You're in luck Ted, being in Canada. I got the two cuts I mentioned on a Naxos cd. Their Ellington releases are very good (though they don't claim to be complete) but I don't think they're available in the US.

I've got a couple of cuts from the "Hit of the Week" label. Is this label included in your 47 missing tracks or are you just including those owned by Sony?

It ended up costing a little less than $30 including shipping which isn't too bad for a 2 cd set. It did take a couple of weeks to arrive.

I watched part of the film "The Cotton Club" the other day and noticed the top rather sexy program illustration used as wall painting in that film. It is now on the Storyville web site (www.storyvillerecords.com/Default.aspx) No track listing so far but it includes a 1933 newsreel item on Lenox Avenue and has a glimpse of Duke. Remco Well I caved and ordered it from the UK. Got it last week. It's pretty great. Thank goodness it arrived before I heard that the Mosaic box was delayed again or I'd be really depressed. Is there anyway to order it besides phoning them? Also it doesn't give a price. Or did I miss it? The scanners at LAX may not have been opened yet. I flew out last week from Terminal 2 and I just went through the usual machine and didn't even see the scanners. (Though maybe they're just not in all terminals.)

You ain't kidding. A teacher played this to the class when my son was in elementary school. (He's now graduated from college.) I could only find it on a weird grey market French release which of course gave no discographical info. (Not to be confused with Dexter Gordon's equally great song titled "Cheesecake".)

I have that for travel between US and Canada. But it's just for customs and immigration, not security.

I saw the original (panned by critics) production of Pacific Overtures and was knocked out. But then saw A Little Night Music and was bored shitless. Who wrote lyrics for One Touch of Venus? Ogden Nash? SJ Pearlman? Saw a concert production. Sondheim's never written anything that clever. Or as good as "there is a crack in everything -- that's where the light gets in". Though this is not original with Leonard Cohen. Where do he and Warren Zevon fit in here?

I find that one so rarely hears unamplified music anymore that what I hear live is not necessarily what I want.

There was a 1998 cd release produced by Bob Beldon for which I presume they found the original tapes because it has 3 alternate takes. Also the "PACIFC JAZZ" cd Deep in a Dream, has two a cappella vocals that were done at these sessions which makes me presume they've found the original tapes. The Columbia release is CK65562.

I met him when I was working on Merlin. (I was "associate producer" but didn't do much work once the show moved from workshops in LA to the theater in NY.) He was an amazing guy. IIRC he did a lot of work on operas.

BTW Supposedly this restored version has a new recording of the score by Gottfried Huppertz which was composed for the original release of the film. It's pretty good.
