  1. Happy b'day young man! And many more.
  2. I'm not into this type of music but I hung out with Ronnie Dio one afternoon about 30 years ago. He was doing a song for an animated film we made. Seemed like a nice guy.
  3. Slowing down a bit and starting to buy almost as many downloads as cds.
  4. Happy B'day and many more!
  5. That's one I don't have. Anyone know if it's available? Given the two examples we have from the period maybe it should be called "Little Dutch Boy" or something like that.
  6. Lost seems to me to more and more to owe a lot to Myst.
  7. Thanks. Always enjoy it here but have to fly back tonight.
  8. I just got back from my sons graduation from NYU. (Yankee Stadium in the rain). They gave an honorary degree to Wayne Shorter who'd earned a real one in '56.
  9. Just listening to the David Quintet wItH Coltrane in Holland April 9, 1960 and noticed that during his solo on Walkin', Miles plays the little ditty that eventually became Jean Pierre. That's 20 years before he recorded Jean Pierre. Anyone haves any other early sightings of it?
  10. Hey do you have that mike in front of you because you're singing back-up?
  11. I was going to start a thread about how I've been hearing pretty good jazz in the lobbies of hotels in both Canada and the US. Has mainstream jazz literally become elevator music? (That's not "mainstream" in the old sense of being contrasted to bop. In fact I've heard a lot of bop in hotel public spaces recently.)
  12. Happy B'day and many more!!
  13. Yes, that's an amazing, disturbing story. Wasn't there an incident much later in his life when he told somebody, half-jokingly, that the scar was his "stigmata"? Now reading: What do you think of the Ellington book? Is it worth adding to my book shelf full of Ellingtonia.
  14. What instrument is the non-guitarist playing on the Rpyal Palm Special (cd 3)? A harmonica and then a comb and paper or kazoo? And who's the first stovepipe to whom you refer? So many of these cuts are great and most are new to me.
  15. I saw the Yardbirds in the summer of 1965 at the Marquee Club. I thought they were going to be a jazz group. (I'd seen several jazz groups at the club previously.) At the time I was more iompressed by all the pretty girls in attendance than the group.
  16. And many more!!!!!
  17. Since I've got my laptop on my lap as I'm listening it's easy to ask questions and make comments. Hope you don't mind. Disc 2: Who's the pianist on Barrelhouse Blues? And you suggest (correctly I suspect) that Gershwin had heard some James P.Johson. Do you think Zez Confrey did too or do you think he heard Gershwin?
  18. Just got home to find it waiting for me. Love that priority mail service! At first I wasn't sure about a cd Rom instead of a booklet but I dragged the contents to my desktop and love that I can enlarge the type. Also like that you've done a track by track commentary. (I did sometimes find it difficult to to find your comments on certain tracks of Devlin'.) Can't wait to sit in my Eames chair, put up my feet with my laptop on my lap and start listening and reading.
  19. He sings "It Takes Two to Tango" on the Verve set (maybe on a single cd too for all I know.)
  20. Happy B'day to the king! Long may you reign.
  21. Chuck: This information may be readily available but I can't find it: What cds does Nessa Records have in print and for sale from you? Is there a list somewhere?
  22. Wow, I hope this is true. A really good friend of mine has just been diagnosed with cancer.
  23. I was impressed that in the first show I think they never once set a scene in the Quarter.
  24. I'm thinking Versailles. (Which Michael Weiss already suggested and it's once of my favorites.) Venice at Motor.
  25. Dumb question; is tomorrow Thursday or Friday? I'm in LA working and have some free time especially in the evening and today (Thursday) at lunch. And I have wheels. Maybe free tomorrow afternoon too.
