I saw Herrmann speak at the BFI in London. Someone from the audience asked how he could have co-operated with RKO when the hacked up The Magnificent Ambersons. His answer was one of the saddest things I've ever heard, given his and Orson Welles' subsequent history. He said " We thought it was just a movie. We thought we were going to make lots of them."

Is the 40 cd set really what it claims? Does it have the numbers missing from The Okeh Ellington?

You can construct your own alternate of "I Loves you Porgy" that's longer than the first if you use the alternate solo. It was done for release as a single but for some reason Schapp didn't include all of it. I guess he thought we already had the head on the official release.

Yes it was, mine cost £5.68 Unfortunately the Mosaic is going to cost an awful lot more, when you add in $45 shipping and potential customs charges. Yes, the 4cd set may have been the bargain of our lifetime.

Nat Hentoff's "At the Jazz Band Ball". Haphazard collection of writings for periodicals. Not very well edited-- some anecdotes are told several times-- but it probably shouldn't be read straight through which is the way I read it. Nevertheless very worthwhile and full of his love for the music and even more so the musicians.

Anybody know whether that version of "Ebony Rhapsody" is exclusive to that set? The Ebony Rhapsody material in this box seems to be an "exclusive". I have never encountered it elsewhere. These Ebony Rhapsody recordings were recorded (but not used) for the movie "Murder At The Vaneties". Though I'm very happy having them on CD I never understood what they are doing on a "Best Of CD" set. For more information see DEMS bulletin 03/2 and 03/3 Thanks. Does this mean the cuts found on the 4cd set are the "promo" recordings? (I'd better ask Sjef. )

He has a song called "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You" on one of the Katrina relief compilations ("Sing Me Back Home"-- a great cd btw) that is the happiest cut you'll ever hear. I never think of him as a jazz musician but what I've heard I like. Who care's if it's jazz.

The 4 cd "Best of Duke Ellington" does seem to have 2 cuts that are not on the Mosaic set: the 2 part Ebony Rhapsody rehearsal that was recorded for RCA. I think it's not the same as the version in the centennial RCA box. The 4cd set also contains Daybreak express which is on various Victor cds but not the Mosaic set. Otherwise I think everything on the 4cd set is in the Mosaic box.

I remember there being a Miler RCA '45 box set.

A few months ago Steven Lasker told me that he had turned in remasters of Fletcher Henderson sides to Mosaic. (Or maybe he said Lunceford and I heard Henderson.)

After Avid went Windows Apple developed it's own editing program, Final Cut Pro, which many editors now use. Apple ran a very clever ad in the Hollywood trade papers announcing "$100,000 worth of editing equipment 95% off." Though I don't know if it really is that much cheaper than an Avid system if you buy all the top of the line equipment. We've never edited a feature film using Final Cut yet but lots of people do, especially young people.

I remember two box sets from Columbia in the early '60s which between them contained all the '30s Billie Holiday master takes Columbia owned.

I have a vague memory of seeing him play solo at A Space in Toronto sometimes in the '70s.
