That ended up replacing a Max Roach '68, or at least according to the line up listed in the April announcement. More nice looking sets.

I was pretty frickin' obvious wasn't it. And btw, on the Abbey Road remaster I can hear a whole 'nother layer of crickets. In fact I think I can them breath. Funny about the crickets. I was driving listening to it and said, "damn, how'd those crickets get in my car?" Then, I realized it was the song. I swear this is true. A grasshopper ended up coming into the house and into the stereo room not long after I played Abbey Road. Coincidence? I think not!

I was able to get the Ray Price Bear Family box for "just" $170ish, so I can have my honky tonk and eat mono Liverpool facsimile goodness too for what the former lists for. Not that anyone pays list, but you gotta rationalize ya know.
-
Oh I know, and the price isn't bad but I try my best to not get excited about wee facsimile part since I have the LPs. I don't need glasses for the latter. The better mastering part of the equation is another matter. Now to step away from this thread and go look for ones on Bear Family. Though it is getting more & more likely that I'll be doing both as that mono box does look to be one sweet package.

Bass! There's a bassist on this album! Who knew? This was tops on my list as my MSFL vinyl is too...uh, mannered. (Something about it didn't move me to become a MSFL vinyl junkie back then.) Plus this was the 1st rock album I listened to on the folks' Magnavox console while I played with my Matchbox & Hot Wheels cars (just last week! ) so there are highly sentimental reasons for getting it. I might still play the UK needle drop or the vinyls I own for old time's sake as some of the pops have become part of the song for me but boy howdy...great work. What a strange time we live in where lately rock reissues (Elvis P., Rod the Mod) are being released with mighty fine masterings, meanwhile the companies doing it are in deep dodo financially for a multitude of reasons, everything from too much leverage to the piracy problems. I have hope that they've discovered that they can resell it all to old (40+) folks who don't want overly compressed music & who for some reason still want something to touch. Whatever happens, I'm over my knee jerk reaction that rock reissues will likely be shrill or compressed, or other "Hoffman" terms for bad masterings.

Argh! Passed by an independent shop that was selling them for $11 so I grabbed Beatles For Sale & Abbey Road. Would have gotten the White Album too had they had it as my copies of that one could be improved upon. Unlike some I've never had a severe reaction to stereo versions after hearing mono, nor do I consider the Dexterized songs to be abominations. I'm glad to have variations of it all considering I've heard the songs 10,000 times or whatever. Darn the luck Beatles For Sale does sound very nice, very very nice - the drums and acoustic guitar especially. Dammit, all the compliments about the clarity is correct, at least with the initial impression. This album remained fresher for me than any of them as it was probably the least played when I was young. I love the Lennon lead vocal original songs, liked the covers and always found "Baby's In Black" to be such an odd choice to add to their short live sets. And "Mr. Moonlight" is so bad that I love it. It's a fun album to sing along to when doing dishes. Hell, I could see getting it all...again. Still, as I live in a college town I think I can pick off the stereos at my leisure as they'll show up used left & right, especially before winter break and then again after as the kiddies need money and cash in presents from parents. But I may fold and have to get the mono box after all. Aye...

I'm pretty lucky my public library has about 20 Selects, including those I never quite could pull the trigger on like the Brookmeyer or the Gordon, though I don't think they've been keeping up with the more recent ones. I continue to buy the ones I want and sometimes even forget to preview a copy from the library beforehand, such as the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios. Hooray for good libraries.

I thought that was all Paul. No? One each, George, John, Paul. Forgetting the order. John is the one with all the distortion. George is using the slide. That's how I identify them. I believe the order is Paul, George, John... A remaster wasn't necessary to tell that though. Sorry, I don't mean to sound snotty, but some of the stuff I read about the remasters revealing has always been there, whether you had your parents shitty beat up vinyl or Ebbett's CDRs or a vinyl dub on low bias tape. Maybe because as a teen I was buying mail order import LPs with mowing money that I too spent the time to really listen (and the album collection was a 200th or so what it is now too, which makes a huge difference), just like people who are excited about buying the remasters and (re)learning about the differences between stereo & mono. Oh hell, at some point I'll finally cave but for now I'm about to lose my Bear Family virginity and don't want to be talked into any of this. I have it all and then some more, other than apparently there's a stereo "I Call Your Name" I've never heard as I own it in mono on a 4 song vinyl EP...wait, though maybe I have it on...Oh who the hell cares, I'm not going to be talked into this now. What I have sounds pretty #$@!&!@ good - I know cause I was playing again. Rather than 40 year old music it'll be 50 & 70 instead. The mono box I can catch on the next format if need be. Screw you guys, I'm going to wait for the mono in 5.1 on blu-ray! And you know, when you catch yourself getting excited about loving LP reproductions and you have the things they're reproducing, take a deep breath and think for a second. This is like an ex-smoker hanging out with a smoker, enjoying a wee bit of 2nd hand smoke while resisting the urge. Coming up on 10 years on the smoke avoidance, but I'm playing with fire here. And really, I should upgrade the overplayed Abbey Road from MSFL, parent's US Apple and the dub of the UK vinyl...of course it's better to buy in bulk...gah, I'm outta here.

Hmm, one has a few choices amongst the offerings at yourmusic.com... I too liked him as a kid from what I saw on his show and on Carson and whatnot, but only have him on Beach Boys album(s?). It wouldn't hurt to something in the queue, even just as a reminder for later.

To getting healthy again! Paps, I wish the best in putting all of this to where years later in a short-handed way you can say "Yeah, I did that too." Practice your John Wayne imitation in the meantime and copy results off of Bruce for this test in life.

I only know this because I have him on a fantasy team, but he's had a pretty awful 2nd half. Since the All-Star Game (11 starts) hitters are hitting .290 off him, ERA & WHIP are 4.48 & 1.55. Hmm, though he has pitched fine against the Yankees in 2 games. The Tigers lost both (the last a 2-1), another where he left a scoreless game after 6 and the team lost 11-0. Maybe lately he's just in a Jack Morris phase, where he just wins baby (oops, that's Al Davis), damn the stats. I kept him on my team so I guess I'm optimistic. Up to snuff Verlander & Jackson with shots of Leyland in the dugout dying for a cigarette makes for some potentially damn good watchable baseball.

Head over to the Mingus corner. Or Braxton too. Might be safer in the Braxton room as Mingus is so ornery.

That is probably the biggest crock of shit Microsoft has ever come up with, none of their products are ever really backward compatible. I'm sticking with XP though, better the devil you know. I needed a new copy of XP and they don't sell them anymore. Well if others are in the same boat, there's always eBay. Every flavor of craptastic XP you could ask for. -
There's no question he'll be drafted but his spot in the draft will suffer for not having a big final season - or any season. He'll help himself when he works out at the draft combine but with unguaranteed contracts in the NFL, signing bonuses are the big thing, and second or third round picks get less than players taken in the first round. Exactly! I guess it's just semantics, but I bet there are some scouts who wish most highly rated prospects slugged another player just to save themselves millions. I understand the concerns regarding such behavior, but the way it sounds it print is so damn ludicrous. The NFL is such a violent organization to get all high & mighty about this, pathetic as Blount was cracks me up. Let's see, not that long ago a Duck back gone pro got in trouble with a Whizzinator. UZero is on a roll!

I'm amused that in a league with murderers, rapists, and other hellions that one punch makes a guy undraftable. I'll believe it when I see it.

The With The Beatles artwork would look fine.
-
Yup, they're not sold individually. Other ways that while not a perfect substitute but may work for you include finding people who are dumping their Dr. Ebbetts or Purple Chick CDRs of the mono vinyl needle drops, or if you're vinyl hound.

I am surprised that you are repeating this falsehood. It was established at the beginning of the year that while they made the marker points the same, the dimensions are not identical. The old stadium had a bend in the rightfield wall. With the lengthy scoreboard now embedded, the wall has to be straight. The bottom line is that for a substantial distance in right field, the fence is an average of five feet closer. In one section, its nine feet closer! On top of that, the fence is what, two feet lower? Put it all together and its a joke to say that the dimensions are the same. Honestly didn't know that. Overlay showing the difference.

Actually the last 3 albums. Not that anyone is going to be playing Yellow Submarine (the original, not the other album with the same name) all the way through much anyway. Also the mono box buyers get stereo versions (1965, not the '80s remix) of Help! (UK, not US version) and Rubber Soul (UK, not US.) Nah, nothing confusing at all for the newcomer.
-
Oh good for you for ordering that though! I endlessly forget to include it in my nominees as since they own it it can't time out, whereas all the other big boxes can. I suppose also because there may be a few other live Parker discs I should get before this set is my thinking, along with the competition of all the other Mosaics. When I get back from vacation I intend to finally buy the Armstrong and probably add a Select too.

Yeah, and it's kind of funny (strange) how the best of the recently traded pitchers Kazmir picks up a loss, while the guys with 8 or 9 ERAs (whatever) win/win/win (Smoltz x 2 and Brad F. Penny.) Then again Kaz was facing Felix. Oh not to jinx the still young man, but this is the year where he's turned the corner. For a couple of years there it was kind of up in the air, though again he started so young. If all the parts of his body hold together it's scary good to think of how good he could become. As for the WC races, roller coaster rides for everybody! Less so for M's fans though it's still possible!

Tiny sample size, but Teix is 3 for 5 with a double vs. Wagner, Matsui 1 for 5.

"Put that on the f---ing dot-com." You can practically see Bowa turn red as you read the above paragraph.
