  1. Isn't there a novel where Dortmunder reads a Richard Stark novel and tries to imitate Parker?
  2. Or Mosaic will do a set of the uncollected Duke on Columbia. (I hope.)
  3. I managed to make a "complete at the Royal Festival Hall" by combining the RCA release with the Mole Records Lp. In the liner notes to the latter they give the running order of the concert and I managed to digitize the two Lps and put the numbers in the correct order.
  4. Want to sell your cd version? I think this is about the rarest Duke right now-- lots of singles which have (IIRC) never been on cd elsewhere.
  5. Not to be trusted for historical accuracy but great fun.
  6. Now that's good advice.
  7. Almost exactly the same for me. BTW There is a new Criterion Blu Ray of American Friend.

    CD length

IIRC either My Funny Valentine or Four and More was nearly half and hour per side.
  9. No one has commented on the quality of this set yet. Let me be the first: I'm really enjoying it; think it's great.
  10. There was a good British saxophonist, Lol Coxhill, who busked in the streets of London a lot. I remember seeing him once playing soprano and being quite impressed. That was before I read about him. Joshua Bell once played outside a metro stop in Washington but that was for an experiment to see if anyone noticed how good he was. I don't think he needed the money.
  11. I was interviewing Frank Zappa once when he was backstage with The Mothers and BS&T so began talking with the BS&T guys. They knew nothing about Satie, just thought it was a cool piece of music.
  12. So I guess if there's no booklet there's no discussion of how Wes turns Ruby My Dear into Laura. Are they the same chord structure?
  13. How about every recording of Gymnopedie No 1 played at once? http://disquiet.com/2016/01/15/brendan-landis-satie-gymnopedie-hey-exit/
  14. I saw Lloyd with Frisell and it was like a Bill Frisell concert with CharlesLloyd as guest-- which was fine with me, I like them both.
  15. I'm not sure you will ever need a 4 K unless you have a huge screen. But I've been wrong about this sort of thing before- I wasn't sure of the need for a Blu Ray until I A/B'd it with a DVD.
  16. Thanks. IF it's been on Lp in Europe maybe it will show up on cd download over here.
  17. I've read that Prez played in an all star group with Pee Wee Russell and Jack Teagarden at Newport in 1958. Does any know if this was recorded and if it is available officially or otherwise? Ok I did some on-line research and discovered that the following is at the Library of Congress? Buck Clayton, trumpet; Jack Teagarden, trombone; Lester Young, tenor saxophone; Pee Wee Russell, clarinet; Don Ewell, piano; Tom Bryant, bass; Jo Jones, drums. So it was recorded. Is it available?
  18. They'd say I didn't know anything about opera and I'd say who gives a fuck, I know what I like.
  19. Well opera often gets great reviews and many of my friends love opera but I don't like it . But I also don't feel a need to tell them they're wrong.
  20. Am I the only old white man who thinks it's not my job to tell young Black people what they should be playing or listening to?
  21. I think a lot of this discussion can be summed up as "Hey you kids stop playing on my lawn." And I've never even heard The Epic, so I'm completely objective.
  22. How does he compare to Aldo Ciccolini? (Who 50 years ago was Satie's greatest champion.) BTW If you like Satie, I just discovered that Rene Claire's "Entr'acte" with music by Satie is on Youtube. For many years I could only find it without music and even attempted to sync it up with a record myself.
  23. The pictured cd includes only the first half of the concert. (As I unfortunately found out after I bought it.) This one contains the whole concert and though I think the first half is the best half it's all good.
  24. A couple of years ago Terry Zwigoff told me that Amoeba was offering to digitize his entire 78 collection and put it on line. At the time I wondered why but I just discovered that they sell digital downloads from 78s (not sure that these are from Terry's collection). I presume that the ones they sell are all pd, but who knows. They offer 3 different formats at different prices for those who want higher fidelity. I don 't know how to search them except by title or artist so I don't know how many they offer but if you're in the market for some rare old recording..... (BTW I discovered this when I Googled The Harlem Strut.)
