    Frank Zappa

I don't really know but I think you need permission.

    Frank Zappa

I think (I'm far from sure) that you can play whatever you like but you can't use Frank Zappa's name in advertising (nor the Beatles for another example) without getting permission. This gets weird with Dweezle of course. HE can probably use his own name but not Frank's without permission. BTW I still have a 3 inch cd (remember those?) of Peaches en Regalia.
  3. No idea. I'd never heard of him at the time and don 't know what he was doing there. IIRC John Gilmore was with him.
  4. Summer of 1961. I'd just moved to Montreal. Coincidentally everyone I did see is in the middle of your list: Ellington-Diz.
  5. Ditto on all 3. And Red Garland. Also never saw Coleman Hawkins-- maybe my biggest regret-- or Chet Baker. Can't think of anyone else important. (I'm not counting anyone who died before 1961 since I only started seeing live jazz then. ) Think the first important jazz musician I saw live was Sun Ra. He had a quintet, it was August and he played The Christmas Song.
  6. She sat in with the Gil Evans Project last month at The Jazz Standard.
  7. And that's rentals which means it would have done $4,000,000 at the box office.
  8. IIRC on Treme there were hints about this with Mayfield playing himself.
  9. Now there's two names you hardly ever see together.
  10. PM me your e-mail address and I'l try to do it. Will probably be easier to photograph it.
  11. IIRC Hines' quartet with Budd Johnson on tenor was touring in the summer of 1965.
  12. This is worth watching; tells you a lot about Ali.
  13. You convinced me. I jut ordered. It's $28 from Amazon, but $12 plus shipping from a US 3rd party. Much as I like instant gratification I think I'll wait a few extra days to have it delivered and save $14.
  14. I'm curious: What's on the "Side Tracks" compilation?
  15. Vol 20 took about 4 months to show up on Amazon.
  16. Last night I saw Stevie Wonder at a rock festival. At one point he was vamping on that tiny electronic keyboard he uses and eventually began singing The Boxtops' (Alex Chilton) "The Letter." The band didn't seem to know the song but soon caught on to the chords and the saxophone player came in with a Hank Crawford solo for a couple of choruses (not really choruses since nobody, including Stevie, seemed to know the song has a bridge). Stevie picked up his harmonica and joined the sax in a duet before starting a solo of his own. Maybe it was because I just read this post but it did sound a bit like David Sanborn to me.
  17. For me too. Shit, it will probably arrive the same day as the Mosaic Prez.
  18. And the personnel on the record: An all star cast when it was released.
  19. According to Facebook it's our fearless leader's birthday but I don't see any notice of it here. Could FB be wrong? Did I just miss all the posts? Was it yesterday? Is it tomorrow? IN any case and whenever it is: Happy B'day Jim!
  20. David Sanborn "Sanborn performed with blues musicians Albert King and Little Milton at the age of 14.[4] He continued playing blues when he joined Paul Butterfield's band in 1967.[5] Although Sanborn is most associated with smooth jazz, he explored the edges of free jazz in his youth, studying with saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Julius Hemphill. In 1993, he revisited this genre when he appeared on Tim Berne's Diminutive Mysteries, dedicated to Hemphill. Sanborn's album Another Hand also featured leading avant garde musicians." And he played with Gil Evans. Anyone good enough for Gil is good enough for me. (Or do you think Gil is a square white guy with a funny hat too?)
  21. I agree. Most of the sessions in this collection are great.
  22. In NY for a Duke Ellington project but went two nights in a row to see Gil Evans Project at The Jazz Standard. Glad I did.
  23. IIRC I saw her with the San Francisco Jazz Collective and only took note that she was a really good pianist who was rather attractive. Sorry to hear about all her troubles. Glad I bought some downloads from her site.
