  1. Simplicity is a beautiful thing and so easy to overlook...but so noticeable when it ain't there.
  2. I really like that little repeated motif that drifts in and out throughout the arrangement, it's almost got a Gershwin mood to it. I don't think I've ever heard that song played with that particular mood before, it's got an ominous quality about it. You are also correct about the arrangement of the soloists, they don't stand out as "hey, I'm soloing now", but fit in to create a cohesive whole. It's an interesting album, think it will take several spins to really sink in.
  3. I'll spin that one tonight, I'm stuck at work this afternoon.
  4. The only nightmare I ever had regarding Mosaic Sets was when I had to sell all of mine to pay rent back in 2006.
  5. Interesting. That's a new one for the history books. Where was the CD made? By 1987, it was probably the US. I'll have to pull a few "Kill 'Em All" discs out of the used bins around the area and see if any of them show this. It's the first US release (easy to tell because it has 2 bonus tracks not on later issues, Am I Evil and Blitzkrieg). The catalog number is: 60766-2 - printed on the disc it says: Made in the U.S.A. by WEA Manufacturing Inc.
  6. The lovely Anadina has been watching this show and recommends it. I believe that it can be rented. . . . I checked and Netflix carries it, at some point when I restart my subscription I'll order it.
  7. Regarding the "pin holes" developing in pressed CDs, I have one. It was the original 1987 CD pressing of Metallica - Kill 'em All. I noticed at some point during the late 90's that it had some pinholes visible when I held it up to the light...looking at it again recently I noticed there were ALOT more of them. The disc hardly ever gets played, but the holes seem to have multiplied over the years. The funny thing...it still plays all the way through with no skips.
  8. Back in the 70's the main soft drink that my Grandmother would bring home was good ole RC Cola. Remember that?
  9. I'd like to watch Damages but missed the first season. Will have to check and see if the DVDs are available for rent somewhere (I can't afford to purchase box sets of TV shows)
  10. I was already in full-on depression today, this news just makes it worse. R.I.P. Fathead.

    Jimmy Forrest

By 2 or 3 years, although I'm pretty sure Forrest was in the band at the time Happy Go Lucky Local was first recorded.
  12. Dan, you are correct, if you don't use your computer as part of your stereo system you don't need the audio player. I've been using my computer as a major component of my stereo since 2002 or so, I couldn't imagine it any other way at this point.
  13. Dan, immediately download this free software: http://www.foobar2000.org/ Best audio player I have ever used! I prefer VU Player. The conversion tool is nice to have too. Kevin Actually, foobar just upgraded their built-in converter and it's much easier to use now.
  14. I use VBR - V0. They sound great.

  16. This is the turntable I have, a Technics 1800.
  17. It actually isn't that bad of an idea though, if you can bribe people to do volunteer work by giving them free coffee...more power to 'em.
  18. Thanks to CSI and the various commercials...I'll probably never be able to listen to The Who again.
  19. The ad is okay...Pepsi sucks. Diet Coke is da bomb.
  20. I watched Fringe as well, I still can't decide if I actually like it or not...but I'll keep watching it for now. I kept asking myself if I really wanted to invest in another "sci-fi conspiracy" show...The X-Files kind of satisfied that urge for me. It's serious & humor elements aren't in balance yet, like it can't quite decide what tone it wants to achieve...we'll see if it gets itself on course.
  21. Quite a few blogs are, but storage space for FLAC files will continue to be an issue. Also, until Apple makes FLAC compatible with iPods, I don't see it taking off in a major consumer fashion. The majority of the general public doesn't care about quality, they want quantity and affordability. It is easy to convert flac/wav files to mp3 for the ipod. If you don't want better sound, dump the flacs after conversion. Don't get me wrong...I'm a fan of FLAC files...but I'm also realistic about the music industry caring about offering quality over quantity. The general public isn't screaming for a new file format either, so until something radical happens I don't see the status quo going away.

    Jimmy Forrest

Highly recommended! Very sparse quartet recording with Joe Zawinul, Tommy Potter & Clarence Johnston. He re-visits his early hit "Bolo Blues" and there's a stunning take on "Yesterdays". Not a bad moment on the record.

    Jimmy Forrest

I was listening to "Out Of The Forrest" and was struck yet again by what a GORGEOUS player Jimmy was. An absolutely lovely tone (especially on the upper end of the tenor's range) and a distinctive vibrato. Not to mention the fact that he can really tear it up when he wants. I'm especially fond of his work on blues, but the man sounded good in pretty much any context. I was looking through the short bio on AMG and he had quite a long career, there does seem to be a gap of about 10 years (1962-1972) but then he picked up again relatively steady throughout the 70s. What are your thoughts on Jimmy Forrest? Favorite albums?
  25. Ah...I'd love to own that one.
