I'm just reading Brian Priestley's bio of Mingus where he says how important Taylor was for Mingus when Mingus first arrived in New York. I saw him perform once with Herbie Mann as his guest soloist. Good concert.

Hey Allen will that history of Rock and Roll ever be published? One question: If they had no commercial considerations what kind of music would Pops and Elvis have made? IN Elvis's case there's reason to believe that it would be gospel. But Pops? I think you're right in suggesting that he didn't really care as long as he could reach an audience.IIRC even the Hot Fives seem to have been suggested by someone else and they never performed live. Who knows he might have preferred playing with Guy Lombardo.

I don't think I even saw 10 Jazz concerts this year but amongst the ones I found memorable (literally-- i.e. I remember them) were Ornette Coleman at UCSB Sonny Rollins also at UCSB and Bill Frissell/Paul Motian at The Village Vanguard. (The week when two other guys--playing together-- subbed for Joe Lovano.) Ooops. I forgot local boy Charles Lloyd at The Lobero.

Gotta say I didn't like this that much. Greil Marcus claims that the great cover is a one minute version by Elvis on the '70s box set (one of many Elvis recordings I don't have). Marcus may be a Dylan fanatic but he's very disparaging of the later sing along versions by Dylan or The Band and especially the one on The Last Waltz.

Joel Dorn included "River Stay Away from My Door" from this Lp on a compilation he did called IIRC "Songs that Lit Up the Switchboard"-- the concept being that when he was a DJ there were certain songs that always got a strong positive reaction from his listeners. It was hearing this cut that made me by the cd.

I remember learning of Trane's death and spending the evening listening to A Love Supreme.

Am I the only one here old enough to have seen Elvis on the Dorsey Bros show? The first time I saw him I thought he was a joke. After the 2nd time I went out and bought his first Lp followed by Eps of Fats Domino and Little Richard. By the time he came back from the Army I thought I was too cool for Elvis (Miles was my man). A decade or so later I saw That's the Way It is and it made me re-evaluate him. The director's seem to be trying to make fun of Elvis and his fans. Doesn't matter, he kills.

Wet! Sitting by fire listening to new Ellington Mosaic box thankful that (so far) there are no leaks.

Great series. There were a couple of good films based on it. One American (The Laughing Policeman) and one Swedish (Man on the Roof-- based on The Abominable Man). I'm almost through it. I keep reading reviews that say how great that it's more about music then sex and drugs. Sure there's some stuff about music but not nearly as much as there is about sex and drugs.

That's great. Reminded me at times of Laurie Anderson. I think it's hard to find because Viacom won't let YouTube use anything from Cpmedy Central or any of their other networks.

They are open from 10 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. Call and make an appointment. They'll fit you in to a one or two hour time slot. #628 has landed in perfect condition in Santa Barbara. (In this case maybe we can brag about who has the number closest to 1,000 as wel as who has the lowest number.)

The date is disputed. One reason I believe is that Jimmy Woode was with Ellington in 1955. Losin makes a pretty good argument: Although the tunes performed (especially "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid," "Ray's Idea," and "Wee Dot") might suggest an earlier date, the customary date for this set is pretty close to correct. Davis was booked as a single at the Hi-Hat Club for two consecutive weeks in February 1955, joined by Boston locals Migliori, Walcott, Woode, and Zitano. According to Down Beat, a Davis engagement advertised in Detroit for February 11-13 had to be canceled "because of a prior commitment in Boston... Davis was held over at the Hi-Hat for an extra week to share the stand with an R & B group called The Chords" (DB March 23, 1955). My guess is that the Hi-Hat engagement began in early February. (Thanks to Chris DeVito for help with this date.) "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid," performed here at a very slow tempo, is clearly a set-closer, and the music may be from more than one night. I'm slightly acquainted with Jimmy Woode's daughter and if I see her around I'll ask her( though I doubt that she has any knowledge of her father's whereabouts in February 1955).
