Scanning through my database I can see examples on both ends. One box set is 15% higher one year later. Another is the same 1/2 a year later, and yes, another 10% cheaper. There are certain things like the James Brown Singles series where to beat or tie the pre-order price it took a lot scrambling & patience. I speak as a scrambler. I'm fairly certain there are some classical hi-res EU releases that were terrific pre-order deals too given that these sort of releases tend to be limited (in distribution, not in mastering.)
  13. Has that suitcase from "Europe" arrived yet? If so you have a wee bit of listening. If not, there's always more critical Winterland flute level listening.
  14. It worked the same way for most of the Great Plains and into the Rocky Mountains too - a powerful transmitter and some great voices will do wonders for your fanbase. Also not having any MLB teams to the west of you helps too! Oh sure later on there are a couple of teams 2000 miles away... Even into the '90s it was easy to pick up Cardinal games (from their affiliate network) in western Nebraska and parts of Montana.
  15. Those were great! I knew Mathews finished with the 'stros & Tigers but I hadn't realized he hit #500 off of Marichal. A great announcer can make a bad team more enjoyable, as Cubs fans from Brickhouse through Carey know too well.
  16. To their credit since dumping players they've finally picked up a better winning (or less losing) pace and should avoid losing 110. Back in August they were threatening that level of ineptitude. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the franchise as the Cardinals traded one of my favorite players Jose Cruz to them. Traded for "cash" (and not Dave Cash) I believe. They played the speed turf type of NL ball so well, though they also managed to have some bangers whose power was disguised in that massive Astrodome. For some reason quite a few Houstonites live up here and I've managed to befriend 3, so it's sort of like I live in a suburb of Houston, only much cooler with trees & mountains, but much crappier Vietnamese food.
  17. Nope. I had 2 items that were released on Tuesday. The one that had a later shipping notice arrived earlier in the day on Thursday than the other. I'm more than happy with things consistently landing here on a Thursday for a Tuesday release. I got stuff I can play in the meantime, and I'll put the Prime cost towards the Mosaic Coleman Hawkins.
  18. Nor me! I would love to see the flute-lowering plug-in used on other music from this era. (There is a track where a guest flutist appeared and compared to the lesser quality sounding boots it's softer. This is an improvement!) About 10 minutes of drum solo was snipped out of version of "Tax Free" as well. There are other snips. I've owned the complete set for a long time but didn't play it much compared to other live Jimi. His shows were often marred by technical problems which sometimes disrupted the flow. While I've only played disc 1 thus far I have high hopes that the editing will improve the listening experience, and the sound quality (as with the past releases that Kramer was involved with) is great. I used to orthodox about preserving "reality" but now I'm more into having something be more enjoyable, and I think this will do it.
  19. It might at that. A couple of months ago a friend of mine who torrents way too much stuff presented me with an audience recording of this. He knows I love jazz and since Wynton is the king of jazz, and Clapton is "god," he figured these two together was better than peanut butter & chocolate together. I made it about 2 minutes into "Ice Cream," then skipped around a bit. I was able to return to it to him without comment thanks to a distracting moment of a game going on in a bar. Let's see, so Wynton has paired himself with a country music icon and a "guitar god," what's next? Oooo, what's on Paul McCartney's calendar?
  20. A 200th knucklin' win for you yesterday is a fine present! Happy birthday!
  21. I always use the cheap form (Super Saver) shipping as I live in the NW and the majority of things get here quick enough (usually 2 days.) Once in awhile something will ship on the Saturday before a Tuesday release. Today the Hendrix set was shipped this afternoon (the day of the release.) It varies. Not really. I usually get packages by Friday (assuming a Tues. release date) at the latest (usually a day or 2 earlier.) But a typical route for me is from Seattle to Eugene, so I have an advantage of being near a common shipping point. Mostly what others have said, it will lock you into the lowest price through the release date. If you don't feel an immediate need to pre-order or own something right away you might try the Camel x 3 site which can alert you when an item hits the price you're willing to buy at.
  22. The lion one isn't too bad, but honey badger don't care, it just takes what it wants!
  23. Thanks for sharing that Patrick. This isn't just the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 but for me it's also for my mom's Alzheimer's diagnosis which happened a couple of weeks before that, so it's an understatement to say that was a "good read."
  24. So any opinions on the possibility of the Astros moving to the AL West? If it happens I think it's not going until 2013 at the earliest. On the one hand it is so effin' stupid that the NL Central has 6 teams and the AL West just 4. On the other hand you're taking a team with 49 years in the NL. Why were the Brewers moved from the AL to NL again? (Actually the Brewers are a good regional fit for the NL Central - although they were in the AL too.) From what I gather Houston isn't pleased with returning to a Western division as it means many more early broadcast games when the team will be on the west coast. In the olden geographical stupid days their "western" opponents included Cincinnati & Atlanta, so they were playing all over the place time wise. The amusing thing is that if Houston does move into the AL West it means that the Rangers & Astros will have to find new opponents for interleague play since both Texas rivals will be in the same division. I don't know what teams you manufacture a historic or geographical rivalry with if Houston moves to the AL West, though that hasn't stopped baseball for those teams that don't have them.
  25. I think this is a reward for all of us who re-bought the albums for remastering & bonus tracks. Never mind metal spines & trumpet cases.
