do you use your phone book?????
Shawn replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't opened a phone book in years (although I did use a couple to hold up a broken futon frame). -

Happy Birthday! Thanks for all the musical inspiration,

Warehouse 13 - Season 3
-
I had completely forgotten about this thread. LOL. The Iommi book I'm definitely going to purchase, he's one of the most important and influential musicians (to me) and it's a must-read. Re: the reunion album/tour. I'm really excited that Iommi, Geezer & Bill Ward are going to be playing together again...but Ozzy? He's too far over the hill to be at all convincing, his recent albums have been auto-tuned garbage without a lick of substance to them. I really don't think he has anything left in the tank. Now he could surprise us I suppose, but I wouldn't bet on it. I would have been more interested in either a reunion with Ian Gillan...or maybe someone like Glenn Hughes.

I ended up with an extra, unopened copy of this CD/magazine. PM me if anybody (in the US) wants it -- I'd be glad to send out at no cost. The only thing I'd ask is that you Paypal the seller ROCK HARD GmbH something reasonable (~$10), as a thank you for his great customer service. I'd be interested in taking this off your hands. I'll send you a PM.

I probably like it because 70's prog is my favorite style of music currently and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I dunno, Shawn, the lovey dovey Bones and Booth show feels wrong to me. Maybe part of the lasting appeal of the show was the unconsummated mutual attraction of the two. Now that the bubble has burst it just feels as if something is amiss. They've flirted around with the possibility of them getting together for 6 seasons, so I'm happy they finally did it. The second episode was pretty lackluster (but that was primarily the stupid case they were working). Still feels like the same show to me. Finished up Season One of Warehouse 13, starting on Season Two.

I think his mix of the Opeth record and his remix of Aqualung are the two best things he's done this year. I really like Grace For Drowning, it's kind of a melancholic listen, but that's fine. He has many musical interests, I'm happy to join him for the ride just to see where it takes me.

There are many good ones (I'm also fond of the first venture out into the snow), but like you I think this one is by far the best.

Somehow I missed the Packers record when I was looking at standings. I still think it's fairly impressive that they've only had one loss so far, nice to see the 49ers with a winning record. That Ravens/Steelers game was intense! Real fun to watch.

The best record in the NFL is currently held by the 49ers. That's something I didn't expect at this point in the season.

ATTACK THE BLOCK. This little independent British film is a GEM! Best sci-fi action/comedy that I've seen for a long while, it starts immediately and never lets up. The alien critters are simple in design but very effective. I can definitely see myself watching this again, it's a hoot!

I rip everything in lossless format, play it on my Mac which is the main component of my stereo system. It sounds identical to the physical product, except I can shuffle around 15,000 songs or so instead of 10 at a time. Using a search box instead of trying to find a disc on the shelf is a major time saver and my time is valuable. These days the discs I buy usually have a bonus DVD or something that gets me to spring for the physical product. However they still end being ripped into the computer at some point and then the disc remains sitting on the shelf.

Hard drives are CHEAP. $80 will get you a 2 TB drive on sale. Back everything up on at least 2 backups, never need to worry about it. I spent my entire life with tons of physical product, LPs, then cassettes, then CDs, then DVDs and Blu-Rays...and I gotta say I'm tired of ALL of it. I just want what's inside, the container is worthless.

Both of these 60s albums with Katz (The Feeling Is Mutual is the other) are AMAZING and as far as I'm concerned should be in any jazz collection, fantastic performances!

x2. Or the "ban user" function could come in handy here.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Shawn replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That's a shame, he's one of my favorites. I saw him in the late 80's and he was fantastic, though granted ALOT of time has passed since then. -
Warehouse 13 - Season 1 - Pleasant enough diversion, goofy but it's heart is in the right place. Bones - Season 7 - watched the premier episode last night and I gotta say I loved it, so many great characters on this show.

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is easily one of my favorite movies of all-time. Suspense is the name of the game and I think Hitchcock would have approved with Carpenter's handling of the genre. Pretty much every element works in that film, cinematography, score, acting, direction, editing, etc. It was unfairly ignored at the time of release (because it opened the same week as E.T.), but later grew to cult classic status and I think is now widely hailed by critics as well. I'm sure I've seen it more than 10 times and will surely watch it again.

Who among us plays an instrument with the most modest of skills?
Shawn replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I did learn things like chord charts and tablature, I just couldn't fathom standard notation. I stopped looking at tab over 10 years ago, I just put the record on and figure it out that way. -

Shawn replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm a self-taught guitarist, play everything by ear and never learned a lick of music theory (I tried on several occasions and failed horribly). I've been playing for over 20 years but I reached a certain level and never really made the next leap. It's cool, I enjoy it as a hobby, I may not be the most technically proficient player, but what I do play feels honest. That's the key as far as I'm concerned. -
There used to be a freeware app called DVD Decrypter, might still be available from a bit torrent site somewhere. I stopped trying to get audio from DVDs, it's just too cumbersome of a process.
