  1. A jazzamatazzy birthday to you!!!
  2. To add to the confusion: I think a 16 year old guy who has sex with his 16 year old girl-friend can be convicted asa sex offender.
  3. His productin company is "Face Productions". He was given the name Face by Willie the Lion.
  4. Good idea: I just gave this to myself.
  5. Jamal is a good example of how fashions change: in the early 60's no-one who wanted to be hip admitted to liking him. People thought Miles was joking about him. it was almost the equivilent of saying you like Kenny G. today.
  6. Never heard the cds but saw them live at the Hollywood Bowl and Torme was still in great voice during this period.
  7. My late father once told me that the harbour in Sidney Nova Scotia used to freeze over in the winter but it hasn't in years. People used to drive across it to save time. He also said that you knew it was spring in Cape Breton the first time a car went through the ice.
  8. Who owns the Dot catalogue?
  9. I just got a copy of the new English translation of Vian's "Manual of Saint-Germain-Des-Pres. Didn't think it was very good but it's a beautiful edition-- I presume a copy of the original . BTW Do you know when the original was published? This edition never makes that clear. Bought it for the pictues of my old stomping grounds.
  10. "After the dissolution of the original Jazz Messengers," Who were the original Messengers? These all sound good to me. I guess by ordering a lot of them at once we can claim to be saving money on shipping.
  11. Happy B-Day!! And many more.
  12. I ran into the late Zal Yanofsky on Yonge Street in Toronto sometimes in the 70's and he dragged me off to see this guy he said was a great guitar player who was doing a demo in a music store. Lenny Brau of course!
  13. Sounds like a great evening. Make sure it's a very early dinner. The drive to downtown from Hollywood cam be a bitch.
  14. I used to see him a lot in Montreal in the early 60's. I think he must havea been living there then. I was present when they did a live recording that I used to own on vinyl but have never been able to find on cd: "Live at La Tete de l'Art". (sp?) I remember one night when Mingus sat in on piano.
  15. The Duke Ellington Story on Records (DESOR) reports 7 other instances of Duke performing Carolina Shout between '65 and '73, all but one unissued. It looks like it was a regular part of his repertoire at that time. Of course he might also have performed it earlier but by the mid 60's nearly every EKE performance was recorded by soneone so we have a better record from that time on.
  16. The actress Natascha McElhone has a son she calls Theo which she says is short for Thelonious as in Monk.

    Miles Davis question

Miles's records releases in the latter part of the 50's had an amazing impact, amongst other things establishing what became-- for better or for worse-- the standard jazz repertoire and intoducing an all star cast of players to a wider audience. I've been trying to find out exactly when the Lps were released but can't get good data on the Prestiges. As s far as I can figure out: In 1957 the first 12 inch release of Birth of the Cool (and I think the first time it was called that) along with 'Round Midnight and Cookin'. In '58 Miles Ahead, Relaxin', Milestones, Something Else, LeGrande Jazz and Workin' In '59 Porgy and Bess, Kind Of Blue and Jazztrack. That's some release schedule.
  18. But unlike Ray they didn't use the real singer's voice. Phoenix was ok but I wanted to hear Johnny Cash. I also think they made the songs sound a bit less C&W than the originals.
  19. The band also recorded a number called "The Boppers". I'll dig it up and give it a listen again. That was originally called "Floogie boo" and, according to the sleeve notes, was written by Cootie and Cleanhead. It was recorded on 4 Jan 1944, some weeks before Coleman Hawkins made the first Bebop record. (Ahem!) MG The cd on which I have it (Jazz Archives) claims that it was written by Cootie alone and that it's the same as "You Talk a Little Trash"-- which it is, just speeded up. However the cd notes also make the dubious claim that the alto solo may be by Bird, so who knows how much they can be trusted. BTW I'd say that Ken Kersey who plays on Epistrophy also brings some Bop to the band. I hadn't noticed that - I'll play them both later. The sleeve of my edition (Phoenix LP1) just gives Williams as the writer of Trash but both him and Vinson for the same song faster. Funny.... ? MG Just listened to them both. I don't think they're the same tune. They're both blues. There are some similar figures in them. That's it, far's I cnsi. MG It's taken me a while to get back to this but I've just played them again and on the cd I have Trash and Bopper are virtually the same but at different tempos. I wonder if the songs are labeled differently on the 2 records. Yours says that Epistrophy and Floogie Boo are the same?
  20. Are you sure? That would mean that anything recorded before 1936 was now pd. BTW Most book contracts state that if the book is not in print the rights revert to the author.
  21. I worked with a Chris on a film once. Liked him. Jeez the number of peopled I've worked with who are now dead is getting distressingly high.
  22. There are 3 NPR stations that claim to cover Santa Barbara. They're all really located elsewhere and none of them get great reception here. 1)KCRW Santa Monica. Creates most of its own music shows. Famous for "hand-picked music". 2) KCLU Thousand Oakas and Santa Barbara. Used to be jazz and NPR. Now is mainly talk with jazz most evenings. Lame djs. Could use your show. 3)KCBX San Louis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Good jazz shows in the morning and weekends. They do carry Marian McPartland so take some syndicated shows.
  23. This feature is very good. In fact the whole extra disc is full of good stuff. (hhmmm I guess I'm not that articulate on Sunday morning. )
  24. Wow. I was going to give some boring advice but you sound way too overloaded. Reminds me of that sequece in Goodfellas where the coked out mafia guy is running around setting up a deal and trying to avoid the cops in helicopters but meanwhile he has to keep returning home to stir the meatballs or whatever he's cooking. Sounds like you have way to many responsiblities. You should prioritize them and drop those on the bottom of the list. I'd put your new job and the school work on the top.
  25. Me too, though it's only happened a couple of times it's still too many. I used to have a copy of the self published first edition of Roddy Doyle's The Commitments till I loaned it to someone. I lend cds sometimes but usually make a back up first.
