  1. Happy B'day and many more of them!!!
  2. How close were you to the loud guy in the audience whose screaming almost drowns out the band? I always wondered if this guy was the reason Elvis has has stayed away from live recordings for so long. Where we were sitting we didn't notice him. The band was really loud. My wife has worn ear plugs to concerts ever since.
  3. I first saw Elvis at a club in Edinburough in the summer of '76. Never heard of him before but ended up dancing on the tables. Went back to Toronto and told all my students about him. They laughed. A year later he was playing the biggest hall in town. Then got to see him at the El Mocombo (the concert that's in the Ryko box-- which btw leaves out Nick Lowe sitting in and singing "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass"). By the time I moved to L.A, I had to go to the Greek to see him. Sort of lost interest until The River in Reverse but then I'm a big Alan Toussaint fan (even if I've probably spelled his name wrong).
  4. Did Edgar and Johnny ever perform together?
  5. The Shadow of the Wind. Anyone else read it?
  6. I've never been divorced but from what I've heard from friends it's tough even if you're the one who wanted it! So be prepared for some tough times but keep in mind that this too will pass. I don't really have any advice but it sure sounds like you should get out of Kansas. Best of luck and hang in there.
  7. And for all that great dance music at the El Mocambo when you were with Junior Wells.
  8. Well, please tell Mr. Hurt in FN French he just lost another FN fan. Uhh, why? Because he's "Fluent in French, Hurt maintains a home outside Paris."?
  9. That's the one on iTunes. The other Amazon link "Japanese import version: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008K75...8&s=music" seems to contain three of tracks with just haawkins.
  10. Just looked for a copy of a pm I'd sent last week and saw that there's nothing in my "Sent" folder that's less than year old. Is there some setting or preference I've screwed up?
  11. The cd in the Amazon link seems to be a diffferent one than the cd in question. However 3 of the cuts from it are on the iTunes download though Eldridge and Hodges do not play on them. What's the song list on the Hawkins! Eldridge!.... cd. It's not given on AMG.
  12. Excuse my ignorance but what is the JC Forum?
  13. Teenage kids do complain and they rarely tell their parents if they think they ( the parents) made a right decision about something as important as moving. So I would discount that a bit. However if they are not doing as well in school as they did before and truly seem depressed (not just talking about how "depressed" they are) you should probably take some steps. BTW You haven't made it clear (or I haven't understood) whether they say they want to move back to Arizona. Or have they just said they hate NY?
  14. You're right: the tracks with Trane appear on the recent Concord release. But Miles Tones also has 3 cuts with Sonny Rollins from 1957 and a 1953 version of I Got Rhythm most of which is devoted to scatting by Joe Carroll.
  15. Abdullah Ibrahim's African Herbs?
  16. I think Sackville returned the tapes to Roscoe 'cause they could not remove the tape print through for cd release. Probably never see a "silvering" of this record. ← Does that mean the tapes are not usable? What are the prospects of making a master from a mint vinyl copy, can that be done with satisfactory results? Just curious, Kevin Hey I was at that recording sesssion!
  17. The iTunes Music Store has added 2 Coltrane items: Live in Paris, and Live at the Half-Note. Apparently the first one is taken from a Charley release of '61, '63 and '65 concerts. The 2nd was was actualy recorded at both Birdland and the Half Note. They're 5 cuts and 4 cuts respectively and only $3.99 each (!) so I'll probably get them but does anyone know anything about them? They've also added a Miles Davis release called Miles Tones that contains lives recordings from the 50's. I would preseume that all of thtese are bootlegs so I'm surprised to find them on the iTunes store.
  18. These aren't all "live performances" are they?
  19. So called Duo/discs (dual/discs?- I forget how it's spelled) like the last release of Kind of Blue often have the entire cd in 5.1 digital.
  20. I remember the day I heard he died (probably the day after his death) going home and listening to A Love Supreme. It was a complete shock. I hadn't known he was ill.
  21. Mark Cantor has a very good print of it.
  22. My guess is they've used 78s from private collections that were in excellent condition.
  23. me too! Ditto. Before I read these last 2 posts I was about to write one asking "Am I the only one who's happy about this release?" I thnk we're being unjustly harsh with the new owners of Fantasy. They've repackaged a few things quite well. I just wish they'd do more: eg Shelly Mann at the Blackhawk and the 12/24/54 Miles with Monk session.
