  1. A "good read" is fine, but if you have glaring errors (and not just minor "stat" things) then you run into the problem of what's true & what's not. That can be a problem with bios & histories. It's one thing to get a number or date wrong, but the criticisms go beyond that. Rather than stats obsessed I'd call him "facts obsessed" in this case.
  2. I enjoyed October 1964 but skipped Summer of '49 as Bill James skewered it in his Baseball Book 1991. You can find a list of some of the errors on the Amazon review page. The title of Bill's 4 page critical article from The Baseball Book 1991 goes like this: Summer of '49 Or Was that '50 Wait a minute, I'm almost sure that was '37 And I think maybe that was Vince DiMaggio

Chris provided excellent advice, but as a Mac user use this link for the Audacity download. For some reason he provided a Windows link.
  4. I too suffer from the same affliction. I thought this was going to be a slow year for buying and even new interests but something happened once fall came around. As others have stated at least it's not an expensive habit compared to other interests some have such as cars or wine for example, never mind making having kids. Uh, not that the latter is a "habit." I'd say as you aren't being forced to sell music right after buying you have it under control (assuming you aren't paying credit card interest on your purchases.) As you're in the Twin Cities I'm guessing you have a decent library system, so I'd recommend using it to investigate some musical curiosities. I've been able to trick myself numerous times by thinking I've bought something through borrowing. It's also a good way to check out masterings, or if you really need to own ________. And if you ever dip a toe into classical music, a library can be a great thing! Note to anyone concerned I'm not suggesting burning library copies, far from it. There are some areas of music where I've decided that I'm more than happy to let the public library store "my copy" and save my own shrinking shelf space!

Not sure if bookshelf size is acceptable to you, but Paradigm gets excellent reviews in the "bang for a buck" category. Not sure if the exact model in the review link I'm providing at the end is still made or not, but it gives you an idea...of a fawning review at least.
  7. That was fun wasn't it? I recall going from A Silent Way, 'Round Midnight, Blackhawk 2 to Big Fun in the early going. I took me awhile to buy OJC's as I thought "Original Jazz Classics" sounded too much like K-TEL or those other "only on TV" music labels.
  8. You haven't heard Neko Case then.
  9. It was happening at Led Zeppelin concerts too in the mid-70s. At a number of shows you can hear Robert ask audience members (in his usual ditzy way) not to throw firecrackers. I think I have a few Who audience recordings where you can hear them being set off too. While mostly a '70s thing, it happened at Butthole Surfers shows in the early '90s. Though a lot of stuff happened at Butthole Surfer shows...
  10. Wow, the baseball writers voted for the right guys for both league's Cy & MVP awards. I don't think this has ever happened before. It took about 25 years but finally such things as looking at a pitcher's win total without considering run support may finally be recognized as silly by enough of the voters. Hell, maybe the baseball writers should turn their attention to the Grammies.
  11. I knew it was something like that, yeah. Still, Ringo was the last one out of the room, and Long & Winding turned out the lights on the charts. Anybody know why/how Ob-La-Di got issued as a single in the late 70s? WTF was that? I mean, I bought one just to have it, but was there some secret publicity move that I missed that necessitated a "new" Beatles single made of two old songs? It was part of program in 1976 by Capitol to promote & sell the music all over again. "Got To Get You Into My Life" was another song released in '76 as a single. The LP comp. Rock & Roll Music had been released that summer as well. Live At The Hollywood Bowl came out the next. As far as why that (horrid) song you got me, other than it had been a single for another group, so perhaps Capitol thought it was chart-worthy.
  12. Can anyone answer this question yet? Why don't you ask Mosaic?
  13. When early word of Naked came out it many fans thought it was going to be the same as the Get Back acetate that Glyn Johns had put together in 1969 and was given to a few radio stations and subsequently bootlegged. It did not have "Across The Universe" or "I Me Mine" and instead had "Save The Last Dance For Me," "Rocker," "Don't Let Me Down" "The Walk" and "Teddy Boy." Also "Dig It" was 4 minutes or so rather than under a minute. Lennon came up with idea of redoing the Please Please Me cover (as seen on the "blue" double LP compilation) with their more hairy visages. So Naked isn't Get Back, but then again Get Back wasn't a final band decision either. While providing de-Spectorized versions of "The Long & Winding Road" and "Across The Universe" (which wasn't a part of the original concept, though there was "concept drift" throughout this time) and getting "Don't Let Me Down" on the album, the assembly of Naked seems less authentic than it could have been.
  14. I was just mentioning this to a friend after the Sunday night game. If you could wave a wand and heal Troy's knee for the rest of the season I'd just as soon see the 4 AFC teams above play each other and reduce the NFC to Vikes vs. Saints. I also thought maybe I wasn't giving the Chargers enough credit, but it's too hard to find another team to even it out. Having watched about 10 minutes of the Seahawks offense last Sunday followed by the Pats-Colts, I just don't want to watch bad football. And there's a lot of bad football being played, especially if you live where the networks insist on showing the Seahawks & 49ers every blasted week.
  15. There are lots of versions of the Get Back boot out there and always have been, be it vinyl, tape or CD.
  16. In other yourmusic news Jackie McLean's Bluesnik is by "unknown artist." For some reason CD Universe listed the RVG as an import during the pre-order stage earlier in the year. I wonder if there was a type on the barcode that screws up its listing?
  17. I was lucky enough to score used copies of Kiss, Kiss and another collection for just a buck or 2 each back in the late '80s. I should pull one of those out as a matter of fact.
  18. I have a friend who dropped acid and saw it at the Ziegfield. He said up to that point in his life his parents didn't have a color TV so when he saw it at home he thought it was black & white for the whole film. So when when the movie went to color in the theater under those conditions...Yowsa!
  19. Ha, apparently we occupied the same body at that age.

    Clash fans

Let's see, looking at the Essential Clash song list... Oh yeah, songs like "Lost In The Supermarket" and "Jimmy Jazz" and they're not a punk band anymore. The triple LP Sandinista! has even a greater diversity of styles that's barely hinted at on Essential. A child singing "Career Opportunities", tape manipulation, a violin dominated song, it's hard to believe it's mostly the same band as on the debut a few years earlier. A triple album allows experimentation or all out wankery, and they did plenty of both.
  21. Thanks for passing on the health info as it's always useful to hear from someone going through it. And boy, talk about an awful Catch-22! Wishing you a speedy recovery.
  22. A Dew in your first try! Thanks for the reminder about the 40th anniversary of the other show. Good excuse to give DP 16 a spin.
  23. Let's see if this does the trick. 1) Click on your profile photo. 2) You should be on page that let's you edit your photo. There will be choices above the box that have your profile pictures. The last choice to the right on top of the box with your profile photo(s) will be "Change Profile Picture." Click that. 3) Now you will see a new page and near the top is "Upload Picture." Below that are the words "You can upload a JPG, GIF or PNG file." Click the button that says Choose File just below that. 4) Now you can select the photo from your computer. You'll want to (likely) go to Pictures>iPhoto Library>wherever else this picture is. Upload picture. Um, let's see if this enough information for you as I don't actually have any more photos of myself that I want on my Facebook page.
  24. Best series to watch since the White Sox - Astros. It makes me feel younger seeing the 4 Yanks from '96 too. In '96 the Red Sox had Canseco DHing and Mike Greenwell & Mo Vaughn were playing. Wakefield was on the roster though. The '96 Phils finished last and had Schilling as their ace. Time flies eh? Here's a look at how the Yankees & Phillies were built. Astonishing how similar they were in developed talent and FAs and such. Also pretty neat seeing how Pettitte wasn't even drafted, and Jorge was a 24th round pick out of high school. Added bonus that the Yankees have a middle reliever who was born in Astoria OR. Yes, some thing may fascinate you more than others, or not at all. Congrats to my 2nd favorite AL team. :-) Highly similar story as Ghost (down to the Horace Clarke baseball card) as far as them not being very good when I was a kid just starting to follow baseball. Loved Roy White and Thurman, and was a big fan of Billy Martin. So yeah, though I've gone native with the Mariners I still like the Yankees. But lots of respect for the Phillies. Back to back appearances, and not only a great core but all throughout the lineup. Carlos Ruiz has a hell of a World Series power stroke too.
  25. Just going off one mono cd, but I was not blown away by the improvement. I'm going to have to wait and listen to the monos a lot more. Play these a little louder than you normally play your CDs (unless you're listening through headphones - I don't want to be responsible for hearing damage.) Someone(s) suggested this much earlier in the thread and it'll help with the "oomph."
