There's still some duplication and I think some of it has been available from different sources. Did you find anything by the BG sextet with Christian?
-
There's also a jam session with Fats Waller and Pee Wee Russell.
-
Well I'm not that familiar with Goodman but he was pretty good in the jam session.

I spent a couple of hours at the NJMH yesterday and ran into Loren who reiterated that he thought there'd be some releases soon. I spent most of the time listening to the collection. Biggest treat was a jam session with Lester Young, Benny Goodman, Roy Eldridge, Teddy Wilson and Jo Jones. I hadn't realized that the collection wasn't of entire shows but rather of separate song selections that Savory chose to keep. There seem to be only a few entire programs. But from what I heard I'd say he had very good taste. BTW of the 1100 or so items, 400 are by Benny Goodman. But there's lots of Basie, Fats Waller and even Louis Jordan. Sound quality varies from item to item.

Favorite Ellington / Strayhorn tributes (single artist)
medjuck replied to HutchFan's topic in Recommendations
I quite like it and it has one song (On the Wrong Side of the Railway Track) I'd never heard anywhere else. -
She also did a session with Gil Evans, so worked with both Gil and Bill.
-
They did a great 2 Lp compilation called "Black California" (included Art Pepper!). Don't think it ever came out on cd.

Charlie Parker Unheard Bird: The Unissued Takes 2016 Verve
medjuck replied to l p's topic in New Releases
Digital versions are often more expensive than the the hard copies if there's a sale price on the atoms (vs bites). True of books sometimes too. On the other hand, digital versions of music albums often allow you to buy (some) cuts separately. -
Where can I get this?

Ellington Mosaic (Brunswick) box ERROR (now corrected)
medjuck replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
He was devoting his life to it. I was hoping a consortium of several people could take it over and volunteered to help but got no takers. It was a big job. I've also tried to create some interest in putting the new DESOR on line and updating it via crowd sourcing to no avail. (In honesty I haven't tried that hard in either case-- just suggested it to a few people.) -

Unfortunately DEMS (Duke Ellington Music Society) ceased operation with the death of the great Sjef Hoefsmith. -
Count Basie -- "Complete Live At The Crescendo 1958"
medjuck replied to duaneiac's topic in New Releases
I notice that a couple of reviews on Amazon mention that discs 4 & 5 contain material from earlier performances and are not from The Crescendo. I can't tell when they're from but they certainly seem to be from a larger venue. (I'm not referring here to the tv show that is also included. Speaking of which I've been told that that Bobby Troupe tv show once featured Chet Baker playing Bix but that show is no longer extant. Arghhh.) -
Well it seems fixed.

Quote function seems to be just ot working for me this morning. Maybe taking off July 4th.

I believe (and I could certainly be wrong) that if you want to advertise a concert of Richard Rogers music you need his estate's permission. Even if your name is Fred Rogers. Or especially if it's Roy Rogers. Well I expect it's equally true for Roy Rogers. Maybe that's why we see so few Sons of The Pioneers cover bands.
-
I think he's ok. A friend of mine in Seattle has become friendly with him and sees him fairly often.

Jazz in crosswords
medjuck replied to medjuck's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
A down. -
In Sunday's LA Time's crossword 6 down is "Monk associate". I joke to myself that maybe it's Charlie Rouse but then try to think of who works at a monastery besides monks. After a few letter are filled in the answer is "Coltrane".
-
I don't really know but I think you need permission.
-
I think (I'm far from sure) that you can play whatever you like but you can't use Frank Zappa's name in advertising (nor the Beatles for another example) without getting permission. This gets weird with Dweezle of course. HE can probably use his own name but not Frank's without permission. BTW I still have a 3 inch cd (remember those?) of Peaches en Regalia.

Who did you miss when they were alive
medjuck replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
No idea. I'd never heard of him at the time and don 't know what he was doing there. IIRC John Gilmore was with him. -

Summer of 1961. I'd just moved to Montreal. Coincidentally everyone I did see is in the middle of your list: Ellington-Diz. -

Ditto on all 3. And Red Garland. Also never saw Coleman Hawkins-- maybe my biggest regret-- or Chet Baker. Can't think of anyone else important. (I'm not counting anyone who died before 1961 since I only started seeing live jazz then. ) Think the first important jazz musician I saw live was Sun Ra. He had a quintet, it was August and he played The Christmas Song. -
She sat in with the Gil Evans Project last month at The Jazz Standard.
